EDITOR’SNOTEam faced with the inevitable, along with many other parents I know: my youngest child and actor-kid is going off to college to major in the theatre arts. My daughter has been out of the house for a few years now, but come this August I will belong to a group called the “empty-nesters”. I pray that I will accept this new transition with grace.

I remember rushing around here and there to get him to his rehearsals, voice lessons and auditions on time. A little hectic, I’ll admit, but I enjoyed watching the fun he was having and the life-long friends he was making. It was all good.

Even though I knew this was my son’s dream all along, there was a little part of me that thought maybe he would choose a path that would guarantee a job with a steady income. . . trying to be practical, of course. But when he was sitting down and filling out applications for college, I found myself realizing that he has to follow his dreams to be happy, as we all must do.

Thank goodness there are those who do follow their creative dreams . . . and that is what arts&expressions® MAGAZINE is all about!

Our featured artisan is Martha Young McQuilkin. She is a renowned illustrator, three-dimensional fiber artist, author and an art educator. Beginning

on page 13, you will see the world she has created with her fantasy beings called “Whimbles”. Martha will be signing her books at our event on June 13 at the Dogwood Gallery and Framer in Tyrone.

Michael Buchanan and Diane Lang will also be at our event to sign their new book The Fat Boy Chronicles. Read more about this book on page 29.

As always, we have a huge number of events happening throughout the Southern Arc this summer. We hope you enjoy this issue and wish you a safe, wonderful and creative season!

“Martha Young McQuilkin has earned her BA and MVA and is a professional

illustrator, fiber artist, art educator and storyteller. Visit her studio and you will soon discover she has fashioned a world of colorful, mythological fantasy beings named Whimbles, and speaks of them as if they are alive and have a story to tell. Featured in Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion, Doll Magazine, London, Where Women Create, and Romantic Homes Magazine, Martha is well-known and admired for her talent.

VISIT THE GALLERY The Gallery is alive with Martha’s magical mythological characters based upon her fairytale trilogy for adults: “The Legend of the Land of Caelumen”: Part I (2005) Part II (2008); Part III (2009). Complementary products include fiber sculpture, ceramic figures, decorative accessories and stationery.

APPLIQUED WORK Martha’s work may begin with a silk linen construction or may be applied to an antique and/or dyed fabric. As with the fiber sculpture pieces, more sumptuous fabric is added along with multitudinous embellishments to weave a unique and expressive story.

FIBER SCULPTURE These figures, sewn from silk linen, are covered with many antique and dyed fabrics which are then embellished with beads, buttons, feathers, dyed yarns, shells and ribbons. Each face is drawn first with colored pencil and/or painted with gouache and gesso It is hoped that the care and many vintage treasures used to create these pieces will instill them with a magical spirit which may touch all who see them. Ceramic contributions are by Brenda Miller, Atlanta.

TEACHING STUDIO Creator of the Whimbles and their miniature Land of Caelumen, Martha is also an experienced, well-known art educator who delights in individualized student instruction and multimedia projects. This children’s art program has three sessions: Fall; Winter/Spring; Summer.

1. Bring Out the NostalgiaI see knitting as a way of connecting with

familial and cultural histories. Although the

fiber trail continues back centuries, think of

your grandmother’s grandmother or another

relative on the family tree. Chances are high

that somewhere in your family legacy someone

has knitted something. Your ancestors didn’t

have films or computers, but on afternoons

alone or during heart-to-heart conversations,

they had their knitting. Despite the distraction

of technology, knitting holds you both together.

When this quietness resonates, it is one of my

favorite things. It connects me to my ancestors in

a way few activities can.

2. Make it GlobalNow widen that familial coziness. What you and

Aunt Glynis had in common, you also have in

common with women worldwide, since almost

the beginning of time. You’ve all excitedly started

new projects, sighed at dropped stitches, thrown

your knitting down in frustration, and when

finished thought, “I made that.” Sometimes when

I watch the news the world seems so vast it’s

overwhelming–it’s easy to feel disconnected with

people living lives that are so different. But when

I come back to my knitting and think about the

women past and present knitting along with me,

I’m reminded that the world is full of individuals,

not statistics.

3. Product vs. ProcessChances are likely that somewhere in your

closet, you have at least one handmade garment.

The love stitched into the garment stays with it

long after it has left the maker’s hands. Think

about how that wool sweater kept you warm last

winter or how great that nap was with that hand

knitted afghan. That handmade item retained

love, provided comfort, and was created just for

you. Just as an item can be made with love, it can

also be infused with it.

