When Jesus walked the earth before being crucified, He told us what it would be like before He came again. He told us it would be as the days of Noah. “For as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” [NKJV] Matthew 24:37-39
All scripture referenced herein is from the New King James Version
1 THE DAYS BEFORE THE FLOOD
Genesis chapter 6 tell us what it was like before the flood.
Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born
to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives
for themselves of all whom they chose. And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever,
for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” Genesis 6:1-3
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Genesis 6:5
The earth also was corrupt before God and the earth was filled with violence. So God looked upon the
earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to
Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and
behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” Genesis 6:11-13
Several attributes describe what it was like in these days:
Population Explosion. The days before the flood experienced a dramatic increase in the earth’s population…’when men
began to multiply’.
Following Fleshly Lusts. Men selected wives based on outward appearance instead of inward beauty. They chose women
for themselves rather than lean on God’s provision for a spouse based on more lasting and eternal qualities. You might say
they chose the “my way” tree just as Adam and Eve leaned on their own understanding. Because the preceding chapters
in Genesis tell us that Cain’s line was ungodly while Seth’s line was godly, we can reasonably surmise that, by the time of
Noah, these two family lines had merged through marriage….”the sons of God” representing Seth’s descendants and the
“daughters of men” representing Cain’s descendants.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ www.seewritesend.com Page 2 As the Days of Noah
Godly Like Ungodly. Because the godly were marrying the ungodly, it’s reasonable to assume there was no marked
difference in the behavior of those who professed godliness. People likely had a ‘form of godliness but denied its power’.
As people entered into the marital covenant unequally yoked spiritually, matters of faith were likely not taught to children.
If, after all, spiritual matters were un-important when selecting a spouse, why would they be important to pass down the
generations?
Earth Filled with Violence. All flesh, man and beast, was filled with violence. It’s interesting to note that both man and
beast were violent. Naturally, this leads one to ponder a few things. Could this be why and when the dinosaurs were
wiped out? Could it be that the flood waters, which lingered for almost a year, impacted carbon dating? Despite the
debate, these are legitimate questions especially in light of the Biblical record.
Evil Thoughts Continually. The language of Genesis 6 suggests there was a great amount of self-centeredness in those
days. This self-centeredness led to ungodly choices in marriage. This same self-centeredness was the likely cause of the
violence of those days, also.
Does the description of the days of Noah remind you of Paul’s description of the latter days to Timothy?
But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves,
lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving,
unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty,
lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And
from such people turn away! 2 Timothy 3:1-5
I believe the attributes Paul listed to Timothy describe ‘the falling away’—the apostasy—which will take place
before the anti-christ enters the scene and before Jesus returns. When the church at Thessalonica believed they
had missed the return of Christ, Paul wrote them an insightful letter of reassurance.
Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we
ask you, not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from
us, as though the day of Christ had come. Let no one deceive you by any means for that Day will not
come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who
opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in
the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4
But, Paul didn’t say it first. Jesus said we would see lawlessness abound before He returns.
“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. And this gospel of the
kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
Matthew 24:12
2 NOAH’S PATRIARCHS
It’s easy to see that the world today matches the description of the world at the time of the flood -- little
distinction between the godly and the ungodly, people following the desires of the flesh, individuals watching out
only for themselves, the earth filled with violence. Notice also that the world’s population was beginning to
multiply before the flood. What was the earth’s population at the time of the flood and can we illustrate its
dramatic increase in the days of Noah?
With the question before me, I decided to estimate the population in the days of Noah using scripture-first
assumptions that are best explained from a brief review of the genealogy from Adam to Noah as sourced from
Genesis chapter 5.

Overlap in Life Spans of First 10 Biblical Patriarchs from Adam to Noah
Seth means appointed Seed. Adam and Eve knew that God would bring redemption for sin through Seth’s seed.
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth. “For God has appointed
another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” Genesis 4:25
Noah means ‘rest’. Noah was a preacher of righteousness.
