How Does YOUR Hearing Look?At a glance, hearing loss isn’t always this obvious. But it is the fastest growing, and one of the most prevalent, chronic conditions facing Canadians today. Many times hearing loss develops unnoticeably over several years. Most people compensate for the very gradual changes by asking others to re-peat themselves, turning up the volume of the TV, or even avoiding group conversations altogether.

But, allowed to continue, these habits may mistak-enly make you believe that it’s not your problem. With over 55 years of experience, we have the knowledge and understanding to get you back in the conversation. Let our team of experienced professionals help you find a better way to hear, that’s right for your lifestyle.

Convenientlylocated down-town for over 25 years.

copious amounts of music in KamloopsIf you love music, you are in the right city. The

City of Kamloops is home to some of the most talented musicians in a wide range of talents and genres. Want to have fun and laughs; think Mike the Party Hog, relax and chill to some breath taking harp, newcomers Christina & Neil have you covered. From beautiful newcomer Anita Eccleston to seasoned professional and radio per-sonality Henry Small, we here in Kamloops make music and good music at that!

The list of great local acts is almost endless. From Margit Bull to Earthbound and their amaz-ing lead Kira Gosselin, young Ben Bermiller to country award winner Art Pruce, the list is long and chances are you can catch them live here in Kamloops. Unlike many other cities, musicians in Kamloops have the love, support and backing of the city itself and its many venues and businesses. There is no doubt that the City of Kamloops itself is in a league of its own when it comes to live music, the amount of venues available and the wide range of support for local and traveling musi-cians within its boundaries.

All throughout the year there are a number of venues that work hard at supporting our local musicians and bringing in other quality acts to fill up your free time. In the downtown core ven-ues like the Blue Grotto, The Art We Are, The Grind and the Kamloops Inn make time in their schedule to bring music to your ears on almost a weekly basis. On the North Shore venues like the Dirty Jersey, Chances Barside Lounge and Pogue Mahone’s also jam pack their evening entertain-ment with a line-up of quality acts and groups.

In the summer months, Kamloops comes alive with music. The City of Kamloops itself steps up to the plate with the help of bclc, Henry Small and Lee’s Music and plans two whole months of free outdoor entertainment. Riverside Park hosts Music in the Park nightly with bands and music from all over North America and even the globe stopping in to provide park goers with free shows nightly at 7pm. Turning it up in the last few years, they have expanded and now also host Music in the Park

during July and August at McDonald Park on the North Shore each Friday also at 7pm.

If that wasn’t enough, the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association also works hard each summer and hosts Live at Lunch and Live at Nite each July and August in downtown Kamloops. Tuesday thru Saturday, they turn up the volume and host live music in the lunch hour from 11:30am until 2pm along Victoria Street as well as at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre and Lansdowne Village on Thursdays.

Make a point to catch some live music today. Head down to the park after work to relax in the melodies, eat lunch outside on a patio downtown, check out the listings at your local bars and coffee houses. If there is one thing that Kamloops has its live music and lots of it!

Mike Braniff aka Mike the Party Hog has been performing classic rock, 70s and 80s rock, pop, and the blues for the last 28 years. Name a song and he can play it! Watch Mike play at Chances Barside Lounge, 1250 Halston Avenue, on August 26 at 7pm.

rivertown Players entertain kids and kids at heartThe Kamloops Arts Council’s

Rivertown Players have been making headlines in Kamloops for the last few summers and this season is no exception. The talented theatre group works hard Tuesday through Saturday staging live theatre shows for kids of all ages twice daily at Riverside Park and special per-formances elsewhere through-out the summer.

They are so comedic, profes-sional and entertaining that they recently were awarded the first place prize in the community street performance category at the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association's summer Busker’s Showdown which not only awarded them a prized blue ribbon but also $500 cash. You can catch their show twice daily; 1pm and 3pm down at Riverside Park.

“Join Andrew Crabbe, Kirsten Sandberg, and Dianna Springford

as they bring Don Quixote, Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, and Percy and The Dragon to life. This is storytelling of epic proportions – physical com-edy, songs, and interactive fun with each character telling their own story,” explains Jacquie Brand, general manager of the Kamloops Arts Council. “Part one of Medieval Knights started at the beginning of the summer and ran until end of July. Make sure to go down and see part two, which begins August 2nd.

Medieval Knights is gener-ally geared for an audience of children ages 4 to 10, but will be enjoyed by people of all ages (even adults!). The produc-tion is weather permitting! The Kamloops Arts Council Summer Student Arts Program receives funding from HRDC’s Canada Summer Job Program and City of Kamloops Community Arts Grant.

This summer's Rivertown Players are Andrew Crabbe, Kirsten Sandberg (wearing moustache) and Dianna Springford.

summer games entertainThe Western Canada Summer

Games officially announced details of the nightly festival scheduled to take place in Riverside Park from August 5 to 13 in conjunction with the Games.

“This is going to be a huge com-munity celebration with some-thing for the whole family,” states Wayne Hall, festival coordinator. “Imagine Canada Day, but for nine days in a row”.

