03 THEATRE

Spendid Theatre presents Everyman4 January 7.00pm // £10 // £8.50 Concessions Uppingham TheatreEveryman is the most famous of the great English morality plays, devised for and by ordinary people, performed in the street or public buildings, and carrying a simple message about living a moral life.Everyman is minding his own business when he has an unexpected visit from Death. God needs someone to account for the sinfulness and immorality he sees in the world, and Everyman must embark on a spiritual journey to cleanse his soul. Will he be able to rid himself of his earthly baggage, or is he just too human?Splendid blend the medieval with the modern, smudging the black and white moral certainty of 16th century England with the multi-coloured contemporary swirl. Using early theatrical traditions and Commedia characterisation, they will investigate the very nature of humanity. What does it mean to be ‘good’?www.wegottickets.com 01572 823961 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

04 THEATRE

The Caucasian Chalk Circle5 - 7 March 7.45pm // £5 Queen Elizabeth Theatre, OakhamA story of love, compassion and belonging.Bertolt Brecht’s politically-charged morality masterpiece, inspired by the story of King Solomon and the child claimed by two mothers, charts the desperate journey of Grusha Vachnadze as she strives to protect baby Michael from the enemy. Presented as ensemble theatre, with forceful narration and physical storytelling, this visually captivating production packs a powerful message. [email protected] www.wegottickets.com 01572 758820

The Importance of Being Earnest23 - 25 January 7.30pm // £15 // £12.50 Concessions // £9.50 School Group Uppingham TheatreWhat Oscar Wilde called his ‘trivial play for serious people’ must be the most enduring and delightful of English comedies. The dedicatedly silly Algernon loves Gwendolen, Bunburying and muffins: Jack searches haplessly for love (and his own name), the Reverend Chasuble pursues the smouldering Miss Prism, and looming over them all is one of the most unfeasible characters of English theatre, Lady Augusta Bracknell. A plot of fiendish cleverness and endless improbable coincidence is guaranteed to have you bamboozled if you don’t know it, to surprise you once again if you do, and keep you laughing all night either way. An evening of sheer delight and immortal wit.Adding to the ambience there will be music by musicians of Uppingham School, and cucumber sandwiches…www.wegottickets.com 01572 823961 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

Talking Heads by Alan Bennett 18 - 21 March 8.00pm Mon/Tue // 7.00pm Wed/Thur // £5 Queen Elizabeth Theatre, OakhamTalking Heads is a collection of twelve masterful monologues, in which Bennett displays the wry observation, knowing irony and tender understatement that have ensured his rightful place at the forefront of contemporary writing. The Drama Scholars present six of these darkly comic, tragically poignant and wonderfully uplifting monologues. [email protected] www.wegottickets.com 01572 758820

05 THEATRE

The Last Five Years 20 - 21 March 7.45pm // £5 // Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Oakham “Some people freeze for fear that they’ll fail, but I keep rolling along”This emotionally powerful, intimate musical tells the tale of New Yorkers Cathy and Jamie as they fall in and out of love. It’s an intensely personal look at the relationship between a writer and an actress, told from both points of view. Cathy tells her story backwards while Jamie tells his chronologically. The two meet on stage just once - as their timelines intersect - at their wedding. [email protected] www.wegottickets.com 01572 758820

06 THEATRE

Blackeye Theatre present Teechers by John Godber10 May 7.30pm // £13 // £11 Concessions // £9.50 School Groups Uppingham TheatreFast-moving, inventive and highly entertaining, Teechers is a brilliant take on life at a modern Comprehensive. Through their hilarious end of term play three fifth-formers sketch the new drama teacher’s progress through two terms of uncooperative classes, cynical colleagues and obstructive caretakers. Disillusioned, he departs for the safe waters of a public school, and leaves behind his students, whose youthful irreverence gives way to despair. High energy, break-neck comedy and Blackeye Theatre’s trademark ensemble style will make this modern classic an evening of sheer joy.“There is only one fitting description of Teechers….a winner.” Daily Telegraph.“Highly original.” Daily Mail.“Loud, cheerful, and pointedly political.” Times.www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

Acorn Antiques23 - 25 May 7.30pm // £7.50 // Free admission Saturday Uppingham TheatreVictoria Woods’ hilarious 1980s sitcom based in a tiny antique shop on the outskirts of Manchesterford, was originally a satire of TV soap operas like Crossroads and Eastenders, and transfers brilliantly to the stage. You will howl with laughter at the ridiculous antics of elderly Mrs Overall, who believes every problem is best solved by a nice cup of tea; lovelorn and panic-stricken Miss Babs; reliably boring Clifford; Derek the handyman, villainous Cousin Jerez, and the rest of the eccentric cast. Acorn Antiques staggers from disaster to disaster, a new plot twist at every turn, while Babs and Mrs Overall preside over the mayhem. Junior Uppingham School pupils are directed in this irrepressible comedy by Director of Drama Clare Gwenin.www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

