    INTRODUO

THE TEN HAND SETS OF NORTHERN SHAOLIN

AS DEZ FORMAS DE MOS DO SHAOLIN DO NORTE

    (according to three primary documents)

(de acordo com os trs documentos primrios)

    [circa 1960]

[translation by Paul Brennan, Jan, 2012]

    -

[This trio of documents was supplied to me through a trio of sifus: Nelson

Ferreira, who obtained them from Jason VanWinkle, who received them from his

    teacher, Robert Louie.

Document A, titledShaolin Boxing Manual, is a printed document of five

distinct parts: a contents page, a list of thirty-six names acknowledging those who

chipped in for printing costs, a concise essay on Shaolin principles, a bio of Long

Zixiang, and terse descriptions for the numbered movements of the ten sets.

Document B is a handwritten document containing only the terse descriptions

for the movements, which were in this document originally unnumbered. (I will

translate here only its pure text and leave the numberings and scribblings added

by later hands ignored.)According to Sifu Louie: Document A represents Northern Shaolin as taught

by Long Zixiang; Document B represents Northern Shaolin as taught by Yan

Shangwu; the original first page of Document B went missing and was replaced

with two pages handwritten byYans student, Wong Jackman (Document C).

As for dating the documents, none contain an explicit date, although a passage

from the bio in Document A reveals a date for it of roughly 1960. Sifu Louie told

me he obtained the two documents together in the 1960s, which would mean

Document B could not have been written much later than Document A. Althoughit is also possible that Document B may have been written earlier than 1960, the

document itself does not give us sufficient reason to think so.

Combining these three documents should help give us a more complete map

to the ten hand sets of Northern Shaolin. These documents are vital to Northern

Shaolin because they appear to be the earliest documents describing the workings

of the ten hand sets. We must hope that more such texts will turn up, and

hopefully dated even earlier and written in more detail, but until they do, these

represent our most reliable manual for accurately practicing this material.]

(Traduzirei aqui

apenas o texto puro e ignorarei as numeraes e rabiscos adicionados

Estes documentos so

    destas rotinas.]

Cantonese, I will merely write them here in stable and precise Mandarin pinyin.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO SHAOLIN BOXING [by Long Zixiang]INTRODUO GERAL PARA O BOXE DE SHAOLIN [por Long Zixiang]

The capacity for martial arts to develop both health and self-defense lies in

an adherence to the basic principles of all exercise. Stylistic variations between

these arts are almost limitless because they have been passed down from such a

long time ago and because there have been so many skilled practitioners. Each

schoolsmovements and methods may be different, yet they all train methods of

body, step, hand these are the basics.

In the body there are the eight gates as well as the three methods [body, step,

hand]. In this system there are the ten practice routines with which to train the

use [of the eight and the three]. Additionally, there are the twelve requirements,

the three vulnerable areas, the three alignment points, the four ways of vanishing,

  • 7/24/2019 As Dez Mos de Shaolin - Manual 1960

    38/134

    36

the three quicknesses, the twelve prohibitions, and the eight mentalities. If you

lack any of these things, you will not achieve the art.

The eight gates, namely thebodyseight means of applying techniques, are: 1.

    fist, 2. palm, 3. elbow, 4. head, 5. hip, 6. knee, 7. leg, 8. foot.

What are the twelve requirements? [1] The emotions must be stable. [2] Thecourage must be great. [3] The eyes must be discerning. [4] The hands must be

lively. [5] The shoulders must be level. [6] The body must be straight. [7] The

groin must stretch. [8] The stance must be stable. [9] The front leg must bend.

[10] The back leg must straighten. [11] The joints must have a quality of fluidity.

[12] The three vulnerable areas must be given attention.

The three vulnerable areas are: [1] above face, [2] middle solar plexus, [3]

below groin. You must ardently be aware of them, ready to protect them at all

times. The three alignment points are: [1] hand, [2] foot, [3] shoulder.

The mind should be aware so the hands can directly confront. The three

quicknesses are: [1] the mind is quick, [2] the hands are quick, [3] and the eyes

    are quick.

The four ways of vanishing are: [1] to lift a leg and thus disappear on one side,

[2] to spin the body and thus disappear behind, [3] to leap up and thus disappear

below, [4] and to straighten the body and thus disappear within.

The twelve prohibitions are: [1] cowardice, [2] timidity, [3] distracted eyes, [4]tardy hands, [5] stupid legs, [6] confused feet, [7] crooked body, [8] slanting

shoulders, [9] joints twisted and stuck, [10] the three points not aligning with

each other, [11] advancing without coordinating defense of the three vulnerable

areas, [12] and not being well-versed in the practice routines.

