Alabama Association of University Women
Huntsville Branch
AAUW Huntsville is pleased to offer Tech Trek, a week-long, residential STEM camp for girls
entering 8th grade on the campus of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The camp will be
held in June, 2017. Campers must be nominated by their science or math teacher and continue
through the application process. Their families pay only a $50 fee to attend the program and
scholarships are available to girls with STEM capacities.
This one-week STEM camp for rising eighth-grade girls got its start 15
years ago in California and since expanded to seven states including
Alabama in 2014 when the first Tech Trek camp was hosted at UAH in
partnership with AAUW Huntsville branch. AAUW’s research shows that
the largest population in poverty are elderly women, due to longer life
spans and earning less during their careers than males doing the same
work.
Women in STEM fields earn more in general and a mechanism of
encouraging women to enter STEM fields was the obvious solution. At
Tech Trek, girls are immersed in a world that empowers and encourages
them to think about themselves as future scientists, engineers,
mathematicians, and computer specialists. Campers take part in
activities like building and programming robots, working in cybersecurity, building their own very
tiny energy efficient homes, STEAM activities, learning how computer simulations are used to
predict weather patterns, and much more. Through Core Classes, Workshops and company
tours, campers are exposed to as many as 20 different fields and opportunities. Tech Trek has
been proven to significantly increase a girl’s self confidence and her interest, excitement, and
determination to enter a STEM fields.

ChromAddict Studio offers a variety of art classes that encourage creative expression. We offer
classes for children as young as six. Classes included drawing, colored pencils, acrylic painting, and
special Holiday crafts and activities. Owner and instructor Carrie Alderfer is an accomplished artist
and graphic designer. She works mainly in colored pencils or acrylics and likes to explore the many
facets and meanings of color. All classes are taught in ChromAddict’s studio at Lowe Mill ARTS &
Entertainment. Pre-registration is encouraged and can be done online at ChromAddict.com.
For children I offer "painting parties" to get them interested in art and let them explore acrylic paint
as a medium. All supplies are included with this type of class. These classes are meant to be an
introduction to art and the focus is creating for fun and finding confidence in self-expression. Kids
are given a rainbow of colors and can mix and experiment as they work on their projects. Classes
are limited to ten children, so everyone can receive individual attention and ask questions. For the
more serious young artist, I offer more in-depth sequence classes on art basics that cover the
elements of art, principles of design, drawing and painting techniques and more. Students can help
decide what direction the class takes and depending on the students’ interests; mediums may
include acrylic paint, colored pencils, pen and ink, pastels, and more.
For teens and adults I teach "paint-alongs" where everyone paints the same subject. All supplies
are included with this type of class. I demonstrate as everyone works along. Self-expression and
creativity are encouraged during the class. People can pick their own paint colors and modify the
subject as they desire. I am happy to help. Class size is limited to eight, so everyone can ask
questions and receive individual attention. We may be working on the same subject, but everyone's
painting doesn't have to look the same!
For the more serious artist I offer sequence classes. Each month I offer a colored pencil class
where we draw from a different photo that emphasizes a different colored pencil technique. These
are fantastic classes for the beginning to intermediate colored pencil artist. I also offer an art basics
class, similar to the one I offer for children. We cover the elements of art, principles of design, color
theory, drawing and painting techniques and more. Students can help decide what direction the

class takes and what mediums we use and projects we work on.
In addition to classes, private lessons can be scheduled. These can be for individuals or even
home school groups. Please contact me at [email protected] and let me know how I can
help you or your child be a better artist.
ChromAddict Studio is also a great place to have a painting party. It could be for a birthday,
scouts badge, bachelorette party, of even just a group of friends looking for a fun night out! And
painting parties make fantastic team building activities. The painting subject can be customized
for your group or you can choose from past class projects. Groups can be as small as four.

cally give an informal talk, hold a question and answer session, present a “mini” master class
and/or demonstrate their instrument, often playing excerpts from their coming performance. In
recent years we have had such luminaries of the classical world as Joshua Bell, Marilyn Horne,
Yo-Yo Ma, and Emanuel Ax perform and hold educational events. Often our events are followed
by a complimentary pizza party.

