nesses were given to thenational police in SaintBarth, the investigationwas turned over to theNorthern Islands nauticalbrigade based in SaintMartin. The New Zealan-der, who presented him-self to the police, hasbeen charged with twothings: “involuntaryhomicide caused by themanifest violation ofsecurity regulationsimposed by the law,” andas for the second victim,“involuntary injuriescausing the temporaryinability to work for lessthan three months causedby the manifest violationof security regulationsand safety as imposed bythe law.” As indicated inhis deposition, the pilotwas driving at an exces-sive speed, wel above thethree knot speed limitimposed for navigation inthe channel.

“Ilove Saint Barth,” says visu-al artist Jeffrey Dread, overcoffee one morning at Maya

To Go. He cuts quite a figure on theisland, zipping around is his blackconvertible Mini Cooper, dreadlocksbouncing in the sun. His love for theisland has translated into a Valen-tine’s gift, an exhibit of his work(February 14-21) at Nikki Beach,entitled “Celebrating Valentine withArtwork inspired by Love, Life andSynergy.” His bright, multi-coloredimages of stars were seen at NikkiBeach in December in an exhibitcalled “Hollywood Icons.” A native of Haiti, Dread moved toNew York in 1987 to study art, andescape the political climate of hiscountry. “I worked as a taxi driver topay for college,” he recalls, and per-haps it was all this driving throughthe streets of the Big Apple thathelped him fall in love with the city. “I liked the skyscrapers and fast paceof life,” he says. He was soon part ofthe scene, living in New York but jet-setting to the Cote D’Azur. St. Barthcouldn’t be far behind, and once hediscovered the island, he considers ithis home away from home. In 1998, Dread co-founded Celebri-tyVibe Entertainment, Inc.; a compa-ny with an extensive digital photo-graph library. Eventually he beganmaking portraits of the manycelebrities he has photographed,

including Michael Jordan, AshleySimpson, Beyonce Knowles, GiorgioArmani, Mariah Carey, Mick Jagger,Paris Hilton, Sophia Loren, and TomCruise. The list of people who havehis work on their walls is equallystar-studded. His artwork can be pur-chased and commissioned at Pho-toVibe Gallery, in South MiamiBeach. His choice of colors is elec-tric and vibrant: “I love Carnival inRio and in Haiti,” he admits, addingthat the colors seen in Carnival cele-brations helped inspire his work. The special valentine’s exhibitincludes paintings based on love, lifeand synergy, such as a large pink

canvas with four white circles andlots of little red hearts, or another ofa large red heart with the words “Ilove you” written in many differentlanguages. Circles and words such as“romance, friendship, bond, and liai-son,” represent the idea of synergybetween two people, as Dreadbelieves in “circles of life” and “cir-cles of love.” If Nikki Beach represents a certaintype of celebrity-induced lifestyle,Dread is part of the picture, withexhibits planned at Nikki Beach loca-tions around the world. “We are allcelebrities in our own rights,” hesays. “We all can make a difference.”

Limited to the windward side ofthe island at the moment,Dauphin Telecom’s service,

Domaccess, launched in Saint Barthin February 2005, will cover theentire island by April, thanks to asecond DSL relay in Lorient. This isthe same date that AMIGO, a GSMmobile phone network launched inSaint Martin in June 2003, will func-tion in Saint Barth, as announced lastThursday by Alain Haillant, founderand director of Dauphin Telecom,during a press conference presentingthe new services of this group basedin Saint Martin. For the moment, the news is limitedto price cuts in terms of ADSL serv-ice. Dauphin Telecom, the onlycompany to offer unlimited down-loads, will have five different offers:from reception at128K with 64K fortransmission at the low price of 19euros, to the service at 1M/256K for59.90 euros. There will also be a“booster” service at 1M/128K forjust 39.90 euros for those whodownload large files regularly. Thecompany has also indicated a con-siderable boost in service once Alca-tel, with the support of the RegionalCouncil, installs the “Guadeloupedigital cable” Guadeloupe and Puer-to Rico via Saint Martin with a spurto Saint Barth.

An uphill battle For many, Dauphin Telecom is a lit-tle like David fighting Goliath: alocal company that has grownthanks to its perseverance andcapacity for innovation. Launchedin July 1998, in Saint Martin byAlain Haillant, who is also the man-ager of Cariburo, the exclusive rep-resentative for Canon in the North-ern Islands, Dauphin Telecom beatthe odds when they were given aGSM license and launched theirfirst small mobile phone network inJune 1999. In June 2003, GSM

AMIGO replaced that first network,once Dauphin was given the greenlight. At the same time, Dauphinlaunched Domaccess, its ADSLservice, beating France Telecomwhose service was available a fewweeks later. Dauphin Telecom alsooffers prepaid Intercard phonecards, claiming 70% of the marketin the Northern Islands. In SaintBarth, Dauphin’s best known serv-ice is “1613,” a prepaid phone serv-ice that offers substantial reductionson long distance communications.

who is better known byher nickname, Douchy(sweetheart in papamien-to), celebrates her 109thbirthday, while IrmiseRosey will have 103 can-dles on her cake nextmonday, February 20.Both centenarians arepensioners at hospital deBruyn (Irmise has livedthere since 1975 andDouchy since 1980),where their lives continuebut are rather restricted.Douchy, who has not spo-ken for quite a long time,also has hearing and sightproblems, but does notrequire any specific med-ical treatment. Her strongconstitution has given herquite an exceptional lifespan. Irmise had her leftleg amputated in 1998,and receives daily treat-ment to increase herblood circulation. She canno longer see, but doesspeak although her wordsare sparse, according toher nephew who wasinterviewed at the time ofhis aunt’s 100th birthday. In spite of her advancedage, Douchy is not theoldest woman Guade-loupe. That honorbelongs Mathilde Albinanée Tafna, who will be111 years old in March16. She was born inLamentin in 1895 and haslived in a geriatric centerin Raizet since 1985.

