WELCOME: Ending the Year on a HighThe Zygote Festival was certainly one to remember, butartsNK staff have been busy in other areas too.Read about the Zygote legacy with forthcoming aerial skillsdevelopment; the wonderful mosaic creators of Sleaford; thelandscape art commission which will produce a memorablepiece of public art; professional involvement in dance foryoung people, and a photographic insight into the ‘gloriousgame’!Further details about the work of artsNK can be found at:www.artsnk.org

INSIDE OUT: Our Story from Anne Willoughby and Pauline DobsonWhen the idea of a mosaic to grace the front and inside of the newSleaford Leisure Centre was conceived, the obvious way forward con-sisted of two steps: firstly to commission mosaic master, Alan Potter(see Sept/Oct issue), to create the mosaic and the second, to enlistthe help of members of Washingborough Mosaic Group, whose mem-bers not only had years of experience in creating community mosaics, but who have also worked with Alan before. For the Sleaford Leisure Centre Project, Anne Willoughby andMargaret Carter from the Washingborough Group were only too readyto lend a hand. Anne talked to me about the process involved:“Alan begins by designing the mosaic and then laying out the designon boards. Members of the community are then invited to add piecesof the mosaic in order to create the final piece. At the beginning, itcan seem a little strange, because the mosaic has to be created backto front, but it soon starts to take shape.”I asked Anne how members of the Sleaford community responded tothe opportunity to get involved.“I was amazed at how many people came along. There must have

been hundreds, quite a few of them children, who all wanted to take part in this.”As an ex primary school teacher, Pauline Dobson has been used to being hands-on throughout her profession-al life, and, having been extensively involved in the Footprints project, Pauline was keen to participate in thecreation of the mosaic:“It was a wonderful experience! It was so good to have the ladies from the Washingborough MosaicGroup to guide and advise, and I loved seeing members of the public come into the shop where we wereworking and add to the mosaic piece by piece. Sometimes, members of the local community wouldcome in with their own stories of the Leisure Centre and its role in the town and these stories are fasci-nating. In fact it’s given us ideas for other projects which we might be able to undertake!”Pauline confirms that the bug has bitten!“We are now putting our heads together to think about how we might continue to develop the skillswe’ve learned, and contribute further to the creative life of our community here in Sleaford.”Read the full interview at:www.artsnk.org/taking-part/inside-out-our-story-from-anne-willoughby-and-pauline-dobson
