Neoprene (Powder-Free)

Powder

Latex to Synthetic Natural rubber latex allergy is a significant medical concern that affects healthcare workers as well as the general population. It is estimated that 8 to 12 percent of U.S. healthcare workers are latex-sensitive, and that workers exposed to latex gloves and other products containing natural rubber latex may develop allergic reactions.5

Powder-Free

Polyisoprene (Powder-Free)

Powder to Powder-Free As of 18 January 2017, USA has officially put the FDA ban on the use of powdered medical gloves into effect. As stated on its website, the FDA determined that, “While the use of powdered gloves is decreasing, they pose an unreasonable and substantial risk of illness or injury to healthcare providers, patients and other individuals who are exposed to them, which cannot be corrected through new or updated labeling."

In fact, powder can delay wound healing and contribute to post-operative complications such as adhesions, infections and granulomas.1,2,3 The potential risks of powder to clinicians are clear as well: it can contribute to compromised skin health and Irritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD), which causes dry, itchy and irritated skin.4

The Cardinal Health difference: A proprietary glove mold for natural hand movement Hand fatigue is a fairly common experience. It is a person’s inability to generate the desired amount of force necessary to perform a task with his or her hands. It can occur in individuals who use their hands continually for extended periods of time.

During surgical procedures, the hands are the link between the surgical team and the patient. For surgeons, their hands are their livelihood. Their hands need to be protected from exposure to blood-borne pathogens and infectious diseases while, at the same time, uninhibited in order to perform and care for their patients.

A glove mold is a hand-shaped former used in the production of gloves. Cardinal Health developed a surgical glove mold with an independent thumb feature that replicates the anatomical position of a resting hand. The thumb on the Cardinal Health™ Surgical Glove Mold is prominent and positioned away from, or in front of, the finger plane to allow for natural hand movement.

Independent study: In order to demonstrate the benefit of this proprietary glove mold feature, Cardinal Health sponsored an independent study through a third-party lab comparing samples produced on two different glove molds — one with an independent thumb feature and the other without. The study simulated the flexion (i.e. movement towards the palm) and extension (i.e. movement away from the palm) of the thumb on an artificial hand, measuring the force required to flex and extend the thumb.

The results of the study demonstrated that the samples featuring the independent thumb required less force for similar displacements of the thumb than those without an independent thumb feature.1

The Cardinal Health™ Surgical Glove Mold was designed with performance in mind. It helps allow for an anatomical fit, natural movement in the fingers, thumb and palm and features an interlocking, beaded cuff design that helps to reduce roll-down. 1 Bennet, M. A. & Tekamp, D. A. Surgical Glove Comparison Testing. Stress Engineering Services. February 2012.

Cardinal Health™ Surgical Gloves — committed to environmental sustainability Sustainable packaging Cardinal Health is proud to be the only company to sell all of its surgical gloves in sustainable, half-fold packaging. Half-fold packaging provides customers with a standardized dispenser box height across the entire portfolio, while reducing packaging waste (as compared to full-size packaging) and maximizing storage space.

Packaging waste reduction: Require less packaging materials — helping customers to meet their sustainability goals.

• Dispenser boxes use at least 15 percent1 less cardboard than similar, full-sizedcompetitive packaging

• Individual pouches are at least 48 percent2 smaller than competitive products

Storage space maximization: Takes up less space, fits in existing storage bins and on shelving with the option for stacking — helping to allow customers optimize their storage space.

• Dispenser boxes are at least 30 percent3 smaller than similar, full-sized competitive packaging

In addition, 95 percent of our surgical glove inner wallets, or wrap material, are made from recyclable4 and renewable paper sources — machine glazed paper and crepe paper.5 Our product dispenser boxes and ship case boxes also utilize at least 80 percent recycled corrugated cardboard.

These efforts have received praise from customers and purchasing organizations, including the green leaf icon designation from the Premier Healthcare Alliance, which identifies“environmentally preferred purchasing products” for its members.

Manufacturing In our surgical glove manufacturing facility, Cardinal Health has many initiatives underway to address and improve non-hazardous waste recycling, heat recovery and water recycling. Our energy conservation efforts have been recognized by external third-parties:

• Two Energy Awards, one in 2008 and one in 2011, by King Mongkut University of Technology, sponsored by the Depart- ment of Alternative Energy and Efficiency in Thailand.

• Received Green Industry Award in 2011 — Level II certification for Sustainability by the Ministry of Industry in Thailand.
