Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you:

• Must be able to describe (AO1) the animal studies.

• Should be able to evaluate (AO2) the use of animals in psychological research.

Page 4: AS Week 17 Animal Studies and Brain Scans

List as many differences between humans and animals you can think of. Consider behaviours,

thought patterns, life styles etc …

Task Design a set of ethical guidelines for working with animals.

What should we consider?

Hint, think about:

Duration, environment, species, suffering, extent of experimentation.

Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act (1986)

• Procedures: procedures used during research should not cause pain and discomfort to animals, and they should avoid causing death to any animals where possible.

• Choice of Species: animals used for research purposes should be chosen to ensure that the species being studied is likely to suffer as little as possible.

• Number of Animals: psychologists must use the smallest number of animals possible in their research so that the effects are kept to a minimum.

• Housing and animal care: when using animals, psychologists must be sure to keep them in settings as similar to their natural habitat as possible. If they live in groups, they must be caged in groups. If they normally live in wide, open spaces, they should be caged the same way.

Human or Animal Participants?• Describe and evaluate (including both practical and ethical

strengths and weaknesses) the use of animals in laboratory studies when researching into schizophrenia.

Brain Scans | Getting Inside

Name as many different brain scanning techniques as you can think of.

Why are brain scanning techniques useful in psychology?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), formerly referred to as magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), is a method used to visualize the inside of living organisms as well as to detect the amount of bound water in geological structures. It is primarily used to demonstrate pathological or other physiological alterations of living tissues and is a commonly used form of medical imaging.

Page 17: AS Week 17 Animal Studies and Brain Scans

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear medicine medical imaging technique which produces a three dimensional image or map of functional processes in the body.

Review Task | Scans (MRI & PET)

• What does it measure?• How does it measure it?• Functional or Structural? What does this

mean? • Invasive or Non-invasive? What does this

mean?

• How does it work? • What kind of data does it produce? • What can they show us? • How do they apply to the biological approach

and helping us explain behaviour?

Using the images you have, your notes and iDevices design a poster, mind map or sheet that has the above issues addressed.

20 minutes

Consolidate Task| Exam Questions

The Biological Approach uses PET scanning techniques. Below is a picture of a PET scan.

(a) Describe the PET scanning technique. (4)

(b) Another method used in the Biological Approach is animal experiments. With regard to practical issues, outline one strength of the use of animals in experiments in the Biological Approach. (3)(c) Name one method other than PET scanning and animal experiments that is used in the Biological Approach. (1)
