As a leader in the pharmaceutical industry, Eli Lilly employs more than 41,000 people worldwide and markets its medicines in 143 countries. This global, research-based company was founded by Colonel Eli Lilly in May 1876 in Indianapolis, Indiana. A 38- year-old pharmacist and a veteran of the US Civil War, Colonel Lilly was frustrated by the poorly prepared, often ineffective medicines of his day. Consequently, he made a commitment to himself and to the public to provide the best quality products, based on latest technology, and professionally administered. Case Study: Remarkably a company with a history of advanced science and medicine like Eli Lilly had one of the oldest and most cumbersome application infrastructures in the industry. When BIA was engaged to rebuild their applications infrastructure and develop leading edge solutions it was touted as the most ambitious IT project in their history. Key business practices need to be modernized and integrated that previously could not be incorporated in their applications suite. Automated manufacturing, warehouse management, automated sales force, CRM, end to end supply chain optimization…these were all best practice solutions that Eli Lilly was unable to leverage until this project. There were so many advantages to be gained from this implementation that their ROI was less than one year. At the same time, Eli Lilly was divesting a division that manufactured home medical devices. As Hyperion was sold, the business had to be carved out of the Eli Lilly infrastructure. Previously the businesses had been tightly integrated and now facilities and personnel were being segregated into two organizations. BIA played a key role in supporting and managing the divestiture as well as the ERP implementation. Through this process, the deep industry knowledge and leading edge IT capabilities BIA brought to play mitigated risk and improved overall delivery.
