The weekly series introduces important artists, musicians, poets, performance spaces and cultural works to its audience, showcasing the extraordinary range of what New Jersey and its residents have to offer. Keene, who recently penned Counternarratives, discusses his series of wide-ranging stories based in the African diaspora following the introduction of the slave trade to the Americas. Photographer and installation artist Wendy Red Star joins State of the Arts at the Newark Museum for a mid-career survey of her photography, textiles, and installation work, which draws on pop culture, conceptual art, and her native Crow traditions. Viewers also get an inside look at the unique artwork of Robert Forman. He uses colorful yarns and Elmer’s glue to create striking compositions, some of which are included in “New Directions in Fiber Art” at the Montclair Art Museum, now on display through June 2019. Finally, perk up your ears as 16-year-old Brett Miller takes to the ivory keys of the pipe organ to showcase his expertise at accompanying classic silent movies. State of the Arts joins the young virtuoso at the Trenton War Memorial as he plays the original score to the 1927 silent film, sci-fi classic Metropolis. From 1917-1924, a team of approximately 350 American women, including heiress Anne Morgan, appalled by news of wartime destruction, left comfortable lives at home to volunteer in the devastated regions of France. This documentary brings to life the adventures of real-life heroines and provides an up-close and personal view of the post-WWI period.
