AbstractsOver 120 abstracts have been submitted which will be presented as:

• ASCIA 2019 posters (displayed from Wednesday 4 to Friday 6 September 2019).

• ASCIA 2019 clinical grand rounds oral presentations (by advanced trainees).

• ASCIA 2019 clinical research oral presentations.

Accepted abstracts are published in the Internal Medicine Journal (online) and these can be accessed on the ASCIA website by the end of September 2019: www.allergy.org.au/conferences/ascia-annual-conference/published-abstracts-ascia

Abstracts were also received for the CFAR Symposium short oral “hot publication” presentations, for food allergy research that has been recently published, or accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. These will be presented as part of the CFAR Symposium on Tuesday 3 September 2019.

Professor Mark Boguniewicz, is a professor in the Division of Allergy-Immunology, Department of Pediatrics, at National Jewish Health and University of Colorado School of Medicine. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Michigan and fellowship in allergy-immunology and rheumatology at Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He is board certified in pediatrics and allergy-immunology.

Professor Boguniewicz is a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), past Chair of the Dermatologic and Ocular Diseases Interest Section and past Chair of the Eczema Committee. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI). He is on the editorial board of Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice. He served on the Joint Taskforce on Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors of the AAAAI and ACAAI and was co-chair of the treatment section of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology/AAAAI/PRACTALL Consensus Group for atopic dermatitis. He has served on the Joint Task Force of the AAAAI/ACAAI for the 2004 and 2012 Practice Parameter for Atopic Dermatitis. He co-chaired the Expert Panel on Management of Moderate-to-Severe Atopic Dermatitis and chaired the Atopic Dermatitis Yardstick project.

Professor Boguniewicz’s research focuses on immunopathogenesis and new treatments for atopic dermatitis. He is an investigator of the NIH Atopic Dermatitis Research Network. He has lectured at many national and international meetings and has over 350 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, chapters and abstracts published. He is the recipient of several Pediatric Allergy-Immunology Fellows Outstanding Teacher Award, the 2002 Faculty Clinician of the Year Award, the 2006 AAAAI’s Richard S. Farr Memorial Lectureship, and has been selected for Best Doctors in America. He is also the recipient of the 2013 AAAAI Distinguished Clinician Award.

Professor Mariana Castells MD PhDBrigham and Women’s HospitalBoston Massachusetts USA

Professor Castells is a clinician, researcher and teacher at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute, USA. She is the Director of the Drug Hypersensitivity and Drug Desensitization Center, as well as the Director of the Mastocytosis Center, and has served as the Allergy and Immunology Training Program Director for 20 years.

Professor Castells served on the Board of Directors of The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), and is now the research chair director of the AAAAI Foundation. She is on the Board of Directors for the ABAI, and the Board of Directors for the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI) and the JACI In Practice. She is on the council of the International College of Allergy (CIA) and has directed the International Drug Desensitization Meeting (DDIM) in Barcelona, Spain, yearly.

Professor Castells has spearheaded the evaluation and understanding of drug anaphylaxis and hypersensitivity, and provided desensitization protocols which are used as standards around the world, treating thousands of patients with cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases, maintaining these patients on their first line therapy.

Her research has uncovered mast cell inhibitory mechanisms which are pertinent to desensitization. She has been involved in the new diagnostic criteria for mast cell activation disorders and mastocytosis and heads clinical trials created at the Mastocytosis Center.

Professor Timothy Craig MD DOPenn State UniversityAllergy Asthma and ImmunologyHershey, Pennsylvania USA

Professor Timothy Craig is a professor of medicine and pediatrics at Penn State University. He trained in the US Navy after which he started his academic career at the University of Iowa and then transferred to Penn State to start an Allergy and Immunology Program. He is the director of the Alpha-1-Deficiency Center at Penn State University.

Professor Craig is a distinguished educator, program director, section chief and a Fellow of the AAAAI, ACP, ACAAI and ACOI. He is the recipient of multiple teaching awards, has published over 250 manuscripts and has delivered over 350 invited lectures.

Professor Evan Dellon MDGastroenterologist University of North Carolina, USA

Evan Dellon is a Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He joined the University of North Carolina (UNC) faculty and the Center for Esophageal Diseases and Swallowing (CEDAS) in 2008, where his main clinical focus is on disorders of swallowing, in particular eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). He became Director of CEDAS in 2014, and is an Associate Editor for Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Professor Dellon’s main research interest is in the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), and the eosinophilic GI diseases (EGIDs). He is widely published in this area, and collaborates with investigators all over the world. Dr. Dellon has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterologic Association, the CURED Foundation (campaign urging research for eosinophilic disease), UNC, and a number of industry partners to study EoE and other EGIDs.

The goal of Professor Dellon’s research is to improve the lives of patients with EoE and EGIDs by learning how to better diagnose, treat, and monitor the condition. He is widely published in this area, and collaborates with investigators all over the world.

Professor Philippe Eigenmann is a pediatrician and allergist trained in Switzerland, and in the USA (Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore). He is currently head of Pediatric Allergy at the University Hospitals of Geneva Switzerland. His main focus of research is food allergy with several ongoing studies focusing on early-life events of allergy, as well as on food allergy diagnosis.

Professor Eigenmann has published over 200 articles in international scientific journals. Since January 2018, he is editor-in-Chief of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, the world leading journal in the field, and in the Editorial Board of Allergy. In addition to his scientific activity, he has been the chair of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) section on Pediatrics, and president of the Swiss Society for Allergy and Immunology. He is also secretary of the EAACI-Clemens von Pirquet Foundation, a European foundation promoting research and education in pediatric allergy and immunology.

Dr Garcez graduated from Aberdeen University in 1997 and completed postgraduate general professional training in Cardiff (adult medicine) and higher specialist training in Bristol (immunology and general internal medicine).

Dr Garcez was appointed to Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) as consultant immunologist in July 2011. He leads the clinical and laboratory immunology service in MFT, he is the elected Chair of the UK Primary Immunodeficiency Network (UKPIN) and holds a seat on the immunology and allergy Clinical Reference Group (CRG – NHS England).

Dr Garcez is a member of the medical advisory panel for PID UK and represented the Fatal Anaphylaxis Register on the Royal College of Anaesthetists National Audit Project 6 Steering Panel.

Associate Professor Matthew Greenhawt earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts. Subsequently, he completed a pediatrics residency at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, New York, and an allergy and clinical immunology fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also holds an MBA from Tufts University and a master’s of science degree in health and healthcare policy from the University of Michigan, Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

He is an Associate Professor with the Department of Pediatrics, Section of Allergy and Immunology at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He serves as the director for the Children’s Hospital Colorado Food Challenge and Research Unit.

Associate Professor Matthew Greenhawt is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and American Board of Allergy and Immunology. Professor Peter Hellings MDProfessor of Rhinology, The University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Medicine

In addition to his clinical work Professor Hellings is a researcher at the Clinical Immunology Laboratory. He is a member of the Flemish Agency for Care and Health, and has served as the Belgian representative in the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery. He is also the coordinator of the Excellence in Rhinoplasty course at KU Leuven since 2008.

Professor Peter Hellings conducts research into the mechanisms of chronic upper respiratory tract conditions, with a particular focus on allergic rhinitis and the non-allergic form that causes similar symptoms of stuffy nose and sneezing. A further area of interest is chronic rhinosinusitis, an inflammation of the mucous membrane in the nasal passage and sinuses, and in functional and aesthetic nasal problems.

Professor Hellings research spans the entire spectrum from animal research to in vitro and clinical studies. He has received various research grants and international awards for his scientific work. Hellings has also authored many articles in leading scientific journals including Nature, Lancet, Allergy, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Journal of Clinical Investigation and Journal of Immunology.

Professor Hugh A Sampson MDIcahn School of Medicine at Mount SinaiNew York, USA

Professor Sampson is the Kurt Hirschhorn Professor of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York and has nearly 35 years experience in translational research focusing on food allergic disorders and basic immunologic mechanisms responsible for these disorders.

Professor Sampson’s research has been funded continuously by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including the Principal Investigator for the Consortium for Food Allergy Research.

Professor Sampson has published over 500 articles, 88 book chapters and co-edited seven books, primarily on clinical and immunopathogenic aspects of food allergic disorders. He was elected to membership in the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academies in 2003 for his research accomplishments.

Professor Sampson is the past-president of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (AAAAI), and served on the Board of the World Allergy Organization (WAO). He has trained over 40 post-doctoral allergy/

immunology fellows, many of whom are now leaders in the field of food allergy. Professor Sampson has also served on the Editorial Board of five allergy journals, and is an Associate Editor of Pediatric Allergy & Immunology.

In November 2015, Professor Sampson stepped-down as Dean for Translational Biomedical Sciences at Mount Sinai to devote 40% of his time to DBV Technologies as their Chief Scientific Officer.

Assistant Professor Carina Venter PhDUniversity of Colorado Children’s Hospital, Colorado USA

Dr Venter is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Section of Allergy and Immunology at the Children’s Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, where she is conducting research and working with children and adults with a range of food allergies.

Assistant Professor Venter is a past chair of the International Network of Dietitians and Nutritionists in Allergy (INDANA), and a member of the American Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (AAAAI), American College of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (ACAAI), European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI). She was also a member of the NICE (UK) food allergy guidelines.

Assistant Professor Venter has had numerous publications in international journals, and has authored book chapters and edited a book on Food Hypersensitivity.

Assistant Professor Venter moved from the UK in 2015 where she had been performing research into food allergies and allergy prevention as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth and at the David Hide Centre on the Isle of Wight.

