It takes many of them away from their families for the week so their extra work is appreciated. Following our earlier survey offamilies regarding our school camping program, please note that the 2014 camping program, for the first time at AVPS, will include a Canberra tour for Year 5 and 6 students. Year 3 and 4 students will attend a different adven- ture camp facility in Victoria in 2014. Please continue to ring the office as soon as possible with any information about students making late starts, taking extended holidays or family moving to other areas in 2014 so that I can continue my planning. A Message from the Assistant Principal

Ascot Vale PS has signed up for VicHealth’s Walk to

School 2013, a month-long activity that encourages

children to walk to and from school every day in

November.

Walk to School encourages children to make walking part

of their daily routine to improve fitness, friendships, the

environment and their confidence.

Mark this Date in your diary – Wednesday 20th

November. On this day, we are encouraging families that

live to far from our school to walk, to park their car and

meet at Rothwell Park (opposite Ascot Vale railway

station, between Rothwell St and The Crescent). Moonee

Valley Council will have a cof fee cart at this location with

free tea, cof fee and hot chocolate from 8am. Join me for a

cof fee and we’ll walk to school together.

Children can keep track of their walks, with the help of a

parent or teacher, using the Walk to School website and

app. Children can play an interactive game on the app and

earn items for an imaginary Walk to School journey with

each walk they complete. The app is available for free

from the App Store and Google Play.

Walk to School is free, it’s fun and there are fantastic

prizes for families and schools up for grabs. An informa-

tion sheet and consent form will be sent home shortly, or

you can register your child at-

www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au.

The week gone by was a quiet one for us, with

so many of our children gone away on camp.

The children that remained however had a good

time too, judging by the noise theycreated.

Anyway the Campers are back and OSHC is

back in full swing.

There has been some very good news for us

from the sports commission and the Active

After School Communities grant has been

approved for 2014 which means that there will

be many varied activities happening in OSHC

next year too. Starting from next week

community coach Pauline Poloai will conduct a

Soft ball session every Monday and Sam

Dermoudy from the Western Bulldogs Football

Club will coach Athletics every Wednesday

afternoon. I do hope the children will enjoy

theses sessions and will make thebest use of

these opportunities.

Last week there were many changes to the

program owing to weather and we were

confined to indoor games, soccer, movies and

pop corn. This week we hope to go throughthe

program without interruption. We will also

continue to do the craft items we are planning

for the fete.

Take care and enjoy the rest of the week.

Jaslyn & Stephanie from U4 are providing the writing samples

this week.

The “best” writing comes from personal experience, the camp

that our students attended last week at Phillip Island has

provided many opportunities for writing.

These two examples are snapshot writing, short, sharp

recollections of one particular aspect of Camp. Jaslyn has

written her snapshot from a dif ferent perspective, Stephanie has

written from her own point of view.

Both girls have managed to capture with clarity the feelings

and events they wished to convey, both fine examples of

clarity of voice.

Great work from both girls.

“A DATE WITH FETE” – SATURDAY 23RD NOVEMBER 2pm-7pm

FETE CAKES AND PRESERVES STALL

Don’t let your jam be the preserve of your family cookbook! The Fete is a great opportunity to share your “world’s best jam or preserve” with the wider Community. In the lead up to Xmas it is always good to have a jar of chutney on hand as a gift. Preserving may not be your thing but you (or your neighbours) may have bountiful fruit trees/veggies that you are happy to share. You may also like to contribute by donating any clean glass jars and leaving them in the school canteen ASAP for others to fill with delicious, home-made goodness. It would be great if you could touch base with me or Demi (mum of Luca Unit 1 and Julius Unit 2) to let us know if and how you are able to help out. Contact: Alison McRoberts (Dylan Pleban’s mum Unit 1) Email: [email protected]

DONATIONS - SEEKING BLOCKS OF CHOCOLATE

Our Fete features a fun activity involving chocolate – LOTS OF CHOCOLATE….. YUM! We are seeking donations from school families of a family sized block of chocolate to operate this activity. We need single large family sized blocks (200-220gm depending on manufacturer), not variety packs or small blocks.

Can you include a block of chocolate in your shopping basket this week and resisting the temptation to eat it, deliver it to Unit 3 for collection? Any brand or flavour of chocolate will be gratefully accepted. Cadbury, Nestle, Whittakers, Lindt – you decide! Please leave your donations for collection in Unit 3.
