It was during this time that he developed a pas- sion for painting the human face. He is drawn to old photographs of people – ordi- nary people. He gives the old pictures new narratives by abstracting the human figure. Sack is inspired by strangers in yearbooks, snapshots of orphans, school children and athletes. He states that “working from a photograph is paradoxically freeing: It comes not only with an established sub- ject, but a structure as well. Having con- straints is very liberating.” Starting with a pencil drawing, he paints watercolor on top, then seals the watercolor with a clear plastic coating. Sack moved from Washington to attend East Carolina University, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and has remained in NC ever since. The Monitors will be kicking things off for our weekend of music honoring the African American Music Trail. This long-standing tradition in Wilson is a reminder to us all of the unique and wonderful musical tradition of Eastern North Carolina. Performing their own blend of Rhythm and Blues for over fifty years, the Monitors never fail to bring down the house!

Leader of the Band, Bill Myers, has been with the Monitors for more than 50 years. He was a recipient of the North Carolina Heri-tage Award earlier this year. He has made it his mission to honor the cultural history of this region, and that energy and passion is felt through his vocals. Others include Sam Latham on drums, Gerald Hunter on guitar, Jerome Morgan on bass, Clark Mills Jr. on

piano, Robert (Dick) Knight on trumpet, Fred Moye on tenor saxophone, Donald Tuckson on alto saxophone, Willie Dupree on baritone and Mollie Hunter on vocals.

The celebration continues with Ira Wiggins and the NC Central University Jazz Ensem-bles! The Monitors represent the rich musical history of our region, and this internationally- known group of young musicians represent our future. This energetic group from NCCU will bring their exciting sound to the Boykin Stage, playing Jazz classics and some new tunes, too.

Under the guidance of saxophonist and flutist, Dr. Ira Wiggins, the jazz studies pro-gram at North Carolina Central University has flourished. Dr. Wiggins is a highly respected musician and educator with 15 albums to his

credit as a sideman and soloist. Dr. Wiggins is a recipient of the Walter J. Norfleet Award for Outstanding Service to the Arts by an Art-ist and the UNC-Greensboro Jazz Education Service Award. His influence on countless upcoming musicians has been why the NCCU Jazz program enjoys the fine reputation that it enjoys today. You’ll love this performance, with its youthful enthusiasm and catchy beats!

We hope you will come out both Thursday and Friday night. The Boykin Center will be filled with music from many talented musi-cians, who will be sure to create some magic! You don’t want to miss this opportunity!

Tickets are on Sale at the Arts Council of Wilson. Call 252-291-4329 or visit us online at www.wilsonarts.com and purchase tickets through Etix.

Arts Courier reader, Well, A Banker’s

Holiday was over, and the first day we opened after that wonderful event, The Wilson Active Art-ists Association gave a holiday party in the Boykin Gallery, Snow White and her Dwarves were danc-ing in the Grand Stu-dio, and The Wilson

Woodcarvers and Visual Arts Academy were in their Studios.

You might think we were winding down in De-cember of 2014, but we continue to be a busy Cul-tural Arts Center for 2015. Although the galleries were closed to the public beginning December 22, there was a lot of activity. The deadline for this article was actually December 8, but I must say, it was not begun until December 9 after ask-ing Elisabeth, our Marketing Director, what she thought would be a good topic.

My juices were not flowing, and follow-ing the busyness of the prior week and the pain in my ankles, the “pep in my step” was a little sluggish! However, with a little encouragement from younger staff members, my spirit became willing, although my bones and my muscles said “sit down.” But, there was no time to sit, unless you were working on an article because there’s so much to do, so much to plan, and so much to be excited about in the Wilson Arts Center and the Edna Boykin Cultural Center that are managed by the Arts Council of Wilson, Inc., and the Arts Council Board of Directors.

Just after January 1, the Boykin Center will be filled with the music of Robin and Linda Wil-liams, those wonderful sounds you saw and heard in Prairie Home Companion; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and a week of Jazz with the African American Music Trail and NCCU’s Jazz Choir and Band. The Boykin Gallery will feature the art of Pete Sack, and the Lowe Celebration Hall will display the work of our Wilson Active Artists! Sallie B. Howard’s young artists will dis-play in the Cooke Gallery, and 2015 will begin with cultural arts experiences for everyone. You will find information about all those things and more in this edition that are right here in the Wil-son Arts Center and Boykin Center, just for you!

