HEALTH “TIP” OF THE MONTH
Shingles Vaccine
If you had Chickenpox as a child, and 90% of adults did,
you could get Shingles because the virus stays in your
body. Shingles is a reactivation of the Chickenpox Virus
and it is a greater risk to people over 60 years old
because as you age, your immune system weakens.
A vaccine became available in 2006 which is indicated
for adults 60 and over. This vaccine can prevent
Shingles or reduce its severity and the severe nerve
pain associated with this virus.
Please discuss getting this vaccine with your
physician or your pharmacist. The best
treatment is prevention.
BREAKING OPEN THE WORD
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 13, 2014
First Reading: Isaiah 55:10-11
Just as the rain and snow water the earth and make it
fruitful, so does the word of God bring forth good seed.
Second Reading: Romans 8:18-23
Reminding all that the trials and sufferings of this life
are “as nothing,” Paul says that the glory we shall
receive will overshadow all things.
Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30
Jesus tells the parable of the sower and the seed. The
seed that landed on the footpath, on rocky ground, or
among thorns withered and died; the seed that fell on
good ground – “the man who hears the message and
takes it in”…”bears a yield of a hundred-fold.”
Consider/Reflect:
The familiar parable of the sower in today’s Gospel
reading is usually seen, not incorrectly, as being about
the different ways in which people respond to Jesus’
proclamation of God’s word. But it also is a story about
patience, because the seed that is sown, if it falls on
good soil, takes time to come to fruition; and that time is
a time in which the spouting seeds suffer tribulation,
persecution, anxiety, and worldly cares that threaten to
destroy them. In the time of waiting we must cultivate
patience, that hard thing. But we can be confident that
our patience, as difficult as it may be, is not in vain. We
have faith that we will some day “share in the glorious
freedom of the children of God,” because we trust that
God’s word, which has been scattered abroad, will
achieve the end for which God has sent it.
What difficulties have I seen resolved by patient
waiting? What difficulties have required direct action
on my part in order to resolve them?
In preparation for next weekend’s liturgy, we cite
the following readings:
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 20, 2014
Reading I: Wisdom 12:13, 16-19

Respect Life Corner
The Respect Life Ministry Committee Meets:
the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Faith Formation Center @1:30 PM
Parishes and dioceses around the country are better equipping themselves to help couples who have experienced a miscarriage find comfort in their lives, bringing the message to grieving parents that "the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18)
In a recent article in the National Catholic Register, the following prayer was printed in order to help parents find help and support after suffering such a loss.
PRAYER OF BLESSING AFTER A MISCARRIAGE Compassionate, God soothe the hearts of N. and N. and grant that through the prayers of Mary who grieved by the Cross of her Son, you may enlighten their faith, give hope to their hearts and peace to their lives. Lord, grant mercy to all the members of this family and comfort them with the hope that one day we will all live with you, with your Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.
