AS Media evaluation (social groups)

How does your media product represent particular social groups? Through the use of costumes, Angus was portrayed as a middle class working man. His white shirt and tie shows that he has a formal day job in an office-based environment. In some modern day horror films, office jobs tend to become the basis for triggering a nerve or difficult past memory and therefore showing the audience a, new, side of a previously introduced character. Angus’ red tie is a key signifier in the horror genre and can therefore become a symbol for the character. For example, Jason Voorhees is now iconic for wearing the ‘purge like’ mask in every one of his horror films, allowing him to be easily recognised as his character. Our target audience was aimed at male’s aged 16-35. Which meant we had to adapt Angus’ character to relate as closely as we could to our audience. One edit of our film showed Angus stalking the males from his past on social media, whom he now considered as his ‘enemies’. This clip would have shown that Angus wasn’t as different as he made out and he could relate to our audience more. Finding common ground with the audience is key with the horror genre in order for the film to have the greatest effect on its viewers, therefore, the location of Angus’ house was important with the representation of class and status. We made sure that he didn’t live in a place that would disconnect his relationship with our audience (e.g. an upper class house) as the viewers may not be able to relate to his lifestyle. This could have taken away from the overall feeling of the sequence, as there would have been very little/ no connection between the audience and the characters.

How does your media product represent particular social groups? !Through the use of costumes, Angus was portrayed as a middle class working man.

!!For example, Jason Voorhees is now iconic for wearing the ‘purge like’ mask in every one of his horror films, allowing him to be easily recognised as his character. !!!!Our target audience was aimed at male’s aged 16-35. !!Finding common ground with the audience is key with the horror genre in order for the film to have the greatest effect on its viewers, therefore, the location of Angus’ house was important with the representation of class and status. We made sure that he didn’t live in a place that would disconnect his relationship with our audience (e.g. an upper class house) as the viewers may not be able to relate to his lifestyle. This could have taken away from the overall feeling of the sequence, as there would have been very little/ no connection between the audience and the characters.

!In our sequence we conformed to the ideas of bullying. We showed that bullying does have a severe impact on peoples lives and emphasised that by taking the effects of longterm bulling to the extent we did, with Angus’ character. We also presented the stereotypes of women in a heterosexual relationship, where the woman cooks the dinner and the man goes out to work. However we do not believe that males are more dominant than females, we gave both genders a fair sided part in the narrative. We showed this through the argument between Angus and Scarlett where she displays her ability to stand her ground against her partner. !Angus is shown to also have some stereotypical female traits as well as male. His character isn’t a strong, masculine person but is in fact quite frail because of his lack of mental stability. Scarlett portrays a tough female character as she was able to control the situation with Angus In horror films some males tend to be victimised which means they can lose their sense of masculinity relating slightly to Angus’ character.
