3. Film Screening of Time as Money at The Fredericton Public Library Oct 27

The Students at the School of Social Work at St. Thomas University invite all to a free public screening of Time as Money at the Fredericton

Public Library, located at 12 Carleton St. on Thursday, October 27 from 7 - 9pm.

From small town neighborhoods to cities, the shift in the economy and continued financial struggles are having an adverse effect on communities and creating devastating isolation for its inhabitants. While lying in a hospital bed after a major heart attack, Edgar Cahn, a civil rights lawyer and speechwriter for Robert Kennedy, was feeling helpless – similar to the disenfranchised and unemployed. This experience gave him the idea to create a new system of money as a tool to connect people and neighbors called Time Dollars. Back to top.

Since his release, Fahmy uses his voice to speak on topics such as freedom of expression, militant Islam, terrorism, human ri ghts,

6. Theatre UNB Presents Orwell’s Children Oct 27-29 Just in time for Halloween, Theatre UNB’s first production of the 2016-17 season features a trio of short plays by acclaimed British playwrights Harold Pinter and Caryl Churchill that are sure to inspire chills with their dystopian visions of worlds fallen prey to totalitarianism and teetering on the brink of apocalypse. In Nobel Prize winner Pinter’s Party Time and The New World Order (which evoke comparisons to George Orwell’s 1984), the well-heeled

of the ruling class gather at a cocktail party blithely comparing notes on their country clubs and private islands while outs ide civil unrest is being brutally suppressed in the streets. In Churchill’s Far Away, Joan, a young woman, comes to understand and accept her role as a cog

in the wheel of a repressive state before conditions deteriorate into an apocalyptic and literal world war in which it is no longer possible to know who is fighting whom and the very forces of nature have taken sides against one another in a global conflagration.

Together, the three plays form a timely and incisive commentary on our contemporary world, in which democracy is threatened to descend into authoritarianism in many nations and the politics of fear and division are rife, as written by two of twentieth century theatre’s most astute observers of politics and the dangers and abuse of power. Orwell’s Children is directed by Len Falkenstein, with design and technical direction by Mike Johnston, and features a cast of ten UNB

drama students. Performances will take place at 7:30pm nightly Thursday, October 27 through Saturday, October 29 at Memorial Hall on the UNB campus. All three plays will be performed each night, with a total running time of just over 90 minutes. Tickets ($14 regular, $10 for seniors and the underemployed, and $8 for students) will be available at the door. For more information email [email protected] or phone 447-3078. Back to top.

9. Framing Victory: Salamis, The Athenian Acropolis And The Classical Agora Oct 28 The Archaeological Institute of America New Brunswick Society with support from the Department of History, the Gregg Centre, the Department of Classic and Ancient History at UNB and Aitkens Pewter welcomes the university community to its first lecture of the 2016-2017 AIA Public Lecture Series on Friday, October 28 at 7:30pm at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Our speaker, Professor John Papadopoulos (this year’s AIA Broneer Memorial Lecturer ) from the University of California at Los Angeles –

Cotsen Institute, will present a fascinating lecture entitled: Framing Victory: Salamis, the Athenian Acropolis and the Classical Agora. The famous Athenian general Pericles in the 5th century BC used architecture to create sightlines between monuments and landscape. The

ceremonial gateway to the Acropolis framed the island of Salamis where in 480 BC the most famous naval battle took place against the Persians, and buildings on the Acropolis were closely connected to those in the Athenian Agora, the civic centre of Athens. Dr. Papadopoulos presents new evidence that suggests that Pericles building program was designed to create a ritual topography that

showcased Athenian heroism and triumph. This is a free public event and all are welcome to attend. For more information contact Angela Peters at [email protected]. Back to top.

In the beleaguered former coal town of Cefn Fforest, South Wales, a middle-aged barmaid named Jan Vokes rallies a syndicate of friends to pool their £10 per week towards breeding, raising, and training a racehorse they call Dream Alliance. Unexpectedly, Dream Alliance

shows great promise, and the Welsh townsfolk are soon competing against the sport’s elite. Though their gamble is the furthest thing from a sure bet, and requires years of perseverance through a multitude of factors outside of the stakeholders’ control, for the team

behind Dream Alliance it’s not all about money: in the words of one backer, “Dream took us to places you couldn’t even imagine.”

Osmond elicits warm and funny interviews from the participants, particularly the plucky Vokes, who fondly recalls how she first pulled her

underdog syndicate together back in 2000. Illustrating the team’s anecdotes through carefully chosen archival footage and artful re-enactments – with cinematographer Benjamin Kracun capturing the horses so beautifully you’ll want to reach out and touch them — this

remarkable true story about a long shot is a sure winner.

Sing Street John Carney 105 mins Ireland 2015 English Cast: Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Lucy Boynton

Irish writer-director John Carney refreshed and revitalized the film musical with the Oscar-winning Once and his follow-up Begin Again.

With his new film Sing Street, Carney takes us to 1980s Dublin for a semi-autobiographical tale about a teenager who turns to music to escape his chaotic home life - and, naturally, to impress a girl.

Forced to start over at a rough public school when his parents pull him from private school due to their financial struggles, 14-year- old Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) becomes enamoured of the beautiful and mysterious Raphina (Lucy Boynton). Eager to make an impression, Conor invites Raphina to star in his band’s music video - despite the fact that he has not yet formed a band, or even written any music. With the guidance of his drop-out older brother, Conor restyles himself as “Cosmo,” recruits some enthusiastic but musically untrained schoolmates, and sets out to make a band from scratch by studying and emulating the New Wave stars of the era like A-ha, Duran Duran,

and Spandau Ballet. Soon, the ragtag group is shooting music videos on a less-than-shoestring budget and looking to wow their fellow students at the upcoming school ball - and meanwhile, Cosmo starts making progress in his quest to win Raphina’s heart.