George Orwell’s 1984 Adapted by Matthew Dunster3 May 7.30pm // £13 // £11 Concessions // £9.50 School Groups Uppingham TheatreWinston Smith rewrites history for the Ministry of Truth, but when he’s handed a note that says simply ‘I love you’ by a woman he hardly knows, he decides to risk everything in a search for the real truth. In a world where cheap entertainment keeps the proles ignorant but content, where war without end is always fought and the government is always watching, can Winston possibly hold onto what he feels inside? Or will he renounce everything, accept the Party’s reality and learn to love Big Brother?Sell a Door Theatre Company continue their 2013 season with Matthew Dunster’s faithful adaptation of George Orwell’s Dystopian Science Fiction novel.www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

Timothy West with The Pavão String Quartet in Intimate letters21 May7.30pm // £18 // £15 Concessions (includes wine). Uppingham School ChapelA dramatic retelling of the passionate illicit love affair that resulted in one of the finest and most passionate string quartets of the 20th century. It was not until 1916 that Leos Janacek’s opera Jenufa began to convince the Prague public that he was more than a provincial organist. The extraordinary work that poured out over the next decade forced them to acknowledge his genius. A year after his Jenufa triumph, unhappily married, he fell in love with Kamila Stösslova, a 35-year-old married woman with 2 children, who became the subject of the String Quartet “Intimate Letters”, which he dedicated to her.Their affair lasted until his death in 1928. In this dramatic recreation Timothy West reads the composer’s love letters – access to which was restricted for over forty years - interwoven with the movements of the composer’s magnificent and lyrical 2nd string quartet.www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

Johnny Dawes The Age of Lycra29 January 7.30pm // £10 Uppingham TheatreJohnny Dawes is a British rock climber famous for his dynamic style and very bold ascents. His climbs are rated among the very hardest in the world, including new routes such as the first ascent of the ‘Indian Face’ on the Welsh crag Clogwyn Du’r Arddu. Many have a reputation for terrible danger. His book Full of Myself was described by Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the screenplays for The Full Monty and Slumdog Millionaire, as “a beautiful book about an extraordinary person. William Blake with sticky boots.” His talk will be a fascinating insight into the world of elite climbing in his own words “a form of self-expression… dangerous but necessary”.www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

Stars of Live At The Electric (BBC3) and this year’s Edinburgh Fringe - ‘Not just silly but breathlessly so... no Fringe hours pass quicker’ (What’sOnStage.com), they have gathered a string of 4 and 5 star reviews since forming.‘Full pelt sketch comedy… makes the Fast Show look languid’ Guardian.‘Sigh-inducingly satisfying’(BritishComedyGuide.co.uk). www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

An Evening with Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate5 March 7.00pm // £13 // Adult Concessions £11 // Schools £10 Uppingham TheatreSince bursting onto the scene in 1985 with Standing Female Nude, Carol Ann Duffy has probably had more influence on the world of English poetry than any other living poet. Her ability to slide in and out of other imagined lives, her fearless originality, and her preference for using ‘simple words, but in a complicated way’ give her poems an unmistakable voice: clear, trenchant, lyrical, passionate. She has won every major poetry prize, including the TS Eliot Prize and the Pinter Prize, is a CBE, and as Poet Laureate thoroughly enjoyed her audience with Her Majesty the Queen. One of her first commissions was the much praised Last Post, a tribute to two of the last remaining veterans of World War 1. Her poetry is studied at GCSE and A Level, and is a wonderfully rich and varied source of language and imagery. This evening is a chance to hear her read and ask questions. She is joined by flautist John Sampson.www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

An Evening with Paddy Ashdown12 March 7.30pm // £13 // £11 Adult Concessions // £10 Schools Uppingham School Memorial HallLord Paddy Ashdown needs little introduction. During his distinguished career he has had many incarnations: Royal Marine and member of the Special Boat Service; international diplomat; career politician, Privy Councillor and first leader of the Liberal Democrats, leading them to their best ever election result in 1997. Resigning from British politics, and passionately concerned with the Bosnian Civil War, he became international High Representative for Bosnia in 2002. His latest book A Brilliant Little Operation is the first full account of how the Cockleshell Heroes mounted the greatest commando raid of WW2, on Bordeaux harbour in 1942 - told by the man who served in the Special Boat Section formed after it.Paddy Ashdown’s extraordinary range of national and international experience guarantees a fascinating evening...www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

Barry Cryer – “Twitter Twitters” with Colin Sell at the piano23 March 7.30pm // £14 // Concessions £13 Uppingham TheatreThe irrepressible Baz returns in yet another farewell tour, having been charged with persistent joking, and asking for twenty further shows to be taken into consideration. You are the Judge and Jury – be merciful unto the aged accused – he merely seeks to bring a ray of sunshine amid the dark clouds of life. He’ll be enjoying himself – do join him. The list of comedians Barry has written for has grown even longer since his last visit over a year ago, and wouldn’t fit on this page, but all who saw him last January will want to have another ninety minutes of sheer comedy pleasure. Book early to avoid unhappiness!www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop
