The Winner Within byPatRiley

Not only is Pat Riley one of pro basketball’s winningest coaches, but his speeches before hundreds of corporations, from ARCO to AT&T to Toyota, have earned him the title of “America’s Greatest Motivational Speaker.” The Winner Within is his formula for success. It is a book about winning, leadership, mastery, change, and personal growth, based on understanding and controlling the shifting dynamics of a team - any team, whether it is a small company or a giant corporation, a family, a city, or a group of athletes. How does a struggling team form a covenant to work together instead of separately? How does a successful team battle compla-cency? How does any team overcome the thunderbolts that strike out of the blue? Drawing upon the great teachers and his own experiences in and out of sports, interweaving them with dozens of parallels and stories from business and society, Riley shows how to ride the cycles of team change, balance role players and stars, build solid foundations, break through self-imposed barriers, create change within continuity, and nurture cooperation within competition. “All of my contacts and experiences have proved to me, over and over again, that the complex inner rhythms of teamwork - flows of ambition, power, cooperation, and emotion - are the keys to making dreams come true,” says Riley, and in The Winner Within, he provides the tools, insights, and plan of action to help master those rhythms. It is a book of universal power and scope - a new classic of the literature.$20/ $24

In his swimming days Michael Bohl was one of Australia’s premier medley swimmers representing Australia on a number of occasions during the 1980’s.

Coach Bohl’s experience as a swimmer has undoubtedly assisted in the splendid coaching he is displaying with Stephanie Rice in both the 200 and 400 individual medley events. Great technique in all four strokes is a feature of Stephanie’s medley swimming, catapulting her to the top of the world in the female individual medley rankings.

When we talk of backstroke in Australia Coach Greg Salter immediately comes to mind. Coach Salter’s expertise and knowledge on coaching backstroke is second to none, this is supported by the series of Australian champions and international medallists (both male and female) he has produced over the past 15 years from his sea-side base at Kingscliffe in northern New South Wales. Two of Coach Salter’s current stars Sophie Edington and Tay Zimmer demonstrate the efficient, relaxed yet powerful backstroke technique which is characteristic of the style of backstroke developed by Greg. The consistency demonstrated by Coach Salter in producing internationally competitive backstrokers is testimony to his proficiency in coaching this stroke.

Stephan Widmer’s technical knowledge and scientific approach to coaching has been responsible for producing one of Australia’s most successful female sprinters. Libby Lenton represented Australia as a relay swimmer and 50 metre freestyler in her first major team at the 2003 world championships. Her rapid development now places her firmly at the top of the world in female sprinting in 2007. Libby’s freestyle technique has been astutely developed by Coach Widmer through a careful combination of efficiency and power, the result is sustained speed - a quality which is a feature of her racing and largely responsible for her success.

Ken Wood is undoubtedly Australia’s most experienced coach as demonstrated by producing a continuum of champions over a period of 45 years. Coach Wood’s most recent duo Geoff Huegill and Jessicah Schipper have demonstrated his most significant achievements. The signature characteristics of Coach Wood’s butterfly technique is the flat body position and low, arm recovery action resulting in a unique efficiency which has powered these two outstanding butter-flyers to international stardom and a string of world records.