Wayne, along with Niki Remesz, has lined up an incredible vari-ety of entertainment, displays and activities that is sure to delight children and adults alike.

The festival gets started August 5, at 4pm on the plaza outside of Interior Savings Centre (ISC). There will be music, Uncle Chris the Clown, a fire hoola hooper, face painting, stilt walker, street chalking and more. Then at 7 pm the Games Torch arrives to official-ly kick off the Games inside ISC during the Opening Ceremonies. Local dignitaries in Kamloops have confirmed they will each run a leg of the Torch Relay during the upcoming Games. Mayor Peter Milobar, Chief Shane Gottfriedson and MLA’s Kevin Krueger and Terry Lake are all slated to take part in the relay which will be part of the Opening Ceremonies. The Torch Relay will start at the Kamloops Airport, wind its way through town and end in a final, triumphant, lighting of the caul-

dron at the Opening Ceremonies inside ISC. The Torch Relay will kick off the Western Canada Summer Games as approximate-ly 1,000 athletes from western Canada arrive for the first week of competition at the Games. An estimated 4,000 people will visit Kamloops during the two weeks of the Games.

Every day after, up until August 13, there will be a community cel-ebration in Riverside Park between 4 and 10 pm. The fun will include two stages of music and entertain-ment featuring amazing B.C. tal-ent, such as Daniel Wesley, a food

court, interactive dis-plays, an art show, the Westjet Fun n’ Festival Series, Tk’emlups Indian Band teepee setup workshop and arrow head making, CFJC TV onsite, cultural performances from the provinces and territories and the list

goes on. For details of the nightly festival check out the Games web-site at www.2011wcsg.ca.

Throughout the ten days of the Western Canada Summer Games the City will host 2,300 athletes, coaches and managers. It is also anticipated that an additional 2,500 visitors will accompany the athletes. Many of these people will be taking part in the festi-val, so this is a wonderful oppor-tunity to meet people from all over Western Canada and show them why Kamloops is Canada’s Tournament Capital!

Born and raised in White Rock, BC, is musician Daniel Wesley who will be performing at the Western Canada Summer Games celebrations.

The red feet are back on the North Shore representing the 32 artists participating in this years Artwalk event. This year the Arts Council promises it is going to be bigger than ever with a new start and end point as well as the addi-tion of some of our local quilters form the Cotton Pickers Quilt Guild who will be participating and showing their work.

North Shore Artwalk is an annu-al event that partners local artists with North Shore retailers in an attempt to showcase the diverse, artistic talent that is so preva-lent in our community. Everyone is invited to pick up a map at participating retailers and walk along Tranquille Road to take in the art, and perhaps shop a little too, in the wonderful North Shore stores.

For the first time ever, Northills Centre is joining in on the fun. Not only will the mall be filled with art but they will also be hosting a series of artist demon-strations as well! Says Jacquie Brand, Kamloops Arts Council general manager, “Northills is number one on the map and is a great place to start and end as the parking is free, and once you have visited all of the businesses and received your stamp, you can have a coffee to end the day at the Sandwich Tree.”

She continues, “The North Shore really comes together for this event and each year we fea-ture the works of art that make up the Festival of Banners, which is an annual event that celebrates the artistic talent of local children, youth and adults.”

Not only are the banners fly-ing high on the signposts along Tranquille Road, but banners from previous festivals dating as

far back as 2003 will be on dis-play at Northills Centre. For any-one interested in owning a large piece of local art, these banners will be available for purchase and are just $30 each.

The North Shore Artwalk runs until September 5 with opening night on July 29 from 4 to 8pm at the North Shore Farmer’s Market

on the Spirit Square. Come meet the artists and view their beauti-ful art work and for even more entertainment, the Kamloops Arts Council Rivertown Players will be performing free Children’s Theatre! Come out and enjoy what Kamloops artists have to share as well as the fabulous shopping on the North Shore.

View the work of 32 local artists at Artwalk

Cotton Picker’s Quilting Guild will be showing their quilted items in stores on the North Shore during Artwalk. The Guild has been in Kamloops for 10 years and has 48 members! The guild has ongoing monthly projects, demonstrated by members, and then taken home and completed. This year is a house block quilt. They have two “Quilt ‘til You Wilt” events each year when much talking and some quilting takes place.

The exhibition of photographs by Kamloops artist Victor Hamm can be scrutinized from many different perspectives—techni-cally, spiritually, politically and aesthetically. They are images of architectural or natural elements that can function on a more personal level as metaphors for subjective experience. Like the cracking and crumbling surface of the work in the Kamloops Art Gallery’s permanent col-lection, The Men’s Residence, Tranquille, these exquisite and overtly detailed images imply a certain fragility and vulner-ability. To those living in the Thompson/Nicola region of British Columbia the images are deeply authentic.

Inspired by the work of Ansel Adams (1902-1984), Victor Hamm strives to attain the pure essence of the land and the sub-lime moments that have little or no human activity. The works in this exhibition are no excep-tion. Hamm concentrates on the

fundamental nature of what is in front of him, strongly defined subject matter, weather patterns and ambient light. Light plays a significant role in his work and Hamm’s interest in the natural landscape and how light contin-ually redefines it, is paramount. He is motivated not only by his sense of aesthetics but also a love of the natural environ-ment and his desire to see it protected.

