Congratulations!

To my church family,Thank you doesn’t even begin to express my feelings for the response of First Presbyterian Church following Dustin’s death. And “thanks” can’t express my deep appreciation for the influ-ence of all of you on Dustin’s life growing up. It does take a village and the First Presbyterian Church village had a big influence on Dustin becoming the wonderful and beautiful person that he was.

Thank you, Glen Stovall

Summer Reflections

(with Tom)

Take a break from the heat...

Gender and the BibleSunday, July 11 @ 11:30 amThe Media, government and other institutions use the terms “sex” and “gender” interchangeably. But for sociologists they are two separate issues. What are the differences? What are the issues and rules that surround gender? Given these issues, can it help or change how we interpret the sto-ries of the Bible? In this class we will have a lively discus-sion about the issues of sex and gender and look at scripture for the surprising results.

Food and the BibleSunday, July 18 @ 11:30 amEveryday 26,000 people die of hunger related diseases. Most of those people are under the age of 5 years old; yet the average American family throws away about 1/3 of what they buy each month. World-wide about one billion people are hungry and about one billion people are over-fed. Food is political, yet Jesus referred to himself as ‘the Bread of Life’. Do Christians have a responsibility for this very real problem? If so what are we to do? In this class we will look at the issues and look at what God has called us to do. Finally, we will put on our creative hats and “Rethink Eden”.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

FPC’s Vision Continues to GrowOn Sunday, May 23, a congregational meeting was held to hear the report of the Nominating Committee and confirm nominees to the Pastor Nominating Committee. Jim Allen, Mollie Carter, Katy England, Randy Hardy, Aubrey Linville, Sydney Soderberg and Penni White were elected to serve on the Lead Pastor/Head of Staff Pastor Nominating Committee. While they continue their work, several events have taken place as FPC moves through this transition.

1. Austin Ashenbrenner, a recent Princeton Theology Seminary graduate, was elected by the congregation to serve as the Associate Pastor of Youth and Mission at First Presbyterian Church. Austin’s primary duties will be to provide leadership in the organization and implementation of the youth program and to the Social Justice and Mission Committee. Austin, his wife Erika and daughter Sophia, are looking forward to getting to know the people of FPC! You can read more about Austin in next month’s newsletter!

2. Victor Force, Chaplain for the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, will be assisting Pastor Tom Reid with preaching & pastoral care until FPC is fully staffed. Victor graduated from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1991. He is completing his Masters Degree in Sociology and loves to combine the disciplines of sociology and theology in workshops, the class rooms and the pulpit. Look inside the newsletter for two Bible studies Victor will lead in July!

3. Mary Andersen, a familiar face at FPC, will be working part-time to assist in pastoral care adminis-trative duties such as: scheduling the deacon food ministry, arranging home communion, oversight of the cares and concerns committee, and much, much more! Call Mary at the church office with ques-tions.

Please keep these people in your prayers as they begin this exciting journey on behalf of FPC!

FPC says goodbye this month to two incredibly talented and valuable members of FPC’s staff. Becky Ewing Maguffee will be ending her nearly 11 years of service here on June 30. She will be moving to Manhattan to join her husband, the Rev. Tim Maguffee. As the Director of the Family Hope Center and the Director of Con-gregational Care & Mission, Becky contributed a lasting ministry to the church and the community. A reception was held in her honor Sunday, June 20. Her presence will be missed at FPC and we wish her “good luck and God speed!” as she begins a new journey!

Willow Leenders has been the Youth Coordinator for Mid and Senior High youth at FPC for five years. In that time she has nurtured and strengthened the growing minds of FPC’s youth. A reception was held in her honor Sunday, June 6.

Thank you Becky and Willow for your passion for and your commitment to your work, and for your love of this church and the people in it!

Saying Goodbye to Becky Maguffee and Willow Leenders

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

It takes a Congregation! First Presbyterian Church was transformed into mission control for the Starship Galactic Praise, May 25-28 as eighty-five kids and thirty volunteers participated in Galactic Blast Vacation Bible School and Mid-High Retreat!

The children spent 4 days in the starship Galactic Praise traveling through the wonders of space and exploring God’s incredible creation through out-of-this-world adventures, exciting challenges, great music and hours of fun!

The community outreach project for this year’s VBS was to gather supplies for area teachers that the budget will not cover for the upcoming school year. The children, and members of this congregation, contributed over 1,000 school supplies including computer paper, ink pens, tape, glue, dry erase markers and hand sanitizer, as well as $285 in monetary contributions.

Thank you to the many people who helped make this year’s VBS a huge success!

Thank you to Carson Mansfield and his cooking crew made up of Kurt Fredrickson, Jeff Holgerson, Robert Justus, Pat Putzier, Ben Rohrer, Scott Taggart and Monte White, for coming in early and preparing a delicious breakfast for the congregation. We honored and said farewell to Willow Leenders, showed our appreciation to CE volunteers and cel-ebrated an out of this world VBS! Thanks for your support of FPC’s Christian Education Programs!

A Breakfast to Remember...

It was an amazing week at Heartland Work Camp for Teressa Cooper, Caleb Orr and twenty-two other youth from across northern Kansas and Missouri. The theme of the camp this year was “Be a Hero, Live like Jesus”. The youth that attended the work camp, truly did live like heroes as they got Heartland Presbyterian Camp ready for the sum-mer. Everyone worked hard and enjoyed opportunities for fellowship, prayer and devotions...and then came the time for play at Worlds of Fun. We may have come home tired, but also refreshed in the satisfaction of a job well done!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

First Presbyterian Church believes we are called to grow in our commitment to justice, compassion and love. Jesus came to serve, not to be served. In the same way, we will look outward, not always expecting our needs to be met, but to learn more about the needs of others and offer help and hope to the world.

FPC believes so strongly in mission, that 15% of its annual income, including our pledges, is committed to benevolent giving. For 2010, FPC’s Social Justice and Mission budget is $116,055.

FPC is involved in on-going mission at the local, national and international levels. Social Justice and Mission dollars are distributed year round, here is a partial list of what has been distributed as of today for 2010. For more information about these agencies, and FPC Social Justice & Mission, visit www.fpcsalina.org!

Evening Yoga by CLASSFPC will host a summertime evening Yoga class through the Salina Public Library’s CLASS program.

Need to unwind after a long day at work? Or maybe you just want to increase flexibility and tone your mus-cles? People who have done no physical exercise at all as well as athletes find benefits from yoga, an ancient Indian philosophy (not a religion) that emphasizes personal growth and well-being through practice and discipline. Yoga consists of poses that stretch and strengthen muscles, increase circulation and calm the mind. The instructor will demonstrate each pose and then gently guide you. If you need an easier or more difficult workout, poses can be modified on the spot. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.

Dear Friends,In my throat is the “going-away lump!” It is hard to leave a job that I know and love and a place that I affectionately call ‘home.’ I have thoroughly enjoyed you both as a congregation and as friends.

Over the 11 years that I have been here, I have been truly blessed by God. With this, I have come to know that all blessings are temporary and best held in open hands. Having become firmly rooted, I have found leaving a painful process; moving away disturbs roots that have grown deep. But God removes a blessing only to place another in its place. I am blessed with a new venture of relocating to join my husband, Tim, and taking some time off to discern where God is calling me next.

Thank you for sharing your journey, friendship, faith and love. This church and all who are a part of it will continue to be in my heart and my prayers.
