Term 1 and we are already in Week 7, time is passing very quickly and our

school has been a hive of activity with learning and opportunities offered to

our students.

So far this term we had a very successful swimming carnival and it was

exciting to witness so many of our students competing on the day, and

many of our older students helping in the pool with our less accomplished

swimmers. Many thanks to our staff who set the carnival and it was lovely

to see parents at the pool supporting all of our students.

We inducted our 2019 school leaders in Week 5 and they will be running

assemblies for the remainder of the year and also chairing the combined

SRC meetings. Many students have elected to be part of these school

teams and they play an important role in deciding the direction of activities students wish to hold

throughout our school year. Students have contributed in a positive manner and some unique

ideas have been presented to the executive for approval. Thank you to Ms Fallon and Ms Jones

for their continued support of these elected students.

Our school Liaison Police Officers came for a visit to both Primary and Secondary school classes,

they spoke about cyber bullying, walking to school safely, stranger danger and the repercussions

of inappropriate use of Facebook and online sites. These officers will be attending our school

every term and we welcome them to continue to form positive relationships with our students.

It was lovely to meet parents at our ‘Meet and Greet Barbecue’, these evenings are important in

our school as we get the chance to interact with our parents in a positive, casual environment with

their children and discuss many issues that are of a concern to our parent body. Thank you to the

teaching staff for making themselves available and of course-cooking the barbecue for all of us.

Schools are extremely busy places and I encourage parents to ring and make an appointment if

they wish to see myself or one of the teaching staff, this ensures that we are available and that

you do not come into school and myself or one of the teachers is absent or unattainable at that

point in time.

The end of term is coming upon us quickly and there are many activities happening in the coming

weeks, please check your children’s

bags for notes; Facebook and

Skoolbag for further information

about school activities.

Take care, enjoy the last remaining

warm days before winter sets in, and

enjoy the next few weeks of the term.

POLICE TALK

Our Primary students had a visit from the Police last week. They came to have a chat with students about road safety, bike safety and stranger danger.

The Police Officer spoke passionately about bullying within schools and the hope of all Police Officers to see this eliminated from our schools. They discussed the right of every child to be able to feel safe in their surroundings.

The students were all very engaged in the discussion and listened attentively to what the Police Officer had to say.

LITERACY

Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 have impressed in their Literacy these past few weeks. Our

new Kindergarten students are loving to learn to read and write through the L3 (Language,

Learning and Literacy) program. Students are excited to come and read to Miss Fallon in the

engine room. They also enjoy creating writing pieces during guided writing.

NUMERACY

Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 have had a fantastic start to the year. We love using concrete

materials to learn in a hands-on and engaging way.

Recently we have been using unfix cubes as an informal unit of measurement to measure the

length of ourselves and other objects around the classroom. Students begin by estimating the

length before measuring the actual length with the cubes.

AFL COACHING SESSIONS

Batlow Technology School has been lucky enough to have two AFL development coaching from the GWS Riverina department come out to the school to run sessions with our Years 7 to 10 students. These sessions have taken place during their PDHPE lessons and are helping the students to understand the fundamental skills of AFL. This has been made available with the secured funding through the sporting schools program. By Mr Ethan Kass, Relieving PDHPE Teacher

SECONDARY BOY’S OPENS BASKETBALL KNOCKOUT GALA DAY

On Wednesday 6 March 2019, a team of eight boys travelled to Bolton Park in Wagga Wagga to

participate in the Riverina Secondary Boy’s Opens Basketball Knockout Gala Day. With a youthful

and inexperienced team, the boys gave their all in every game and improved significantly

throughout the day.

We started our campaign with a tough match against an experienced, fast and intense Tumut

School side. Unfortunately, they proved too strong and came away with a convincing victory. Our

second match was against a strong and tall Mt Austin school team, this contest was much closer

than our first with the boys taking the early lead and maintaining it into the early stages of the

second half. However, our opponents proved to be too experienced and possessed too much

height and we eventually went down in a close loss.

With two losses in our pool matches, this relegated us to the fifth versus sixth playoff with Temora

High School. With the boys high on confidence after a very competitive game against Mt Austin,

we jumped out to an early lead. The boys played exceptionally well and despite a late fight back

never really looked troubled against Temora, coming away with a great win to finish off the day.

A special mention should be made to the Year 8 students who, despite being almost five years

younger than some of our opponents, gave an enormous effort on the day.

APRIL 6/7 COUNTRY GOLF PROGRAM “Learn when young & play till ancient”

Growing up in the country was the best. Experiencing a variety of sports in a

competitive environment with easy access to facilities proved the catalyst for

producing many great Aussie champions. Golf was not the most “cool” of sports

however it became very “cool” when the game exposed this country boy to a

world of travel and influential people.
