SARAH M.
The Period Shop marks the launch of the The Period Projects, a groundbreaking series of projects
inspired and led by real women like you who share our passion for change. The Period Shop project was
inspired by a Tumblr post from a young woman, Sarah M., who worked with U by Kotex® to make her
vision a reality on 5th Avenue in NYC. Part celebration, part proclamation, the Period Shop is proof that
together, we can change how we think about, talk about, and shop for periods. And we’re only
getting started.
Check out highlights from The Period Shop and other Period Projects at ubykotex.com
MEET SARAH M.
Sarah is the lady with the plan. Not only is she the brains behind the Period Shop, but she’s
intelligent, charismatic, and always ready to talk periods.
THE POST THAT STARTED IT ALL
GUESS WHAT? I’M CALLING FOR A PERIOD SHOP!!!! I want a space where we can feel
comfortable and respected during an otherwise shitty time of the month. My dream period shop
has: designer pads/tampons - ice cream - heating pad/phone charging station - mani/pedi
stations - live dj obvi - and sweatpants. HOW AMAZING WOULD THIS BE? Every woman (cis or
trans) will be welcome to bask in this glory!! THINK ABOUT IT LADIES!!! SOMEONE MAKE
THIS HAPPEN!!!
- Sarah M. February 25, 2016 via Tumblr (excerpt)
Tell us a little about yourself. I'm a college student majoring in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing, living in NYC. I'm obsessed with my favorite TV shows, makeup, and junk food.
ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE PERIOD SHOP GO TO SUSAN’S PLACE, A LOCAL TRANSITIONAL
RESIDENCE DEDICATED TO SERVING HOMELESS WOMEN.
THE START OF SOMETHING BIG
Q
Why do you think a Period Shop is important?
There are so many random shops for random things... women need a shop of their own! I feel like a Period Shop is so inclusive, it’s a space where we can get what we want during our periods, but also just bond as women and enjoy each other’s company.
Q
What are you most excited for this weekend?
This whole experience has been crazy to me! Seeing this idea become a reality has been unbelievable. So many people worked hard to make this happen, and I’m so grateful.
Q What do you hope women take away from the Period Shop?
I want women to realize that their period doesn’t have to be something that holds them back from doing what they want. It’s something to joke about, and if it’s possible, have fun with.
Q
How do you think we can make people more comfortable talking about periods?
A lot the stigma surrounding periods comes from the media, but I think that conversation needs to start between women. Mother and daughters, friend to friend, all women go through this, so why are we so afraid to talk about it? The only way to get the conversation started in the media is to get it started in our everyday lives.
Q What is your funniest/worst period story?
When I got my period for the first time, I called my mom to tell her the news, little did I know that she’d tell everyone she’d ever met. For the rest of that day I received phone calls and texts from my entire family (literally everyone) and a bunch of my mom’s friends congratulating me on “becoming a woman.” To say I was humiliated was an understatement; I was uncomfortable in so many ways that day!
Q
Finish the sentence: My period is...
Just part of being a female!
Q
What’s next for you?
Finishing my degree!
