ur two district coordinators have been

working hard to plan quarterly events that

nvolve bringing all the schools together to

ive back to our community. This past

ummer, there was a successful park

    Ethics:

Chair - Matthew Sandretti UCLA 13

    ([email protected])

Ethics is a large component of dentistry,

and the Ethics Chair strives to not only help

keep the district abreast of all the current

state of ethics at the state and national

levels but also relay this information to the

district ASDA membership. Some of ourgoals this year are to:

    1. Start SPEC chapters at every California

    school

    2. CA Ethics Day have a day of

    awareness where each school will

bring in speakers to discuss new

topics and have workshops on how to

handle the hurdles we face in

    dentistry

    3. Making the ASDA White Paper on

    Ethics and Professionalism in Dental

    Education more accessible thru

    Ethics Corner in our quarterlynewsletter.

    District Communication:

    The Bonding Agent Newsletter:

Editor - Teresa Tran UCLA 13

The quarterly district newsletter is an

essential communication tool that helps to

keep chapters aware of all the activities

going on as well as prep them for what is

to come next. All chapter members arestrongly encouraged to submit articles for

this publication. Look out for the first

    distribution on October 16, 2010!

Most importantly, we are your resource for

or those of you unfamiliar with ASDA, let me quickly explain.

he American Student Dental Association (ASDA) was created in

971 to unify the voice of the American Dental Student and

ncrease student advocacy. Since then, ASDA has grown to a

early 18,000 member global organization with the mission to

dvocate for dental students as well as their patients. Within

SDA, there are 11 districts. The six dental schools in California

    ogether form District 11.

ur district has made tremendous changes over the past year to

etter represent our members. We have opened many new

eadership positions at the district level. In addition, we havereated a district cabinet that facilitates increased collaboration

etween the six dental schools. The main role of the district

abinet is to serve as a resource to the local ASDA chapters of

alifornia. All of the chapters in our district are well respected

ationally and receive numerous accolades at our regional and

    ational meetings.

peaking of meetings, I would like to invite all of you to

ur District 11 Meeting in San Francisco that will

    ake place between October 15-17th.

We will have numerous speakers and workshops to introduce you

to organized dentistry and the hot topics facing California

Dentistry. If you have any questions, please contact myself or

your local chapter president. No matter what level of

involvement you choose to undertake with ASDA, please be

involved in some aspect. Attend a lunch and learn, volunteer for

a community outreach event, or participate in the voter

registration drive. Our organization is strong because of our

active membership and I am sure this academic year will be no

different. Once again, welcome to District 11 and please let me

    know if you need anything.

We have recently experienced an exciting period of growth for

our district. Last year, we welcomed Western University as the

sixth member chapter in California. We held our first ever district

meeting, and published the first edition of this newsletter. I am

extremely excited to see that since Dan Hammer has taken over

the position of District 11 trustee that he has done so much more

to advance the collaboration among our chapters, creating

ASDAs first district cabinet, organizing frequent conference calls,

and planning new and exciting district events.

These collaborative endeavors are important for our organization

and its membersthey allow us to network and learn from each

other, create valuable leadership opportunities and expose a

greater number of students to ASDA and the ADA. All of these

benefits are central to ASDAs mission statement of introducing

students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry.

Perhaps the most significant and encouraging benefit of ASDA

leadership in my view is the enormous representation that

students are given in other areas of organized dentistry. Students

are represented in each of the ADAs councils, commissions, and

committees including full voting privileges in CODAwhich is

charged with accrediting dental schools and postgraduate

programsand the JCNDE, which administers the national board

exams. This October, I will be serving as one of 11 delegates to

the ADA House of Delegates; ASDA is given five votes in the ADA

House, which has 460 total members. It is remarkable that as

students we have more than 1% of the total vote in the ADA,

especially when one considers that it often takes dentists many

years of commitment to organized dentistry before they are

    elected ADA delegates.

As students, we must take advantage of the incredible power wehave to shape our profession. I encourage all ASDA members to

take part in leadership or at the very least attend a national or

district meeting. For those of you who have already committed

yourselves to ASDA leadership, I hope you will continue to serve

organized dentistry throughout your careers. Only through your

hard work and dedication can we expect dentistry to remain such

a strong profession for years to come.
