Autumn at-a-glance ArtNational Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS)The aim of NADFAS is the cultivation, appreciation and study of the decorative and fine arts and the giving of aid to the preservation of our national heritage. We cover the full spectrum - old masters and modern art; silverwork and jewellery; sculpture; glass; ceramics; architecture; textiles and furniture, together with broader themes such as art movements, cities and individual collections. All lecturers are of the highest calibre and experts in their field.

ArtUsing a variety of illustrations it sheds a forgotten light on how important textiles have been in European history, but more than this, the history of textiles is not just a matter of fashion but is also a story of politics, money, war, trade, laws, the church, agriculture, exploration, science and even serendipity.

Hic abundant leones: Medieval and Early Modern MapsDr Bill ShannonBill Shannon’s title is taken from an Anglo-Saxon world map of ca: 1050 exposition of how maps were created and designed. He will look at the use of colour, heraldry, strap work and other decorative devices from compass roses to sea monsters and historical portraits. But maps have always had significance beyond their practical purpose: they were proudly displayed to portray an image of culture and knowledge of the wider world as in the case of Henry VIII; and later on, why did a wall mounted county map become the latest fashionable accessory of the country squire?

The History of Windsor Castle and its Royal Occupants 080 – 2002Oliver EverettWindsor Castle is the oldest and largest continuously occupied castle in the world. It has been enlarged and modified throughout its 900 year history to reflect the needs, ambitions and styles of various monarchs. As such the castle has evolved from an impregnable fortress into a royal country residence as well as being the Queen’s favourite home, is regularly used by her for spectacular state occasions.

The lecture shows how today castle is has grown from it 11th century origins and how this evolution relates to the personalities and tastes of its Royal occupants and to the history of Britain. Four monarchs in particular are shown to have made Windsor Castle what it is today – Edward III, Charles II, George IV and the present Queen.

MusicQueen Elizabeth School presentsFestival Concert Series

This informal concert series provides QES musicians with the opportunity to perform in an informal environment in front a supportive and friendly audience.

Each instrument or family of instruments is featured across the academic year and a wide range of music is performed. Beginners perform short pieces and have the opportunity to listen to those with more experience playing more complex music. Some of the concerts feature ensembles as well as soloists.

Highlights Rural Touring Scheme presentsDjangologie

Djangologie generate the sound, excitement and spirit of Hot Club jazz, bringing a freshness to the style whilst preserving their own unique identity. The evening will feature a mix of exquisitely written and much loved tunes from the Thirties alongside their growing repertoire of excellent originals and music from their most recent CD A New Leaf which launched to sell-out audiences at The Sage, Gateshead, last year.

Djangologie are James Birkett (Guitar), Giles Strong (Guitar), Emma Fiske (Violin) and Mick Shoulder (Double Bass). James and Giles combine immense versatility with a profound love and understanding of the history of jazz guitar. Emma takes the swing of Stéphane Grappelli but also imbues it with traces of her other musical passions – classical and bluegrass. Founder member and composer Mick anchors the group with a big bass sound and a driving rhythmic pulse.

MusicBoyan Choir of the UkraineOn the musical menu: A compelling programme in which the first half illuminates the spiritual drama and splendor of the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Rachmaninov’s Nunc Dimittis is a highlight, while in the second, songs of joy, humour and nostalgia convey the exceedingly rich folk culture of Ukraine. This year’s surprise element is a short tribute to the Verdi bicentenary with three well-known works: the beautiful and spiritually moving soprano aria, La Vergine degli angeli (Act 2 Force of Destiny); the stirring Anvil Chorus (Act 2 Il Trovatore); and the sparkling Brindisi duet, (Act 1 La Traviata).

The Berkeley EnsembleA welcome return of the Berkeley Ensemble to Queen Elizabeth School. The ensemble will be working with pupils and will perform at this intimate concert. Fast-rising stars and champions of British music, the Berkeley Ensemble take their name from two British composers of the last hundred years, father and son Sir Lennox and Michael Berkeley. Formed in 2008 by members of Britain’s young professional orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia, they are quickly establishing themselves as one of the UK’s most dynamic young chamber groups and enjoy a busy concert schedule, performing in the UK and abroad.

Theatre ArtsQueen Elizabeth School presentsThe Curious Dance Company inAlice through the Looking GlassWritten and directed by Jasper Marriott, composition by Jen Hartley

Alice is not happy. Banished to her room whilst her mother and sister host a “not for children” party, Alice feels the world is against her - until she enters a new world, through her looking glass. Here she is grown-up enough to cope all by herself, thank you very much.

She meets surreal characters, makes new friends and even defeats the fearsome Jabberwock. But all too soon her new world turns on her and Alice feels she is now in real danger. Thankfully, the curiously familiar Red and White Queens come to her assistance, helping her to complete her journey and to become Queen Alice.

This magical and emotive tale is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s story Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Saw There. Set to an original musical score and told through sparklingly inventive choreography, Alice through the Looking Glass will delight all ages and touch all hearts.

Queen Elizabeth School presentsMacbeth

Theatre Arts presents Shakespeare’s Macbeth as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival. With a strong cast from Years 9 to 11, an abridged version of the play will be performed both at QES and also at The Duke’s, Lancaster.

ReviewsKirkby Lonsdale Arts Festival 203This year’s arts festival took place in June and involved people of all ages in a variety of events. The theme this year was Miniature Worlds with children from the local primary schools enjoying arts, crafts and tiny stories in St Mary’s Church story tent. The theme continued with postcard poems – children wrote a short story or poem based on a series of pictures from the Highlights Craft Tour and the winners were read out on Indigo 106.6fm – South Lakes first Community Radio station. There were art exhibitions in Queen Elizabeth School, Underley Garden School, Kirkby Lonsdale Library and Platos. Encore Opera raised the roof with another thrilling concert and there were drama and dance performances throughout the week. The Highlights Contemporary Craft Tour came to St Mary’s Church with artist Serena Partridge (left) working with local schools and meeting local people, the tour proved to be very popular with visitors especially children. The annual Brass Band Contest was held in the market square and proved to be another popular attraction. Haraald Haugaard ReviewI thought that the Haraald Haugaard evening was a pleasurable and enjoyable event to watch. As I am in the QES Folk Group, I listen and play a lot of folk music from England, France and Sweden but I have never encountered Danish music before. The band played well and their music was inspiring and in the future, in the Folk Group, we might even try this new style which I am looking forward to. Overall the evening was fantastic!

Queen Elizabeth School Summer SchoolThe Summer school took place in the holidays for Year 6 children with a variety of great sessions including Art (left), Science, Maths, English, PE, Arts Award and Design & Technology. The children had a great time and got to know each other ready for the new term. They had an exclusive tour, a talk about the history of the buildings and a chance to try the school dinners before everyone else in Year 7.

Poetry Postcard PoemsChildren from Year 7 and from local Primary schools entered a competition to write a short story or poem on the theme Miniature Worlds Here are some of the winners:

GrantsPaul Pfeuti Young Musician TrustPaul Pfeuti was an inspirational and gifted musician. Paul took his first teaching position in 1967 when he became music master at Douglas High School on the Isle of Man. In the early 1980s Paul moved back to his native north west to Bentham Grammar School and after several unsuccessful attempts at retirement joined Queen Elizabeth School’s visiting music staff, teaching piano since 1996.

Paul died suddenly in the week after Christmas 2008. His family decided his legacy should befit his lifelong passion and created the Paul Pfeuti Young Musicians’ Trust to enable children to access music and further development of it where finances may not always permit. Paul’s wife, daughter and the rest of his family remain closely involved with fundraising for the trust and deciding how funds are allocated.

The Trust have awarded over £5000 to local young people to help with the cost of exam fees, travel expenses to auditions and purchasing new instruments. To apply – please print an application form from www.queenelizabeth.cumbria.co.uk and click on the Arts section or telephone Helen Baines on 015242 71275