…and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of
righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; 2 Peter 2:5
Lineage of Jesus. Each patriarch is specifically named in the lineage of Jesus Christ. Luke 3:36-38
Enoch taken by God. Between the appointed seed of Seth and the salvation of a remnant depicted with Noah are seven
generations. Enoch was the patriarch of the 5th generation after Seth and the 7th generation overall. Enoch did not die,
but was taken by God because of his faithfulness, as implied in scripture and by the meaning of his name which means
‘dedicated’. Enoch loved God. Some believe God’s action toward Enoch is symbolic of the future rapture of the church.
After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and begot sons and
daughters. So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. And Enoch walked with
God; and he was not, for God took him. Genesis 5:22-24
Prophetic Names. If you link the meaning of their names as taken from the New King James Biblical Cyclopedic Index, you
will see the plan of salvation. A man, appointed as a mortal, fixed by and the praise of God, descended and was dedicated
to be pierced with a spear, made low in order to bring comfort and rest.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ www.seewritesend.com Page 4 As the Days of Noah
Flood Begins When Methuselah Dies. Methuselah means ‘man of the spear/javelin’. It also means ‘his death shall bring
judgment’.1 Indeed, the flood began when Methuselah died at 969 years old. He is the oldest documented person in the
Bible.
We do not know the cause of Methuselah’s death. Because he was the oldest patriarch and because his death is
described in Genesis 5 just as it is for the other patriarchs ‘and he died’, it is reasonable to conclude he died naturally
as a result of old age. However, there is speculation he may have been killed as part of the violence of the day
considering his name also means ‘man of the spear’, making him the last martyr before the devastation of the flood.2
It is the timing of Methuselah’s death in relation to the launch of the flood that I find so remarkable. When
Methuselah died, the flood began. The removal of someone marking the beginning of a time of judgment reminded
me of what Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica. Paul said that when ‘He who now restrains’ is ‘taken out of the
way’, the ‘lawless one will be revealed’, where ‘He’ is commonly interpreted as the Holy Spirit of the church marking
the end of the church age.
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is
taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the
breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. The coming of the lawless one is
according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous
deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth that they might
be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:7-10
3 POPULATION ASSUMPTIONS
Looking at scripture for clues, I made some assumptions about the birth-death process in the days before Noah in
order to derive a population estimate at the time of the flood when ‘men began to multiply.’
Although scripture does not tell us how many children each patriarch had, it does tell us that each patriarch had
sons and daughters. It also tells us when they had the son (not necessarily the first son) who was part of Jesus’
lineage.
One Child Every 25 Years. Adam and Eve had three sons by the time Adam was 130 (Cain, Abel, Seth). We can reasonably
assume God provided each son with a wife (a sister) with whom they could populate the earth—one man and one woman
just as He provided Eve to Adam. Before Seth was born, Cain was worried about someone taking his life because he had
killed his brother Abel. The people whom he feared could have been his own descendants or, more likely, the offspring of
Abel who would have motive to kill him in retaliation. So, we know that by the time Cain killed Abel, there were other
people on the earth besides just Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel. We’ll make the reasonable assumption that by the time Adam
was 130 years old, he had three sons and at least two daughters (one for Cain and one for Abel)—and sometime thereafter
another daughter for Seth. We will not assume Seth married into the ungodly line of Cain’s descendants, but rather, God
provided him a wife through Adam and Eve. So, if Adam had six children by the time he was let’s say 150, this would
average to one child every 25 years.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ www.seewritesend.com Page 5 As the Days of Noah
Child-Bearing Years Through Age 600. Scripture tells us Adam and Eve had sons and daughters after Seth. Adam was 130
when he had Seth, so this means he could still have children after age 130. Adam lived to 930. We will assume he
continued to have children through age 600. We selected 600 as the basis for this assumption because Noah entered the
ark at age 600 and left the ark at age 601. We are told that, after the flood, the whole earth was re-populated from his
three sons Shem, Ham and Japheth which implies Noah had no additional children after the flood.
Now the sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. And Ham was the
father of Canaan. These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was populated.