As for the eight mentalities, they are: [1] The emotions rest like an undisturbed

boulder. [2] The eyes dazzle like [sunlight reflecting off] a well-polished mirror

[i.e. the expression in your eyes should make your opponent want to look away].

[3] The hands are like electric shocks, suddenly appearing then suddenly gone.

[4] The steps are like birds in flight flitting back and forth, and taking flight

suddenly. [5] The feet themselves are like swallows taking up water [the way they

peck the surface for barely a moment], rising and falling lightly and alertly. [6]

The body is like a phoenix flying through to get to the sunny slope, turning and

veering with agility and liveliness. [7] When you become still, be still as a

mountain. [8] When you move, blur like a flash of lightning.

If you train in this way, then through daily and dedicated study, you will

naturally master it. What would happen if you encountered an attacker and were

  • 7/24/2019 As Dez Mos de Shaolin - Manual 1960

    39/134

    37

still in doubt about your skill? Therefore how can you neglect the training? Focus

your mind, drive your body, and then it will work for you.

no ir conseguir dominar a arte.

    1 punho

    2 palma

    3 cotovelo

    4 cabea5 quadril

    6 joelho

    7 perna

    8 p

    Quais so os doze requisitos?

[1] As emoes devem ser estveis.

[2] A coragem deve ser grande.

[3] Os olhos devem ser perspicazes.

[4] As mos devem estar vivas.

[5] Os ombros devem estar relaxados.

[6] O corpo deve estar alinhado.

[7] A virilha deve abrir (alongar).

[8] A postura deve ser estvel.

[9] A perna da frente deve dobrar.

[10] A perna de trs deve endireitar.

    38

    As trs reas vulnerveis so:

    [1] acima face

    [2] meio - plexo solar

    [3] abaixo - virilha.

Os trs pontos de alinhamento so:

    [1] mo

    [2] p

    [3] ombro

A mente deve estar atenta assim as mos podem confrontar diretamente. As

    trs velocidades so:

    [1] a mente rpida

    [2] as mos so rpidas

    [3] olhos so rpidos

As quatro formas de evaso so:

    [2] girar o corpo e desaparecer atrs

[3] saltar para cima e desaparecer abaixo

[4] endireitar o corpo e desaparecer para dentro

    Os doze proibies so:

    [1] covardia

    [2] timidez

    [3] olhos distrados

    [4] mos lentas

    39

    [5] pernas vacilantes

    [6] ps confusos

    [7] corpo torto

    [8] ombros inclinados

    Quanto s oito mentalidades, so:

    desaparecem.

    voc.

My teacher Long Zixiang is from Guangdong province, Xinhui county. He

had a strong yearning for martial arts, and so when he was eighteen [i.e.

seventeen 1926], he put aside literary studies so he could train. He did

obeisance for instruction to a famous teacher of northern styles, the late Gu

Ruzhang. Gu saw that he was hard-working and smart, that he loved to learn and

was not afraid to ask questions. Recognizing that Long was good raw material

waiting to be molded, he then set out to teach him everything he knew, passing it

on meticulously. Thus Long received a northern system of qigong, the Shaolin

boxing art, and all sorts of weapons, learning each thing to perfection, particularly

Taiji Boxing, which he immersed himself in and has achieved a profound level.

Beyond his martial training, he also became a top expert in injury medicine.

And so it was that in 1935 [age 26], he took the post of director of the

Guangzhou Martial Arts Club. He also became both a committee member and the

competition director for the Guangzhou Martial Arts Society.

But after the Marco Polo Bridge Incident [July, 1937 age 28], he urged his

disciples to flee farther inland. He wanted to help those who had been injured,

and of those who sought aid of him, he healed them all. Due to this, his famespread.

When peace had been restored in China [1945age 36], he came to Hong Kong

and started the Chinese Physical Fitness Society with his close colleagues, to

which he was appointed as the director. 1949 [age 40], he accepted the post of

head physical fitness instructor to the Hong Kong WeaversUnion. And then in

1950 [age 41], he was appointed instructor to the Taiji class of the Kowloon

General Chamber of Commerce, where he has been promoting Chinese martial

arts for close to ten years now [which dates this document at late 1959 / early

1960], and in that time I among others have been able to learn from him and get

a deeper understanding of boxing arts.

