This course will involve an overview and update on the subject of primary cutaneous lymphomas. Four interna-tionally renowned experts in the field will address different subsets of the global topic. In each category important clinical and pathological aspects of individual diseases will be outlined. Moreover, the optimal investigative approach to diagnosis will be emphasized, the distinction between primary cutaneous lymphomas and cutaneous involve-ment by systemic lymphomas will be addressed, the best treatment options for patients will be considered and new developments will be revealed. In accordance with the title of the course, ‘diagnostic pitfalls’ will be a special fo-cus of discussion. Situations which predispose to errors in diagnosis including (i) poor clinicopathologic correlation, (ii) inappropriate or insufficient investigation, (iii) undue reliance on equivocal tests and (iv) suboptimal knowledge and/or experience in the area will be examined. The aim is to alert registrants to problematic aspects of this field and to equip them to competently handle the cases that they encounter in practice.

With advanced therapies available to the very ill, analy-sis of skin biopsies generated on the inpatient wards has become an ever-demanding activity. This session will examine a series of often encountered themes in the histopathologic diagnosis of cutaneous conditions in hospitalized patients. The emphasis will be on providing a practical session designed to aid dermatopathologists in daily signout, especially those in a hospital-based set-ting. However, the themes are broad and generalizable to the outpatient setting as well. Common clinical patterns and their differential diagnoses will be discussed to lay a foundation. An update to our knowledge of graft versus disease and a practical approach to its diagnosis will be offered, with respect to distinguishing it from other enti-ties in the differential diagnosis. Both a review of known dermatopathologic entities and a discussion of new ones will then be provided, concentrating on infection, vasculi-tis, and drug reactions.

“Toward Precision Dermatopathology”

Medicine is evolving from the intui-tive art practiced by highly special-ized practitioners to a new phase that has been termed Precision Medicine. Diagnoses in Precision Medicine are made based on a firm understanding of the underlying pathogenetic mechanism, a prereq-uisite for predictable therapeutic results and outcomes, as well as an optimal risk-benefit ratio of thera-peutic interventions. Pathology as

well as dermatopathology will have to embrace and adapt these concepts and relevant technologies in order to maintain its key role in guiding clinicians.

Course Director: Noreen M.G. Walsh, MD, FRCP(c), FRCPathDalhousie University, Halifax

3.25 hours CME credit

The design of this course is influenced by the fact that, apart from dedicated subspecialists, most dermatolo-gists, pathologists and dermatopathologists have limited exposure to childhood skin disease. Moreover, some enti-ties encountered in this patient population are rare, but nonetheless of vital importance. To address the challenges inherent in this setting, six dermatopathologists with expertise in different aspects of pediatric dermatopathol-ogy will condense their knowledge and together convey a practical overview of the topic. A spectrum of inflam-matory and neoplastic skin diseases in children will be addressed, with an emphasis on clinical and pathological clues to accurate diagnosis and optimal management. The discussion will range from uncommon manifestations of common diseases to rare and exotic entities. The goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of an area of derma-tology and dermatopathology where practitioners may lack experience of the full spectrum of disease.

Return to where it all began….

The President’s Reception and Banquet will be held in the historic Red Lacquer Room at the Palmer House Hilton where history was made for our society nearly 50 years ago. The Red Lacquer Room was the location of the very first meeting of The American Society of Dermatopa-thology in 1962. It seems fitting that we should return to where it all began so many years ago!

“A selected group of dermatologists and pathologists actively interested in the teaching of dermatopathology were invited to the initial organizational meeting and founding of the society.” – Preamble, The American Society of Dermatopathol-ogy Constitution and Bylaws, 1962

The story of the downtown Chicago’s Palmer House Hilton is one of romance and charm. Potter Palmer bought his socialite and philanthropist bride Bertha a grand Chicago hotel for his wedding gift. Tragically just thirteen days after its grand

opening, the Palmer House fell victim to the Great Chica-go Fire. Determined to rebuild, Potter secured a $1.7 mil-lion loan and on November 8, 1873, the new Palmer House opened its doors. This marked the opening of what would become the nations’ oldest continually operating hotel. Bedecked with famed murals likened to the Sistine Chapel and sculptures for Louis Comfort Tiffany, the history of the celebrated Palmer house continues to impress even the most discriminating traveler.
