Arielle Sokol working with Peggy Pearlstein and Claire DekleI worked both in the African and Middle Eastern Division

(AMED) and at the Conservation Lab. I focused on two

separate projects, the Berman Haggadah Collection and the

At AMED, I created

spreadsheets, assessed content

and condition, made photocopies

on Acid-free paper, and housed

and shelved materials.

In the conservation lab, I used the cutter to

correctly size labels. I also used PVA to

attach labels to housings. I learned what it

was like to work in a real conservation lab

using state of the art equipment.

Overall, this was a great experience because it allowed me

to accomplish a variety of tasks, using skills from several

• Usability Report on digitalpreservation.gov - Addressing the needs of different kinds of users, casual vs. professional users.

• Use of Social Networking for NDIIPP – How NDIIPP can use social networking, like Facebook, to engage the broader community.

•Testing of Recollection tool – NDIIPP’s new tool that takes simple excel sheets and creates more visual interesting data, which can be linked to other users’ data through a social networking aspect.

The mission of the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program is to develop a national strategy to collect, preserve and make available significant digitalcontent, especially information that is created in digital form only, for current and future generations.

Revealing The Hidden Gems

ALA, Chicago

Guide: Sheila Joy / Louise Gruenberg

As part of my Alternative Spring Break Program I completed a Project for the HRDR department of ALA. The project was called 'Revealing the Hidden Gems' and job functions included converting the existing pdf's on the website into accessible webpages.

For this purpose I initially learnt and got accustomed to their Content management system, Collage, and redesigned the webpage from the emerging leaders link. I removed the pdf's that contained almost 60% of the information and embedded them as searchable webpages by converting the pdf's to xml first.

For the purpose of usability, I added interactive channels such as Pods to search for Information and latest postings. The task also required me to add user friendly navigation links and accessibility tags through collage.

The complete process was documented and submitted to the organization as part of training material for future interns.

Technologies learnt - used : Collage (CMS), Adobe Acrobat Pro, XML.

NMNH, Washington DC

Student: Divye Bokdia

There are over 30, 000 maps in various research Departments of the National Museum of Natural History dating from the 1830s to the present.

A project has been underway to organize the maps, create images of them and enter data about them into a database. This project, 'World of Maps', was going to be made public by May, 2010.

So a web interface was required that would meet the template requirements of the Smithsonian UI patterns. Along with the interface, it was important to optimize the database entries and reduce the search query time considerably.

Assisted NSF Historian with processing of archives, including drafts of Congressional testimony, letters from all manner of interested parties, internal communications, and other behind-the-scenes program materials.

Learned a lot about the process and purpose of archives, not to mention about the legislative process, research funding, biotechnology, and the logistics of getting in and out of the polar regions. (Did you know there's a Lonely Planet guide to Antarctica?)

Attended a meeting of the Office of Integrative Activities, talked about the Large Hadron Collider with staff of the Office of Legislative and Public Affairs, and discussed the Antarctic bibliographic project with the staff of the Office of Polar Programs.

What was wrong?

Lots of digital files placed insecurely on a networked drive before the department's development of a digital repository.

What did I do?

Completed a survey of these materials to see what they were and whether they were available in other formats.

Besides this, I had meetings with people in the preservation department and the Digital Studio to talk about digital preservation workflow. I also helped convert video to a digital format.

Digital Preservation Support Program

TOOLS: •Photoshop – UI design•Adobe Flex – Data visualization•ArcGIS Flex API – cartography map application

OUTCOMES: •Produced design mockup•Implemented Flex UI

ORGANIZATION: A Manhattan based new agency startup focusing on socioeconomic study and report based on data analysis

Organized and converted the excel tables of General Assembly resolutions into webpage. Designed and developed the template style sheet for the document research site’s consistency improvement.

In-depth Tour in UN building

The project is to visualize the Stimulus

data online. The data include the

amount of money for each state and

each county and where departments or

organizations they are from. We used

Adobe Flex and arcGIS web API to