One of the highlights of Assistant Professor Venter’s career has been her appointment to the Expert Panel of the National Institutes for Allergy and Infectious Diseases Peanut Allergy Prevention Guidelines, making her the only dietitian that has had presentation on official US and European food allergy guidelines.

A/Prof Loh has more than 30 years of experience as a clinical immunology and allergy specialist.

He completed his medical degree from the University of Queensland in 1981 and has been a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) since 1988. From 1989 to 1993 A/Prof Loh was a Fellow in Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, and Medical Officer at the Harvard Medical School. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) and American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).

For 25 years A/Prof Loh made a significant difference to allergy and clinical immunology in Australasia, as head of the Immunology department at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. He transitioned this into a leading clinical immunology and allergy centre at the Perth Children’s Hospital. A/Prof Loh encouraged allergy and immunology research in the hospital and has been involved in numerous studies.

A/Prof Loh joined ASCIA in 1994 and was President of ASCIA from 2012 to 2014. He was Chair of the ASCIA Anaphylaxis committee (2009-2012), co-Chair of the National Allergy Strategy (2016-2019) and co-founder of AIFA, the Allergy and Immunology Foundation of Australasia, formed in 2013. He has been an organising committee member for ASCIA Annual Scientific Meetings (2001, 2007) and Annual Conferences (2013, 2019) held in Perth, Western Australia. As Chair of the ASCIA Anaphylaxis committee, A/Prof Loh initiated the development of the world leading ASCIA anaphylaxis etraining courses, that were first launched in March 2010.

During his ASCIA Presidency, A/Prof Loh contributed through advocacy and vision, to the development of the first National Allergy Strategy for Australia, which he has co-chaired since it was initiated. This has enabled ASCIA and Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia (A&AA), to gain government funding for important initiatives, that would not be feasible without this support.

ACTAIR® Initiation Treatment Sublingual Tablets 100 IR & 300 IR, mixture of American (D. farinae) and European (D. pteronyssinus) house dust mite allergen extracts. ACTAIR® Continuation Treatment Sublingual Tablets 300 IR, mixture of American (D. farinae) and European (D. pteronyssinus) house dust mite allergen extracts. Excipients include lactose monohydrate. INDICATIONS Treatment of house dust mite allergic rhinitis with or without conjunctivitis in adults and adolescents over 12 years diagnosed with house dust mite allergy. ORALAIR® Initiation Treatment Sublingual Tablets 100 IR & 300 IR, Allergen pollen extract of 5 grasses. ORALAIR® Continuation Treatment Sublingual Tablets 300 IR, allergen pollen extract of 5 grasses. Grass pollen allergen extract from: Rye grass, Timothy, Cocksfoot, Sweet vernal grass, and Meadow grass. Excipients include lactose monohydrate. INDICATIONS Treatment of grass pollen allergic rhinitis with or without conjunctivitis in adults, adolescents and children (above the age of 5) with clinically relevant symptoms, confirmed by a positive cutaneous test and/or a positive titre of the specific IgE to the grass pollen. CONTRAINDICATIONS Hypersensitivity to any of the excipients; severe, uncontrolled or unstable asthma; immune deficiency diseases or active forms of auto-immune disorder; malignant diseases; oral inflammations. PRECAUTIONS Oral surgery; co-medications that may alter the effects of adrenalin (tricyclic antidepressants, mono amine oxidase inhibitors or beta-adrenergic blockers); rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption; history of eosinophilic esophagitis. For all precautions, refer to full PI. ADVERSE EFFECTS Oedema mouth, oral pruritus, ear pruritus, stomatitis, abdominal pain, tongue oedema, lip oedema, oral discomfort, diarrhoea, nausea, paraesthesia oral, dyspepsia, throat irritation, oropharyngeal discomfort, cough, pharyngeal oedema, dyspnoea, nasopharyngitis, gastroenteritis, bronchitis, acute tonsillitis, headache, dermatitis atopic, headache, ear pain, glossitis, oral mucosal blistering, hypoaesthesia oral, gastritis, cheilitis, dry throat, conjunctivitis, pruritus, urticaria [also for ORALAIR®: rhinitis, lacrimation increased, asthma, rhinitis allergic (nasal congestion, sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal discomfort) sinus congestion, dysphonia, dry throat, oropharyngeal blistering, tongue pruritus, vomiting]. Patients should be informed of signs and symptoms associated with severe allergic reactions, which occur rarely, and seek immediate medical care if they occur. For all adverse effects, refer to full PI. DOSE & ADMINISTRATION First tablet should be taken under medical supervision and the patient monitored for 30 minutes. Tablet must be placed under the tongue until complete disintegration (at least 2 minutes) and then swallowed. Day 1: one 100 IR tablet. Day 2: two 100 IR tablets (placed under tongue simultaneously).