The works in this exhibition are created using a Nikon D2X digital camera and printed using the Giclee process. The Giclee process was invented in the early 1990s to produce high-resolution digital scans using special large format printers. Most Giclees are printed onto various substrates—canvas, photo-based and fine art papers—using archival quality inks that provide extraordinary colour accuracy and longevity.

Victor Hamm’s exhibit is at the Kamloops Art Gallery until September 3.

Daily at 1:30pm is an amaz-ing and interactive science show/activity. Shows for the summer:

Week of August 2: Static Electricity

Week of August 8: Air Pressure

Week of August 15: Magnetism

Week of August 22: Circuits and Electricity

As well as the approximately 30 minute show each day, BLSC has over 130 different exhibits to explore in two rooms. These are hands-on learning activities that

are just plain fun. There have been summer

camps running throughout July with the second senior camp run-ning August 2 to 5 (4 days due to

the holiday), again for ages 8 to 12 (9am to 3pm).

Each camp has been a bit different from each other, with hands on cre-ative exploration.

Depending on which camp they are entered, children will explore and try out activities connected with light and pin-hole cameras, chemistry, rockets, dinosaurs, robots and lots more.

The Big Little Science Centre Summer hours are Monday until Saturday August 27 from 10am to 4pm and closed Sundays and holidays.

While traveling to Europe, South America or elsewhere at some point it is almost guaranteed that you will visit a church. Whether you are reli-gious or not, it is almost impossible not to be taken in by the beauty of some of these works of art. Why not check out a local piece of art here at home? Here in Kamloops the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of All Saints is offering icon tours of the interior of the church this sum-mer and they invite you to come and see the masterpiece.

“Icon Tours can be as formal or informal as the person would like,” explains Gareth Howell. “Our church is painted from floor to ceil-ing in icons which are depictions of the saints, Christ, the Virgin Mary and events from the Bible. Icons in Orthodoxy are considered an inte-

gral part of our worship. Anyone is welcome to come and see the inside of our church and there will be two people there on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1pm until 3pm or by appointment to help with any questions they may have as they walk through the history of Orthodox Christianity in Ukraine. The tours are being offered even if people are merely curious to see what the church looks like inside, if they've ever driven past the green domes and wondered what was inside, or for those interested in history, art, or religion.”

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of All Saints is located at 1044 8th Street. For more information or to book a tour call Father Mykola (Michael) at 250-318-5480 or 778-220-5584.

Fridays on the north shoreFridays are exciting on the North

Shore. With warmer weather blow-ing in and longer daylight hours you have much more time in the day to get things done and enjoy the outdoors. So why not start your weekend off right by spending it in your community? The North Shore Business Improvement Association (NSBIA) and the City of Kamloops have made this task easy by planning Fridays which are packed full of entertainment and frolic here on this side of the river.

The NSBIA once again started the Friday fun with their popular Friday night Farmer’s Markets. Happening each Friday afternoon/evening from 4pm to dusk until the Thanksgiving long weekend at Spirit Square, the North Shore Farmer’s Market is a must hit spot on the way home from a long week at work.

In addition to being able to buy fresh, local foods and goodies, the North Shore also hosts Music in the Park live each Friday night during the summer in McDonald Park. A short jour-ney from Spirit Square, load up on goodies and head over for a calm and peaceful night in the park. The entertainment which is courtesy of BCLC and the City of Kamloops is in addition to the regular daily entertainment in Riverside Park and is a great opportunity to be able to access entertainment without having to stray too far from home. McDonald Park is

not only a huge, wide, beautiful park but it has a full playground, outdoor pool, and water park to entertain the kids, has easy access to the Rivers Trail and is within riding distance from any point on the North Shore.

To get an idea of what is hap-pening on your North Shore, pick up the new I Love North Shore Guide and Directory at one of the neighbourhood coffee shops. To participate in the North Shore Farmer’s Market or to get more information about what the sea-son has in store you can call the NSBIA at 250-376-2411 and to

Kamloops artists are on exhibition at Arnica during the month of August. Close Knit/HOME by Emily Hope (group) and Harmony Ráine runs until August 27.

Emily and Harmony use the craft processes of knitting, crochet, sewing and other fabrication techniques, to make wry comments on the North American notions of “women’s work”, “home” and natural and built environments. Harmony presents an exhibition of sculptural environments that com-ment on the ingenuity of the animal species that adapt and modify their building structures to coexist in human society.

Emily will assemble a cityscape in the vault gallery, hand-crafted miniature homes and replicas of local buildings con-structed by women at bi-weekly “stitch and bitch” parties. She requested that the women re-create buildings that have some personal meaning for them. These small fabric con-structions are available for purchase through silent auction, and all proceeds will be donated to the Kamloops Women’s Shelter.

Arnica is located in the Old Courthouse Arts Centre, 7 Sey-mour St. W. The gallery is free and open to the public.
