Comprehension Placement AssessmentThe Fast Track Reading Comprehension Placement Assessment is the firststep in the Fast Track Reading program. Students read a series ofgraded passages (as shown here) to the teacher. When students arriveat the level where they are decoding the text with a 90–94 percentaccuracy rate, they are placed at that level. Students assessed atLevel 1 begin Fast Track Reading in the Word Work Strand; studentsassessed at Levels 2–7 will move between the Word Work andComprehension Strands.

Word Work Assessment GuideThe Word Work Assessment Guide places students within the correctdecodable book and word study skill lesson. Assessments should be usedto test students at the beginning of instruction and again uponcompletion of instruction. They are designed to help teachers evaluate arange of skill areas, including phonological awareness, phonics anddecoding, high-frequency words, and word study skills, as shown onpages 3–5.

Phonological AwarenessThe assessments in the phonological awareness section are designed to evaluate howwell your students segment, blend, and manipulate sounds. The student is asked tolisten to each word, or series of sounds, and then respond by identifying, for instance,the initial, medial, or final sound.

Phonics and DecodingAssessments in this section determinestudents’ understanding of syllablepatterns and their ability to decipherpseudowords. Using these assessments,the teacher shows the student lists ofpseudowords and asks them to decodeand say as many as possible in eachsection.

High-Frequency WordsThe High-Frequency Words Quickümay be used repeatedly to measurestudents’ ability to identify and readhigh-frequency words. The student isgiven a list of words that correspondsto the decodable book they are readingand is asked to read each word asquickly as possible. The teacher recordsthe number of words read correctly inone minute.