Featuring a stellar soundtrack that mixes nostalgic hits and original music, Sing Street combines the scrappy energy of 2013 Film Circuit favourite We Are the Best! with the sweetness and charm of a coming-of- age love story. As with the director’s previous hits, Carney’s latest is sure to have audiences cheering and singing along once again.

This year, 30 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $7/film, but a yearly film society membership reduces admission cost to $4/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night. For

31. Souterrain Impressions Exhibition at The UNB Art Centre Nov 4 –Jan 27

The UNB Art Centre marks the upcoming 150th anniversary of Canada with an exhibit and series of events that commemorate the centennial of Vimy Ridge. The exhibit Souterrain Impressions opens Friday, November 4 at 1pm and honours an event that is considered to be one of Canada’s defining moments in history.

The Souterrain Impressions is a travelling exhibition organized by the CANADIGM Group, a not-for-profit group of historians dedicated to understanding Canada’s role in the First and Second World Wars. Using a 3D scanner, they have duplicated the tunnel carvings to bring a

selection of over 200 of them to the surface. In addition to these images, CANADIGM has provided an interactive multi-media kiosk that gives members of the public access to the research conducted into the names and service records of the men posted there. Visitors will be able to trace their own family connections and honour the memories of those who have died in service to their country. The exhibit is generously supported by Veterans Affairs Canada through their Community Engagement Partnership Fund. The Souterrain Impressions will be on display at the UNB Art Centre from November 4, 2016 – January 27, 2017.

As part of this special exhibit, the UNB Art Centre will also be using the lobby of Memorial Hall to display UNB’s First Worl d War Honour Roll, featuring the photos and biographies of 32 UNB students who sacrificed their lives in the Great War. These will be supported by

displays of memorabilia collected by UNB’s Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society, and the Fredericton Regional Museum. The UNB Art Centre is also pleased to display 13 banners from the Gregg Centre’s Toll of War project depicting the Victoria Cross recipients from

each province and territory. The banners have been flown in all of Canada’s provincial capitals throughout the year. This project was sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Along with these displays the UNB Art Centre is pleased to partner with the Gregg Centre and the Centre for Musical Arts to provide a number of commemorative and educational events throughout the run of the exhibition. 33. Changing the Conversation about Aging at STU Forest Hill Complex Nov 5

St. Thomas University, the Atlantic Institute on Aging, and Greater Fredericton Social Innovation have jointly organized A Day For The Ages.

How do we change the conversation on aging? Everyone is welcome to come and focus on later life as a time, not one of dependence and decline, but of development, discovery, and giving back, highlighting the social wealth boomers and seniors represent in our community.

This exciting one-day event, A Day for the Ages, will bring together people of all ages, from their 20s to their 90s, and focus on the positive impact of an aging population. The aim is to come up with concrete, practical ways in which we can change the conversation about

“aging” from a public deficit to what it truly is: a public strength. To help New Brunswick be the province that gets aging “right”, it takes a larger and more open conversation. A Day for the Ages is that conversation.

Please join our open space forum on Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 10am to 4pm at STU Forest Hill Complex. The cost is $25, lunch included. Register early, as space is limited. For more information contact [email protected] or visit

Matt Epp is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He has released a total of 9 albums to date and collaborated with artists like Eliza Gilkyson, Rose Cousins, Serena Ryder, and Amelia Curran, among others. Matt is one of this country's best live acts and is a

rare performer with the ability to take you into his world and make you feel in an instant like a true friend. Matt's genre has evolved over the years from a country, melancholy singer/songwriter vibe to an upbeat pop music that has elements of rock.

Matt's song "When You Know" has been in the top 5 of the CBC Radio 2 Top 20 for 12 weeks straight. The song is a gorgeous duet with Serena Ryder, which helped her win a JUNO. He has also done a co-write and duet with New Brunswick's own Jessica Rhaye, "Time Will Only Heal Your Broken Heart", which appears on her latest album, just released this fall.

In the past few years Matt has done most of his touring in Europe, largely in Germany and Spain but many other countries incl uding Denmark, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, France, and Croatia. 42. Buy a Beautiful Calendar and Support the Restoration of the Stained Glass at Memorial Hall

Buy a beautiful calendar and support the stained glass restoration project at UNB! One of the distinguishing features of UNB’s Memorial Hall is the stained glass windows that grace the auditorium. As part of a fundraising campaign spearheaded by the UNB Art Centre to

conserve and stabilize the stained glass windows, the UNB Art Centre has created a 16-month, 2016-2017 calendar. These calendars, which feature details of the windows, are on sale for $15, the proceeds from which support the stained glass restoration fund. Calendars can be purchased at the UNB Art Centre, or at various other locations on campus and in the community.

Each of the windows in Memorial Hall is dedicated to an important member of the university community and features family crests and personal insignia, as well as images drawn from poetry, history, and science. Our calendar campaign allows you to bring these beautiful works of art into your own home. Over time these windows have become unstable due to the settling of the building and general

deterioration from exposure to the elements. More importantly, the effect of the intense sunshine on these windows has caused a dramatic change in their condition. Your support will help preserve the windows to be enjoyed by members of the UNB community for

generations to come!

These windows, as well as all of the stained glass windows existing on campus, are part of the UNB Permanent Collection. As part of the

collection, the preservation and safekeeping of these windows is the responsibility of the UNB Art Centre. The University of New Brunswick recognizes the significance of these beautiful historic windows, and over the next couple of years, will ensure the preservation of these extraordinary works of art. The UNB Art Centre is seeking funding through provincial and federal heritage project funding channels. For more information about making a donation, contact Marie Maltais at [email protected].

For more information, contact the UNB Art Centre at (506) 453-4623.
