What sort of complaints could people have had agasint the Catholic Church?

Divisions in the Church:The Reformation

1. What does “to reform” mean ? So explain what “The Reformation” was about.

2. What sort of things about the Catholic Church do you think the protesters wanted to “reform”? Look at the pictures on your sheet and write a list of points.

Catholics agreed that things needed changing, so they set up the Counter-Reformation to do this.

However, Martin Luther did not stop with just criticising the Church. He thought Catholics should change their beliefs. This is why the Church got very angry with the Protestants – they were trying to change Christian teaching!!• no Sacraments – only baptism, celebration of

the Lord’s supper. The rest are “made up”by the Church and should not be celebrated.

• no transubstantiation: the bread/ wine do not become body/ blood of Jesus in Holy Communion

• no priests – everyone is equal, no-one in particular has God’s authority to forgive sins, say mass.

• no obedience to the Pope – everyone can decided what the Bible says for themselves.

**The Church started to arrest and burn some of the protestants as “heretics” (people who believe false teaching). Draw a picture of a burning protestant “heretic” !

Catholic families took great risks to hide priests in hiding holes called “priest holes” in their homes.

Where could you hide a priest from Elizabeth’s soldiers in your home ? Draw the plan of your house and think where you would put him.

While the Pope was catching and burning heretics,…Elizabeth I, who succeeded Henry VIII, wanted everyone to follow Protestant beliefs. Anyone who was caught following Catholic beliefs (eg going to mass) was fined the first time, arrested the second time, then executed. But priests were arrested immediately.