Genesis 10:18-19
Adam Had 40 Children. If we assume Adam had children through the age of 600 and had one child every 25 years (on
average), this would produce 24 total children. The Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus of the first century AD, reports that
Adam and Eve had 56 children3. For the purposes of this paper’s estimation, we will assume Adam and Eve had between
24 and 56 children. Specifically, we choose to be conservative in our estimate and assume 40 children for Adam and Eve.
Noah had 3 Sons and 0 Daughters. Scripture tells us Noah had three sons when he was 500 years old (Genesis 5:32). It
also tells us he was 600 when the flood began (Genesis 7:6, Genesis 7:11) and that his middle son, Shem, was 100 years old
when he had a son two years after the flood. This means his middle son Shem was 98 when the flood began. So yes, more
than one verse supports the literal interpretation that Noah was 500 (more or less a few years) when he had his sons.
Considering the other patriarchs had sons and daughters, it’s reasonable to assume Noah also had daughters. If he did,
they are not mentioned and perished in the flood. For the purpose of estimating the population at the time of the flood,
we are going to assume Noah only had three sons.
And Noah was five hundred years old and Noah begot Shem, Ham and Japheth. Genesis 5:32
Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was on the earth. Genesis 7:6
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on
that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Genesis 7:11
Noah’s sons had an average of 10 children each. We are told that from Noah’s three sons (Japheth, Shem and Ham), the
earth as we know it today was repopulated. Noah’s three sons each had a wife who survived with them on the ark. We
are also told that Noah had 16 grandsons. We will safely assume he also had 16 granddaughters, one for each grandson,
to help repopulated the earth. This equates to 32 grandchildren or an average of 10 grandchildren per each of his three
sons, rounding down.
The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. Genesis 10:2
The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put and Canaan. Genesis 10:6
The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. Genesis 10:22
Gradual Decline in Off-Spring. If Adam had 40 children while each of Noah’s sons had ten(10) children, we might make
the assumption that each generation following Adam saw a decline in the number of offspring. We are going to make this
Many expect The Gog-Magog war, foretold in Ezekiel 38-39, to occur just before the peace treaty of the Great Tribulation
(although there is debate about its timing). This is a war between Israel and a confederation of her enemies led by the Prince
of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal of the land of Magog. When you examine the ancient names of the countries in the confederation
of Israel’s enemies, you see countries taking the same names as the sons of Japheth and Ham noted above in bold text. You
might say that the Gog-Magog war is, in a loose sense, a war between Israel (descendants of Shem) with the rest of the world
(descendants of Japheth and Ham) as led by what is commonly interpreted as the leader of Russia “prince of Rosh”.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ www.seewritesend.com Page 6 As the Days of Noah
assumption, again choosing to be conservative, because lifespans were probably shorter as people died to violence and we
know God established them to be shorter post-flood.
Increasing Violence Takes Up to One-Fourth. Scripture tells us the earth was filled with violence at the time of the flood.
We know that violence began as early as the first son born to man---with Cain killing his brother Abel. We do not know
how many people died as a result of violence, but we have chosen to assume that it gradually approached 25% of each
generation with a portion of these killed too early to reproduce. We assume 25% because Revelation 6:8 tells us about
violence in the latter days taking one-fourth of the earth….and we have no other way of coming up with a figure related to
deaths through violence. So, we will use Revelation as a clue even though there is only a loose connection.
And I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades
followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with
hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth. Revelation 6:8
4 LARGE POPULATION
Using a scripture-first conservative approach, assumptions about the birth-death process of the ancient
generations are established. Working the math on these assumptions, one can see how plausible it is for the
earth’s population to have been as large as the nearly 7 billion on Earth today. This is how the math works:
1. We start with Adam and Eve who are one couple with an assumed 40 children (Seth is one of these children from
whom is the lineage of Jesus). So, in Adam’s generation there are 2 people (Adam and Eve) who died before the
flood.
2. The next generation is the generation of Seth. There are 40 people in this generation for an assumed 20 couples. We
assume 1% of these 20 couples could not have children (rounded down to the integer = 19 couples). For those
couples who could have children, we assume each couple had 35 children for a total of 665 births. We assume all of
these died before the flood.
