Kukje Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Jae-Eun Choi. Primarily based in Japan and Germany, Choi last exhibited in Korea at the Rodin Gallery in 2007. Work- ing with diverse mediums ranging from sculpture, installation and architecture, as well as photography, video and sound, Choi’s practice fuses delicate tech- niques of observation with monumental subjects and scale, in works that evoke subtle and profound curiosity about the natural world. [– verse] is mainly comprised of video and sound pieces that capture the night sky, photographs depicting the sunrise, and drawings with short verses of poetry on antique paper. Throughout her oeuvre, the artist has investigated and reflected on the accumulation of time and the life cycle found in natural rhythms. In this exhibition the art extends her focus to examine the firmament in various times of day, a subject that can be described jeongjoongdong, which translates as “subtle movements in silence”. 11 2012 Vol. 38 l Look at myself_Searching for the forgotten origin of sculpture Sculptor Jinho Choi is definitely one of the distinctive artists in the contemporary art scene where high-tech digital media are predominant. Choi has been firmly establishing his own identity as a ‘sculptor,’ with those who were once referred to as ‘painters’ or ‘sculptors’ now defined into a more comprehensive and ambigu- ous category—‘artists.’ It has been a long time since the boundaries between genres collapsed, leading to the era of combination, competition and conflict of diverse ar- eas including painting, sculpture, design, performance, architecture and technology. Still, his sculptures are eye-catching enough to stand alone, based on his own unique ‘granite sculpture.’ Jinho Choi has been basing his work around ‘stone sculpture’ since the early 1990’s. His most well-known sculptures, ‘Haechi’ and ‘figural stone sculptures’ still underlie much of his work, which have been developed into a variety of forms. This exhibition well shows such propensity of his work. What is particularly remarkable is that with the materi- al ‘iron’ appearing in front, works that harmonize with granite stone are seen. While his previous work involved the study of the basic figure or sculpture of Haechi, Choi presents Haechi and Mulhwak with more contempo- rary style of sculpture in this exhibition. For instance, sculptures with architectural factors are combined on a Haechi flagstone that went through the process of dis- solution and combination. Another example is a Haechi sculpture, for which Choi dualized the basic structure made of iron and added color, resulting in the sense of volume different from that of stone. The sculptures, sit- uated not only inside of the exhibition space but also at the right places of the garden including the gate of the art museum, tone in with nature and give people a sense of natural beauty. Ki-soo Park’s work ‘Sold Out’ at Hongkong Asia Contem- porary Art Show K&P Gallery, which was in charge of entering Ki-soo Park’s works, reported that on the ‘Asia Contemporary Art Show’ held at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hongkong from October 4th to 7th, a Korean artist Ki-soo Park’s work was critically acclaimed by collectors and gallerists com- ing from all areas of the world and all his works present- ed at the show were sold out. Ki-soo Park has taken his theme only from ‘mountains’ since his early days as a painter. Holding more than twenty private exhibitions exclusively on ‘mountains,’ he seems to think them as the best material for expressing Koreans’ emotions. Feelings of Koreans who live on a land surrounded by numerous mountains are well ex- pressed in thick colors and dynamic use of brushes. The artist who enjoys mountain climbing himself de- picts not a ‘mountain’ seen from a distance but a sense of life that he feels in a ‘mountain.’ His dynamic touch of brushes shows energy indwelled in Korean ‘mountains’ represented as the Baekdudaegan (a main mountain range on the Korean peninsula) instead of appearanc- es of ‘mountains.’ The artist’s energy appears to make a deep impression not only to Koreans’ senses but also to foreigners’. This ‘Asia Contemporary Art Show’ was featured with about seventy leading artists from seven countries in- cluding Korea, Hongkong, China, Taiwan, Australia, Thai- land and Singapore and held over two floors of Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hongkong. It was highly successful with famous American and European collectors other than Asians. It is notable that Ki-soo Parks’ eight works named ‘Stories on Mountains’ were all ‘sold out’ and he was the only artist who sold all the works. Ki-soo Park will have ‘Farewell Exhibition with Leaving for America’ at Hanbyeokwon Gallery (former Woljeon Museum of Art) in Palpan-dong, Jongno-gu from No- vember 1st to 7th and at 31 Gallery in Insa-dong from November 7th to 13th. It is said that even collectors with his works in Hongkong are passionate enough to decide to make a visit to Korea to watch his exhibition so it draws special attention from society of Korean paint- ers as well. In his early days, he mainly used metaphorical expressions for various circumstances where a human being exists with symbolical images such as foam of drinks in a paper cup or an empty or a half-full glass of wine. He made momentary love ex- pressed by a paper cup in a context of their disposabili- ty and an empty or a half-full glass of wine was used to draw meditative stories on human’s possession. In recent work, however, he sometimes draws a wine cellar in a winery or a collection of wine bottles with vivid labels of premium wine and he also presents an unusually small wine bottle compared to size of a wine glass. He already clarifies that he makes such choices to reflect a critical view on modern society where one’s class or position is determined by superficial markers like size or labels of wine, for example. It can reveal structural contradictions in human society that modern society which is believed to be fully civi- lized still has hierarchical aspects just like feudal soci- ety. However, it is very interesting to make antithetical elements collide and to intensify the precariousness in that he selects images like appearances or labels which baldly indicate the modern capitalist world and over- laps them with wine of sweet scent and flavor in which one would be willing to be lost.