4. Share Your ProductThink of individuals who would welcome a

handmade hat or dishcloth or blanket; soldiers

far from home; dogs in animal shelters; newborn

babies. There is always someone who could

benefit from your knitting. There are children

in hospitals who could find solace in snuggling

with a knitted blanket and battered women who

don’t think they deserve something beautiful like

a handmade scarf. Whether you’re donating to

individuals down the street or across the globe,

you’re doing more than just showing off your

skills, you’re knitting for good.

To learn more visit http://www.craftivism.com.

The book is available online (Amazon, Barnes

& Noble, Powell’s, etc.) and is being carried by

some bookstore chains and independents.

At the Georgia Shrimp Company, some of Atlanta’s finest musicians grace the stage in

the newly expanded dining room—and the buzz is going around about their ‘Live Jazz’ evenings. The ‘Live Jazz’ draws crowds on Sunday, Monday and Thursday evenings with Tuesday featuring an ‘All American Jam Session.’ Now with twice as much room to serve customers, you can reserve a table at The Shrimp where they boast expertly prepared seafood that’s as fresh and delicious as ever. Owner/operators Ant and Dee Murphy, along with Head Chef and General Manager Sean Baur, lead a team of professionals who serve spectacular dishes to seafood lovers with Georgia Shrimp Company’s signature succulent fresh fish accented with unique fresh flavored sauces. “It’s rare a book comes along that speaks to teens in their own words,” says

Disney screenwriter Michael Lucker about The Fat Boy Chronicles. Inspired by a true story and told through the journal entries of ninth grader Jimmy Winterpock, the novel reveals to students, teachers, and parents a young man who daily confronts life as an awkward and lonely teenager.

Jimmy’s journey begins on his first day in a new school. Because of his excessive weight, he becomes a target for the hurtful taunts of his classmates. For Jimmy, the journal project assigned by his English teacher becomes an outlet for his concerns, joys, and cries for acceptance.

When he visits his doctor and is told that he must confront his obesity or face a lifetime of physical and emotional problems, Jimmy begins his transformation. His efforts to improve his life sharply contrast with the lives around him, namely his friend Paul, who must deal with an abusive father, and Jimmy’s tormentor Nate, who struggles with self-esteem by lashing out at classmates. The Fat Boy Chronicles is not only Jimmy’s story but also the story of those who befriend him, those who betray him, and those who learn to respect him.

The Fat Boy Chronicles moved NY Times bestselling author Melinda Long (How I Became a Pirate) to say, “I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book. Jimmy Winterpock’s honest,

straightforward journal entries make for a revealing, yet entertaining read. Lang Buchanan has truly captured what it is like to be an overweight teenager fighting for self-image and a place in the brutal high school world. Jimmy is an amazing hero.”

Obesity has become the White Elephant pervading our nation. To control the epidemic, health and medical professionals are investing time and research while they call for more community involvement. Endorsed by renowned teen obesity experts Dr. Thomas Inge of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Dr. Mark Wulkan of Emory University Hospital, the novel will raise awareness of the emotional and physical problems created by this disease.

Authors Diane Lang and Michael Buchanan have used their experience as high school teachers to write The Fat Boy Chronicles. Their ability to communicate to students is evident in being named Teachers of the Year, nominated for Disney Teacher Awards, and by being featured in USA Today for creativity in the classroom.

The Fat Boy Chronicles is published through Tin Roof Films, a family entertainment company located in Alpharetta. The novel is available in bookstores and online. For more information about the book, the authors, or the obesity epidemic, please visit www.TheFatBoyChronicles.com

Art, music, shopping, entertainment and much more will be embodied in the new and upcoming entertainment district, Olde Town Morrow, located directly off

of I-75. The Morrow Downtown Development Authority has answered our citizens’ demands for a downtown area by creating this new district. Olde Town Morrow has endless possibilities for those seeking to expose their talents to the community. The district consists of five historic homes that were relocated to the City, from various parts of Georgia, in order to establish an authentic historic downtown for visitors. These homes will hold future restaurants, galleries, boutiques, and other unique shops. Another feature is the $1.7 million bridge that was built as an entrance to sixteen shops that will wrap around the district, adding a flare of character. Olde Town Morrow will be a place with an ambiance that caters to all. After the shops close and merchants retire to their homes, the district will remain a playground for wanderers to enjoy sipping a glass of wine, reading a book on a bench in the district square, or watching children play in the fountain–a main attraction of the district. Olde Town Morrow is sure to provide an atmosphere suitable for all ages

and entertainment day or night.

