Review of Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Joint Australian/NewZealand Standards are subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue ofamendments or new editions as necessary. PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee

IT/1, Information SystemsInterconnection, to supersede AS/NZS 4802.3:1994. This Standard is

identical with and has been reproduced from ISO/IEC 8802-3:1996, Information technologyTelecommunications and information exchange between systemsLocal and metropolitan area

networksSpecific requirements, Part 3: Carrier sense multiple access with collision detection

(CSMA/CD) access method and physical layer specifications.

The objective of this Standard is to provide designers of local area networks with a specification

employing CSMA/CD as the access method which encompasses several media types and techniques

for signal rates from 1 Mb/s to 20 Mb/s, and provides the necessary specification and related

    parameter values for 10 Mb/s and1 Mb/s baseband implementations. Specifications for 10BASE-T,

10BASE-FP, 10BASE-FB and layer management are also included.

In January 1997, the IEC commenced numbering its Standards from 60000 by adding 60000 to the

number of each existing Standard. This co-ordinates IEC numbering with ISO numbering. During the

transition period an IEC Standard might be identified by its new number or its old number (e.g.IEC 60050 or IEC 50).

The terms normative and informative have been used in this Standard to define the application of

the annex to which they apply. A normative annex is an integral part of a Standard, whereas an

informative annex is only for information and guidance.

As this Standard is reproduced from an International Standard, the following applies:

    (a) Its number does not appear on each page of text and its identity is shown only on the cover and

    title page.

    (b) In the source text this International Standard should read this Australian/New Zealand

    Standard.

    (c) A full point should be substituted for a comma when referring to a decimal marker.

References to International Standards should be replaced by references to equivalent Australian or

    Australian/New Zealand Standards, as follows:
