We are delighted to launch our brand new summer season of events at Wells Maltings, hand-picked just for you.

After a busy and varied spring season, the summer won’t disappoint. Drama, classical music, folk, new film releases and classic movies, activities for children and families, local bands and shantymen – and a celebrity name or two – all vying for your attention.

My recommendations this season? It’s all well worth seeing, of course, but don’t miss the second SEA FEVER LITERARY FESTIVAL in May: three days of events, readings and discussions with top writers and poets; and the MUSIC-NEXT-THE-SEA classical series at the end of June: turn the pages to find out more.

Check out the next two recitals in our residency with THE VILLIERS QUARTET and we are also especially pleased to welcome the internationally-renowned pianist BOBBY CHEN and rising star oboist AMY ROBERTS.

There’s some great new drama too, in the form of the return of Baroque Theatre and their production of Ariel Dorfman’s thriller DEATH AND THE MAIDEN, and the stunning Zanetti Productions from New Zealand with their thought-provoking and powerful, award-winning THE BASEMENT TAPES. Zimbabwean actor and

musician ANNA MUDEKA also joins us in June with her exploration of migration, told through a personal journey via Zimbabwe, London and Norfolk in KURE KURE/FARAWAY.

Plus there’s plenty for children and families. From a host of family-friendly films to all sorts of Easter and May half-term activities, as well as the return of those dazzling, dashing magicians MORGAN & WEST at the end of August.

Your seats await you!

Simon DaykinDirector

Ps. Turn the page to see pictures of the Wells Community Tapestry, now in situ at Wells Maltings. There’s an accompanying booklet about this too, so read all about it when you’re in the building next.

North Norfolk’s leading law firm

ANDREW MOTION, JULIAN BLACKBURN, ROGER LAW

AND KEVIN CROSSLEY-HOLLAND TO HEADLINE

SEA FEVER 2

Following the success of the first SEA FEVER festival in May 2018, we’re

delighted to announce the full line-up of speakers for SEA FEVER 2.

This exciting line-up of poetry and prose will be held from Friday 10th

to Sunday 12th May at Wells Maltings and bookings can be made for

individual events, passes purchased for individual days or, indeed, for the

duration of the three-day event. A dedicated Sea Fever Festival brochure

is available (pop into Wells Maltings soon for your copy) and you can also

find more details of each of the events online: www.wellsmaltings.org.uk

Tickets and passes can also be bought online or in person or by

calling the Box Office on 01328 710885.

SEA FEVER, North Norfolk’s Festival of Poetry and Prose, is the successor to the long-established Poetry-next-

the-Sea. This year’s festival, to be held on the 10th, 11th and 12th May,

will be staged in the main complex of the Maltings. It sees the return of

the festival to where it was founded in 1997, albeit to a venue transformed into a state-of-the-art 21st century

arts centre.

It is a huge privilege to be able to welcome back to the festival Sir Andrew Motion, who last came

to Wells in the days when he was Poet Laureate. Other poets to give

readings include Sally Festing, Elaine Stewart and Rebecca Watts, as well

as Norfolk’s own Kevin Crossley-Holland, one of the founders of

PNTS. We are thrilled that he will be launching at the festival his new

collaboration with photographer Andy Rafferty: This is Seahenge: A Journey.

Equally exciting is the presence of long-standing Wells resident

Roger Law, whose recent work as a

ceramicist is every bit as dazzling as the Spitting Image puppets that made

his name.

“We hope that this festival will reflect the very special nature of this strip

between the land and the sea,” says festival co-director Jim Ring.  In this

vein, Francis Pryor, celebrated author, Lincolnshire sheep-farmer and

archaeologist will be reflecting on the special forces that created the East

Anglia landscape.

Julia Blackburn, whose new work Time Song: Searching for Doggerland is being so wonderfully reviewed, will

talk about the long-vanished land beneath the North Sea.

Sea Fever’s patron – the poet,

biographer and publisher Matthew Hollis - has agreed to present both a

musical collaboration with Richard Scott, and some of his new work on

The Wasteland.

Finally, we have persuaded the composer and film-maker Tony

Britten to discuss Night Mail, the iconic film with music by Benjamin

Britten and words by WH Auden – sadly long gone - both of whom

attended Gresham’s in Holt.

Tickets for Sea Fever are now on sale. In person via the Visitor

Information Centre at Wells Maltings, by phone on: 01328 710885 and online

at: www.wellsmaltings.org.uk

Full details of the programme and the

speakers are also available on the Sea

Fever website at: www.seafeverliteraryfestival.com