Yours truly,

W. Barrett (Barry) Page

The Arts Council Troupe for Youth or ACT! for Youth (AFY) is an entity of the Arts Council of Wilson whose purpose is to provide live theater opportunities for the youth of Wilson County and surrounding areas. Productions are open to children in kindergarten through high school age who live in Wilson County, or whose parent(s) live or work in Wilson County, or those who are contributors to the Arts Council of Wilson. The performances are open to the public, and school day performances are also offered during the school year.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Rehearsals for ACT! for Youth’s sec-ond production of their 2014–2015 sea-son, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, have barely begun, but director Chris-topher A. Ballance can barely contain his excitement. “I am just so ready for audiences to get to see what we are do-ing with this production,” Ballance says, “There’s so much creativity on our pro-duction team and it seems like at every rehearsal we keep adding new, exciting twists to this show.” Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the very first show that AFY did back during its creation in 1997, which was directed by former Arts Council Technical Director Brain Wingrove and his wife Wendy and cho-

reographed by Dance Studio “B” owner and director, Patricia Bradshaw, who will also be choreographing this season’s rendition. Even though this musical has some familiar faces, Ballance ensures that it is a completely different show. “I have seen the original ACT! for Youth production and creatively, we’re two different shows,” Ballance says, which is major factor in his excitement. “It’s a real testament to where ACT! for Youth and the arts in Wilson County have come and I’m ridiculously excited for people to see it,” Balance added. Rita Bennett, who works for Wilson County Schools as the band director at Speight Middle School, is providing the musical direc-

tion for this production. “What she has been able to do with the music from this show is insane,” Ballance gushes, “just listening to her in rehearsal and hear-ing what she does on the spot with the music is really impressive.” This is not Bennett’s first experience with AFY; she has also worked as musical director for Alice in Wonderland, The Secret Gar-den, and Tim and Scrooge. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be gracing the Boykin Center stage February 6, 7, 13, 14, at 7:30 p.m. and the 8 and 15 at 3 p.m. Tickets go on sale December 15. You can pick your tickets at etix.com and the Arts Council of Wilson.

February 6–7 and 13–14, 7:30 p.m.February 8 and 15, 3 p.m.

In their season finale, ACT! for Youth will be putting on the stage adaption of the classic Louis May Alcott novel, Little Women. Under the guidance of their beloved mother, the four young March sisters – tempes-tuous Jo, motherly Meg, shy Beth, and spoiled baby Amy – struggle to keep their family going while Father’s away in the Civil War. In this beautifully dramatized adaptation of the

classic novel, even as privation, illness, and sibling rivalry cast their shadows, each girl strives to find her true self. Auditions for Little Women will be held on February 16 and 17 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Art Cen-ter. For more information on auditions, call Performing Arts Director Christopher Ballance at (252) 291-4329 or email him at [email protected].

The “Roaring Twenties” was a fast-living world of luxury and glamour. But with this excitement came crime, corruption, and an impending financial collapse.

The Great Gatsby, Playhouse of Wilson’s final production for this season, is a melodrama that brings a

young man to Long Island where he learns that happiness and individu-alism are corrupted by money and dishonesty, and relationships have disintegrated into the insignificant and unadulterated pursuit of wealth.

Auditions for The Great Gatsby are Monday and Tuesday, January 26, 27, at the Wilson Arts Council. Shows will be March 5–8. Remem-ber, advanced tickets can be pur-chased by credit card by emailing [email protected]

Alan Whitehead is the WAAA featured artist in the Lowe Gallery opening on January 15 with a series of photographs titled, The Beauty and Uniqueness that is in Life.

Whitehead’s love for traveling and visiting new places inspired him to take photographs and he started with cap-turing the beauty of sunsets. This led him to other things and photographing his love for nature.

Whitehead enjoys traveling and during his trips, he al-ways has his camera on hand. He was captivated by the ancient ruins during a trip to Cozumel, Mexico, where he photographed them and the iguanas and tranquil sunsets overlooking the ruins. Visiting the Grand Canyon, and Australia offered breathtaking views which gave him the opportunity, “...to take some amazing photographs. I love to do photos that are both beautiful and unique in their own way,“ he said. Next summer he’s taking a trip to Greece, then Rome and looks forward to capturing some historical landmarks as well as those things embodying Greek mythology.

Whitehead has a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Liberty University. He is a recent widower with two sons aged 22 and 20. His works have been featured at the Wilson Arts Center and Zynique Gallery in Wilson. His exhibit will run through February 21, in addition to other WAAA members.

The Wilson Active Artists Association is honoring the memory of Wendy Ferguson-Whitehead as honorary featured artist in the Lowe Gallery with a selection of her artworks.

A past president of the WAAA and active member, Ferguson-Whitehead passed away earlier this year. A selection of her artworks will be on exhibit in the Lowe Gallery that have been chosen by her husband, Alan Whitehead.

She was a passionate voice for many organizations throughout the City of Wilson and other communities, as

well as an active contributor to our organization. She was a painter in her early years, a teacher, and be-

gan hand-sewing wearable artworks and hanging tapes-tries that told a story. She wove her way into the hearts of many that she touched and left a remarkable legacy. From the Artscapes program she taught in various com-munities to children after her retirement, and all the other organizations she was actively involved in, we honor her memory by sharing some her stories revealed in artworks, in colorful fabrics, each that are hand-stitched and will be on display from January 15 through February 21.