and Father Batheswere buried in theCatholic Church inGustavia, supposed-ly beneath thestones that markedtheir tombs. But thisturned out to be notexactly true. Work-ers who are current-ly renovating thisreligious structurehave found that thetombs of the twopriests are actuallyelsewhere, onealong the axis fromthe altar to the maindoor, the other tothe left of the altar.It is thought that thestones marking theirtombs were relocat-ed the last time thechurch was renovat-ed in the 1970s. The stone for FatherJean BaptisteBarthes indicatesthat he was born in1793, and that hearrived in SaintBarth in 1833 where he assumed theduties of parish priest. He died in Gus-tavia on April 7, 1836, and was buried atfirst in the cemetery in Saint-Jean beforehe was inhumed in the church during itsfirst major renovation. Built in 1829, thechurch was battered by a hurricane in1837, and as a result underwent renova-tions that stretched until 1843!Abbé Alfred Mahé arrived in SaintBarth in July 1857, and set about sepa-rating the parishes of Lorient and Gus-tavia. The result? From 1857 through1972, when the two parishes were onceagain made into one, there were two

priests officiating in Saint-Barth: one inthe church in Lorient and one in Gus-tavia. But Abbe Mahé did not stay onthe island for long. He passed away atthe age of 33 in Goyave (Guadeloupe)on October 3, 1858, where he wasburied until he was moved on November20, 1859, to the church in Gustavia, withhis sepulture placed in front of the altar. Last Wednesday, the parish council wasto meet and decide if they shouldreplace the stones above the tombs, orleave the stones where they are and/ormake new plaques indicating the pres-ence of the tombs.

Eric Delcroix,who wasrecently named

director of the Aevaobservation networkfor sea turtles in thearchipelago of Guade-loupe, spent last weekwith the staff of themarine park in StBarth. Last Friday, hegave a public lectureentitled “Biology,Ecology, Preservationand Protection of SeaTurtles,” at EspaceMétéo Caraïbes. Thelecture provided achance to discover (orrediscover) the secret life of thesemarine reptiles. Here are a few of themain points discussed:

Seven species worldwideSeven species of sea turtles werecounted worldwide in a recent cen-sus. Of the six varieties found in theAtlantic, five are observed more orless regularly in the archipelago ofGaudeloupe. These include hawkbillturtles, green turtles, leatherback tur-tles, loggerheads, and the most rare,Olive midley. The hawkbill, green,and leatherback species feed andreproduce here while the loggerheadsand “olives” only come to feed, as theloggerheads prefer the waters ofFlorida or Brazil for reproduction,while the “olives” head toward thebeaches of British and FrenchGuyana as well as Surinam.

Reproduction can be difficultThe numbers say it all: out of every1,000 eggs that are laid, only onebecomes an adult turtle. Knowingthat these reptiles are late bloomers interms of sexual maturity (not beforethe age of 25), a female, according toher species, can lay between 400 and800 eggs per season, but she onlylays eggs every other year. The guessis that a female only gives birth to a“viable” turtle once every four years.Reproduction of marine turtles is dif-

ficult and rare, and even if they havesucceeded in existing for many thou-sands of years, it would take very lit-tle for them to disappear completely.

How do they lay eggs?At night, the female leaves the oceanand finds a small, calm beach that cor-responds more to less to the placewhere she was born. Their instinct ishighly developed and according to thespecies, they might cover thousands ofmiles to lay their little eggs in the sameplace they themselves were born. Theritual of egg-laying is always thesame: the female sweeps the sand forabout ten minutes then with her backfeet digs a cylinder about two to threefeet deep, where she places the eggs.She recovers the nest, and two monthslater the babies emerge.

Temperature determined the sex of the turtles

The sex ratio of sea turtles is general-ly one male to three females but thisis actually decided by the temperatureof the water. There are more maleswhere the water is colder, morefemales in warmer water. A tempera-ture near 80 degrees results in anequal number of males and females. Once born, the baby turtles leave thenest and head toward the sea, yet asthey head for the most highly lighted

place, urban lightingnearer and nearer tothe beaches can causethe problem of babiesfound on the roadbehind the beach.Allowing that a babyreaches the water, itswims for four days toreach the open seaswhere it will spend thefirst two years of itslife, during the phasecalled “pelagic.” Later,it returns to the shore-line, where until itreaches sexual maturi-ty, at 25 or 30 years, itgoes back and forth to

the open seas. This is the “juvenilebenthic” period. As an adult, it will beable to reproduce. Coupling takesplace in the ocean, near the placewhere the eggs will be laid. Severalmales may be interested in the samefemale and the process might get a lit-tle violent.

A Look At Sea Turtles

MARIE GALANTE, THE MOST POPULAR SPOTFOR EGGS IN GUADELOUPE

With almost 400 egg “nests” notedevery year, Marie-Galante is by farthe most important spot in thearchipelago. Most are by hawkbills,with about 30 by green turtles.Petite Terre is the second most pop-ular site, and the north coast ofBasse Terre is popular forleatherbacks (50 nests per year),hawkbills and green turtles occa-sionally lay their eggs here as well.With just six nests observed peryear, Saint Barth is far from firstplace in terms of eggs, but that doesnot mean that sea turtles are rarehere. In fact, it is only recently thatturtles laying eggs have beenobserved. Yet due to observationsmade by various diving clubs andthe marine park, it seems as if SaintBarth is primarily a zone where seaturtles come to feed, and that moreand more of them are apparent inthe waters around the island.