The Yellow Boat
October 21-23, 2016
Tickets will be available at www.showtix4u.com Suitable for all ages.
The Yellow Boat is based on the true story of Benjamin Saar, who was born with hemophilia and
died in 1987 at the age of 8 of AIDS-related complications. The play was written by Bejamin’s
father, David Saar, who is the founder of Childsplay and its artistic director. Along with the joys
and sorrows of a “normal” childhood, the play traces Benjamin’s short life as he and his family
face the special challenges of hemophilia and contracting HIV through a blood transfusion. We
see Benjamin admitted to the hospital, where, with the help of Joy, a Child Life Specialist, he is
able to form a team with the doctors and nurses in order to participate more fully in his treatment.
A uniquely gifted artist, Benjamin’s imagination transformed his physical and emotional pain into
a blaze of colors and shapes in his fanciful drawings and paintings that inspired all those around
him. The story is told through Benjamin’s eyes and his artwork. The play is a celebration of a
child’s life and a tribute to all children. Though it touches on and sensitively explores the serious
issues of death and dying and AIDS, this is a play about living. It is about the power of
imagination and art to transform our lives and make them full of color, energy, humor and hope.
Moby Dick the Musical
April 7-9, 2017
Tickets @ www.showtix4u.com. Suitable for all ages.
Cult hit Moby Dick! The Musical is a giant over-the-top retelling of the classic novel. Originally
produced by the legendary Cameron Mackintosh, this audience favorite played the West End in
1992. This goofy romp does to Herman Melville what Young Frankenstein does to midnight
horror movies!
The girls of St. Godley's School are in trouble! Money for the school has run out and the place will
have to close. Leave it to these resourceful girls, and their unflappable headmistress, to come up
with a plan to keep the school afloat. Using whatever they can find at hand, the girls mount an
original production as a fundraiser: a musical version of Moby Dick, featuring their headmistress
in the coveted role of Captain Ahab.

Solomon’s Academy
Currently, all programs have a five students to one educator ratio. My students are very involved
in their learning process by having discussions with essential questions concerning the topics,
practice by doing and implementing Garner's Multiple Intelligence perspectives and projects with
emphasis in teaching others. Programs are thematic, and holistic with hands-on, project based
exploration. Discussions are implemented throughout the class with opportunities to teach
others. With the small class size (five or less), I am able to adapt the lessons and present a
variety of levels. I request input from the parents and adjust lessons immediately when
necessary. As teachable moments occur, there is immediate discussion and application to
previous skills.

UAH—Department of Art, Art History, and Design
The Department of Art, Art History, and Design has a highly qualified faculty and an exciting and
diverse student body. Our spacious, well-equipped studios and classrooms are located in Wilson
and Roberts Halls. We have three gallery spaces, each with a different character, in which we
host student shows as well as exhibitions by regionally and nationally recognized artists.
Mentoring and Professional Training: When asked what they like the most about our
department, most of our students and graduates say it's our emphasis on one-on-one mentoring
and the professional training that we've built into our program.
Hands-On Experience: Our capstone courses provide start-to-finish team projects for real
clients in web design and game development. In addition, our professional practices course
introduces many career paths; hands-on experience in design, promotion, and gallery manage-
ment; and the development of portfolios to use after graduation.
Internships: We know that practical experience as an artist is invaluable, which is why we
encourage all of our students to intern with local business. These can range from advertising
agencies like Younger Associates to individual businesses with design needs like Sterling Health
and Benefield Homes to public institutions like the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and Merrimack
Hall. Some of our students even work right here on campus in our Continuing Education
Department and the Student Life office.
Graduate Studies: Many of our students choose to pursue art at the graduate level and
thanks to their high-quality work and the close mentoring of our faculty, almost 90% of them are
accepted into the programs they want with full assistantships and living stipends.
The UAH Department of Art, Art History, and Design, an accredited institutional member of the
National Association of Schools of Art and Design, is dedicated to preparing students with the
knowledge and skills necessary for pursuing lives as artists, designers, and art historians who will
be creative, inquisitive, and well-rounded individuals, conscious of the important role that artistic
endeavor and intellectual pursuit plays within their lives and throughout our culture.

Weeden House Museum and Garden
The Weeden House Museum, located in Huntsville’s historic Twickenham District, was the home
of several distinguished early Huntsvillians. The aim of the museum is to present the fine
architectural features of this 1819 Federal style house and to share the life of Maria Howard
Weeden, a famous poet and watercolorist, who resided in the house from 1846-1905.
Fees: $3.00 per student, no charge for chaperones or teachers.
Educational Tours
The Weeden House Museum showcases the works of Maria Howard Weeden, artist and poet
acclaimed for her watercolor paintings of former slaves and the poems that captured their
stories. Original works hang on the walls of this antebellum home and a sampling of her poems
is read during tours. Through her short poems, the people she painted come to life with their
personalities and relatable stories.
Built in 1819 and listed on the National
Register of Historic Places, the house
served as Ms. Weeden’s lifelong
residence. Students learn how the
residents lived prior to modern
conveniences and are guided through
what was happening in Huntsville
during the lives of the home’s
residents; the city’s growth, how people
made their livings, where they shopped,
how they got their food, when Union
Army Officers moved in and how life
varied after the Civil War.