For further information about the district and leasing opportunities please contact Jessica Kilby at 678-833-2584 or [email protected]

a&eKIDS ~ CULTURAL ARTS WEEK

By Jacqueline M. Arnold

Permeating the halls of Peeples Elementary School in Peachtree City, GA, you may hear the wispy sounds of bagpipes, see

Irish dancers clogging to Celtic music, or see a Ninja walking stealthily in a traditional martial arts uniform. This doesn’t sound like a typical elementary school environment, but this is exactly what students experience during the Cultural Arts Week from May 18 – 22. Started by Becky Massave six years ago, at the end of each school year the Peeples Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) sponsors an entire week of Cultural Arts for students, kindergarten through fifth grades. Funded through PTO fundraisers and a parent/direct donation drive, the PTO organization supports this week-long celebration of the arts. It is both an educational and entertaining way for every student to benefit from the PTO’s efforts. Students are exposed to the arts through smaller events during the year, such as art instruction in resource offerings, but Cultural Arts Week allows the students an opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of arts, artists, and media, including live performances and interactive sessions with professional community artists. “Cultural Arts Week is a unique opportunity for our children,” says PTO Committee Chairperson, Leena Stark. “This week serves many purposes including developing our children into creative thinkers.” Nearly four-dozen artists and performers

volunteer their time and talent to entertain and educate close to 800 students about the world of arts during normal school hours. Artists and performers are set up from the commons area to the gymnasium, and students have six opportunities per day to spend time with them. Artists involved are musicians, including a bagpiper and an acoustic guitarist, Irish folk dancers, Native American performers representing three tribes, tap dancing duos, handcrafted jewelry makers, origami artists, potters, an eco-artist, and various other performing artists. Students also have an opportunity to handle instruments, learn music theory and performance techniques, such as the stage bow, and listen to a Suzuki method violin instructor. “We try to put something interactive in each performance,” says Stark, “and make it a rich experience for each student.” This year, Felt artist Helena Marette, formerly featured on HGTV, creates a unique felt art piece with the student’s individual creations, which afterwards is kept in a display case at the school. Additional programs include presentations and performances from: baseball author and 5th grade parent Nick Garcia; a local storyteller sharing regional stories; highlights of the Solomon Islands from a Peace Corps experience, as well as other information on the cultures of Scotland, Cuba, Greece, Japan, Finland, and Peru.

A Formula for Business Successin Economic Adversity

THE ART OF BUSINESS

There is only one group of business owners that don’t have problems…and they are all dead. Problems or challenges are a sign of

life. So, the more problems you have the more alive you are.

“Our greatest glory is not found in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” -Confucius

Creative owners have advantages that help them achieve their goals. They are unwilling to let challenges get them down. They find new ways to enrich their customer’s experiences, and they seek the help they need to become better. When you’re ready to tap into your creative advantage, follow the 4 step formula:

1. Work to be a better version of yourself. You are able to create beauty even with a weak foundation if you have an attitude of constructive creativity. The marble Michelangelo was given to create “David” was substandard and he worked with it, anyway. What in your life has both a weak foundation and seems to be calling you to create something with it?

2. Do the actions successful business owners are doing. Many business owners try to cut costs by cutting corners on customer service. This is exactly the wrong thing to do. Here’s why: When people buy during an economic downturn they are extremely conscious of the “hard earned” money that they spend. Customers want more attention, appreciation and recognition for their purchases, not less. In tough times, giving great service enhances the customer’s shopping experience, and boosts your own business’ image.

3. Have the commitment to be congruent between self, creativity and business operations. Challenges are not positive or negative they just “are.” They are simple happenings. It is how you choose to see it, and what you do with it. Creative owners use the opportunity to get a clearer vision of where you may need attitude adjustments, improved thinking, or better skills.

Why not make a list of all of your challenges and, ask yourself a few questions, such as:

o Is there anything I can do about this - now or later?

o What would my hero, mentor or someone I respect do about this?

o Is this a recurring situation in my life?

o Why?

o Is there someone who can help me?

4. Have a coach/ mentor/ teacher to help you. Every great performer and artist has someone to help them become their very best. Do you?

lifestyle you deserve, call me at 770.252.2656