3. The math proceeds in a like fashion through each generation, working with percentages and rounding down when
these percentages yield a fractional estimate. In order to produce a conservative estimate, the number of offspring
per couple decreases over time and the number of deaths due to violence increases over time.

If we plot the cumulative total of estimated births through the time of the flood, one can see
that surely ‘men began to multiply on the face of the earth’
Our assumptions yield an estimate of 8.5 billion living at the time of the flood!
Today’s population is approximately 7.0 billion
Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth… Genesis 6:1a
5 CONCLUDING REMARKS
Jesus said that when He returns, it will be “as the days of Noah”. It will be business as usual. People will be going
about the normal course of their lives. They will be planning for their futures. They will be marrying. They will be
having children. They will be starting businesses. They will be focused on the pursuits of this life, watchful of their
earthly future but not their eternal future.
“For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,
until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all
away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” Matthew 24:38-39
Although we see examples where God allowed destruction to cities and empires throughout the Biblical record,
Noah’s flood is the only time we see the full hand of God’s wrath on the entire earth. Because it is the only time in
the Biblical record where God destroyed all life except for a remnant---and because Jesus told us that when He
comes again it will be as the days of Noah (speaking of the spiritual state of mankind), I believe a careful analysis of
Noah’s flood provides insight about the latter days.
When I examine the story of Noah taken alone, I see three groups of people:
Those who died before the flood
Those who died during the flood

Those who died after the flood
Of those who died before the flood, there are another three groups of people:
Those who died naturally
Those who died as a result of violence
Those who were ‘taken by God’. Scripture indicates only one, Enoch.
I realize there are different perspectives about the rapture among Christians. There are staunch advocates in a
pre-tribulation rapture, a mid-tribulation rapture, a second-coming rapture and no rapture at all each with
scripture to back the respective positions. To be clear, I do not promote any one interpretation in a dogmatic
fashion especially as part of this essay. That said, however, I do see what may be several symbolic associations
between the worldwide destruction of the latter days and Noah’s flood. I emphasize that these associations are
personal observations. They are not dogmatic claims.
Enoch could foreshadow the rapture of the church. Faithful Enoch was taken by God.
So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. And Enoch walked with God; and he
was not, for God took him. Genesis 5:23-24
Methuselah could foreshadow the deaths (natural causes and through violence) of non-raptured believers
before the anti-christ is revealed. The flood began after the last living patriarch, Methuselah, died. We do
not know if Methuselah died naturally or as a result of escalating violence. His death, being timed with the
start of the judgment, could foreshadow what Paul referred to as the removal of ‘He who now restrains’
(commonly interpreted as the Holy Spirit) which will happen before the anti-christ is revealed. This ‘removal’
could be signified by the rapture of the church. It could be signified by the legal death of publically displayed
Christianity. It could be signified by the natural death of a particular person, evangelist or entire generation.
It could be signified by the martyr of believers in Jesus Christ. It may be none of these. It may be all of these.
Regardless of the specifics, I do think the timing of Methuselah’s death in relation to the flood is symbolic and
prophetic of the removal of the church age---the taking out of the way of He who now restrains---before the
anti-christ is revealed.
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is
taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the
breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. The coming of the lawless one is
according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders. 2 Thessalonians 2:7-9
Noah could foreshadow the salvation and protection of a remnant. I’ve heard others associate the salvation
of Noah with the rapture of believers—that is, being caught up in the clouds with Christ. But, Noah and his
family lived through the storm. They were protected and saved, but they were not removed from the earth
during the tribulation. The protection of Noah and his family, in my opinion, is symbolic of God’s pattern of
saving a remnant of His chosen people. In my opinion, it is not symbolic of the rapture of the church. And,
with respect to saving a remnant of His chosen people, God will do this again in the latter days of the Great
Tribulation when He protects a remnant of Israeli Jews during the rage of the satan-indwelled anti-christ.
Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should
feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days. Revelation 12:6 speaking of the woman
“Israel” being protected by God when, what many interpret, the anti-Christ tramples Jerusalem and
desecrates the temple.
“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in
the holy place” (whoever reads let him understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the
_____________________________________________________________________________________ www.seewritesend.com Page 9 As the Days of Noah
mountains. Let him who is on the housetop not come down to take anything out of his house. And let
him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those
with nursing babies in those days! And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbbath.
For then there will be great tribulation such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this
time, no, nor ever shall be.” Matthew 24:15-21
Notice the comment in the scripture that was embedded into Jesus’ words ‘whoever reads let him understand’.
Did you realize the book of Revelation is the only book of the Bible that begins with a promise to those who read
it?
Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which
are written in it; for the time is near. Revelation 1:3
Herein is the good news----the blessing that comes from reading and keeping God’s precepts---the blessing that
comes from remaining faithful to Jesus Christ, who is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the
One who lives, was dead and is alive forevermore---the one who came and died and rose again so that we might
have life and have it more abundantly. Revelation chapter 1, John 10:10
“Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which
shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth”. Revelation 3:10
“Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that
will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” Luke 21:36

Accept the Free Gift of Salvation
In the beginning, God created mankind in His own image—male and female---Adam and Eve. It was good. God provided for them and walked
with them in the garden He created for them. They were created with a three-fold purpose---to have fellowship with God, to have fellowship
with each other as they populated the earth and to care for and be good stewards of creation.
God in His perfect wisdom allowed Adam and Eve to be tested with the answer provided in advance. He gave them a choice, pointed out the
rewards and the warnings, but ultimately gave man free will. Despite having the answer in advance, man chose to lean on ‘his own
understanding’. Man fell. Man sinned. God punished Adam and Eve when they sinned, but He still provided for them and paved a way for
them to be reunited back to Himself. God clothed them with tunics of skin from a sacrificial animal---the first time we saw death as a result of
sin---the first time we saw blood shed to cover sin. As early as Genesis 3:21, we saw God’s perfect, loving, forgiving, protecting, sacrificial love
for the apple of His eye---mankind, created in His own image. Throughout scripture, we see the nature of God depicted in a pattern of love,
provision, choices, warnings, punishment, protection and ultimately salvation through His love.
Throughout the ages, we see mankind repeatedly falling away from God by following ‘his own wisdom’ instead. Throughout the ancient ages,
we see blood—wherein there is life---being offered by man to God as the covering ‘atonement’ for sin. Man sins. Man repents. Man pays the
price through the sacrificial killing of an innocent animal to symbolize life (blood) covering death (sin). But God---again in his perfect wisdom
full of grace said ‘enough’. There is too much sin. There is too much killing of innocent blood. Rather than man shedding innocent blood as a
sacrifice to God, God would shed innocent blood as a sacrifice for man----once and for all. That is what God did when He sent Jesus, His one
and only Son, perfect in every way—to die as God’s sacrifice for us. We sinned. God provided the atonement just as He did for Adam and Eve
and just as we see in many Biblical accounts. Despite our falling away, God is right there ready to provide and forgive and pay the price for us.
This is the redemptive story of Jesus--the redemptive message in the whole of scripture. The Old Testament and the New Testament are
woven together by a single golden thread. That golden thread is the plan of salvation through God’s son Jesus that God arranged. Although
scripture is filled with what many see as ‘doom and gloom’, it is replete with words of encouragement to persevere and to remain faithful to
Jesus with eternal life and salvation to those who do. All you need to do to receive God’s grace is Admit, Believe and Confess. Admit you are a
sinner and will never be good enough on your own to be in God’s favor. Believe in Jesus Christ as God’s sacrificial atonement for your sin—a
one and done solution. Confess the name of Jesus---let others know you follow Him. Do these things. Ask God to forgive you. Ask Jesus to
come into your heart. Ask Him to direct your path. Pray always. Read your Bible. Come into regular fellowship with other believers. This is
what Jesus meant when he said one must be ‘born again’. John 3:3
That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him
from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the
mouth confession is made to salvation. Romans 10:9-10