We could not have been more fortunate in our teacher, for he is a man very

concerned over the well-being of others and full of benevolence. For instance,

reaching beyond his martial and medical expertise, he has been appointedchairman of the Yaumati Neighborhood Welfare Association for two terms

running, making numerous contributions toward the benefit of the community.

In return they decided they should make him the lifelong honorary chairman of

the Association, and we, all of his students, salute him in congratulation. [This

lifetime honorary position did not last very long as he unfortunately died just a

few years later in 1963.] The way that he treats people is very well-mannered, and

if you did not know him, you would never guess he was famous throughout the

martial arts community.[The bio above is clearly based upon and contains many verbatim borrowings

from the one that appeared in Long ZixiangsTaiji book (published Jan, 1952):

sabia, passando meticulosamente.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LONG ZIXIANG (by Huang Chuying)UMA BREVE HISTRIA DE LONG ZIXIANG (por Huan Chuying)

Teacher Long Zixiang is from Xinhui county of Guangdong province. He is

forty-three years old this year. [This would indicate he was born in 1908, but as

the Chinese traditionally add a year for the year spent in the womb, he was

therefore actually born in 1909, and would in the year this was written actually

have been forty-two.] With people he is straightforward and casual, but the way

that he treats them is very well-mannered, for his personality is modest, having

attained a high level within himself. If you did not know him, you would never

guess him to be a man of martial prowess. When instructing students, he hasgathered many of the teaching methods of modern institutions. He is a systematic

and excellent guide, never displaying a bullying aspect toward his students.

Beyond being adept in the skills of both northern and southern styles of martial

arts, he is also an expert in injury medicine.

    ferimentos.

When he was eighteen years old [1926 again taking account of the womb

year and therefore he was actually seventeen], he had a strong yearning for

martial arts, and he put aside literary studies so he could train. He threw himself

into the Guangdong/Guangxi Martial Arts Research Institute, becoming a formal

pupil learning skills from the famous Northern stylist Gu Ruzhang. At that time,

Gu had a deep friendship with the Choy Li Fut Boxing teacher, Tan San of

Guangzhou, and there was exchange between them of students and instructors.

Gu saw that Long was young and promising, and beyond the skills he personallytaught him, he also encouraged him to train as Tansdisciple. Thus in addition to

learning the Choy Li Fut techniques from Tan, he immersed himself in a study of

Gusqigong, the Shaolin boxing art, weapons, Taiji Boxing, and so on, becoming

    an especially unique exponent.

Suiting well to both southern and northern styles, his posture is agile, yet his

stance is firm. More than that, he has ingenuity of his own, developing the

technique of rukhunfurls awing. After he had achieved skill, he sought to be a

teaching assistant in the Guangzhou Martial Arts Institute, and later on receivedhis own teaching space. When he got his teaching position in Liantan, there was

an obnoxious boxing monk notorious in the area who wanted to take advantage

of Longsyouth. He came to the school and kicked a tray. Long could not tolerate

this and had no choice but to perform Choy Li Futsskeweringpunch. After just

a few minutes the monk had become humble, and Long was for a long while after

nicknamed RukhsWing of Liantan.Later he also traveled to Guangning county

to teach students privately for three years.

Gu came south three times, and he invited Long to return to Guangdong totake up the position of director of the Guangzhou Martial Arts Club so he could

resign [1935 age 26]. At this time, there was also there the group of the

Guangzhou Martial Arts Society, and Long was put forth to be a committee

member and additionally was appointed as their director of competitions.

When Guangzhou fell into enemy hands [July, 1937 age 28], finding itself

alone and cut off from help, life at this point entered a new phase. Then when

peace had been restored to Hong Kong and Macao [the Japanese formally

surrendering them in Sep, 1945 age 36], he gave in to his fellow students

request and went to Hong Kong, and with Qi Runhua and Shi Jianhui started the

Chinese Physical Fitness Society on the peninsula, with him carrying the

directorship to this day. On DoubleTenth[Oct 10], 1949 [age 40], he accepted

the position of boxing instructor to the Bleachers and Dyers section of the

Kowloon Weavers Union. At the end of spring, 1950 [age 41], he held the

concurrent position of instructor to the Taiji Boxing class of the Kowloon General

    Chamber of Commerce.

He has many disciples, is a famous author in martial arts circles, and is sincere

about keeping Chinese martial arts genuine. All his disciples now admire the Taiji

formal, aprendendo habilidades do famoso artista do estilo do norte, GuRuzhang.

Long
