Review Bridge Drawings: Construction drawings from 1968, 2006, and 2009 werereviewedtoidentifysuspect asbestos‐containingmaterials(ACM)andotherregulatedmaterialsatthebridge.AsbestosSummary: Twenty(20)homogeneousmaterialswere identifiedat thebridgethatweresuspect for containing asbestos. Two of the twentymaterialswere found to be ACM. A samplelocationmapisprovidedinAppendixII.ThefollowingmaterialswereidentifiedasACM:
The asbestos‐containing, black tar sealant is located on the light pole bases outside of thebarrierwalls.Thematerialisnon‐friableandingoodcondition.
The asbestos‐containing,blackadhesiveon theblackvinylpads is locatedon the lightpolebasesoutsideofthebarrierwallsonthebridgedeck.Thematerialisnon‐friableandingoodcondition.
ThefollowinglocationswereinspectedforACM:
Thebridgedeck,roadwearsurfaces,piers,guardrails,slopes,abutments,wingwalls,utilitiesandsuperstructure.
Noconstructionjointswereidentifiedintheabutmentatthesouthsideofthebridge.Handexcavationwascompletedatconstructionjointsbetweentheabutmentandthewingwallsandno3‐plyjointwaterproofingorotherwaterproofingmaterialswereidentified.
Electrical utility conduit and junction boxes were identified at the south abutment andunderthe bridgedeck.DrawingreviewidentifiedBakelite®fittingsinthemetalexpansioncouplers of the electrical conduit systems at the bridge. The Bakelite® fittingswere notsampledatthisbridge,however,representativesamplesofBakelitefittings,fibrouspackingsandrigidgasketswerecollectedfromexpansioncouplersatmultiplebridgesattheCanofWorms complexandnoneof the sampleswere found to containasbestos. Inspection ofother electrical components identified no coatings or insulation suspect for containingasbestos.
Castirondrainpipeforstormwaterdischargewasobservedunderthebridge. Inspection
of the stormwaterpipe identifiednocoatingsorinsulationsuspectforcontainingasbestos.
Therewere noutilities forwater, gas,communications,orotherservicesobservedonorbelowthebridge.

Samples collected from painted structural steel surfaces at the bridge did not
identifyleadbasedpaint,however,the1968bridgeplansidentifiedashopcoatofredleadpaint/primeronallstructuralsteelbridgecomponents.Theredleadpaint/primer is assumed to be present on top of beam flanges, under fill andspliceplates,atI‐beamwebsandflangesandabovebearingassemblies.
