Learning about the skin

The chemical balance of skin. Normal, healthy skin is chemically balanced at a slightly acidic pH. pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity in moist or liquid substances. A level of seven pH is considered neutral - above seven is alkaline and below is acidic.

affect skin, you need to take special care of

it in order to keep the skin looking the very

best that it can.

THE SKIN

Skin is the largest organ in the body,

measuring almost two square metres in

total area. The skin of the face and neck is

some of the most delicate skin on the body.

Since it is an organ, skin is a living thing

and therefore, if it is to remain healthy, it

must be fed and nourished the same as

any other living organism.

Can pore size be reduced?

What causes pores to clog?

There is no known way to shrink or reduce the size of pores. Enlarged pores

indicate a large oil gland below the surface.

It is, however, possible to make pores appear smaller with the appropriate

skin care measures - namely, those skincare techniques that remove oil

from the skin's surface. When the cells that make up the skin's surface are

free of excess oil, pores will appear smaller.

The inside of the pore (follicle) is made of layers of epidermal cells that are

constantly shedding, just like the surface of the epidermis. In a normal

follicle, the cells work their way to the surface and are sloughed off.

However, in people who develop clogged pores easily, dead cells have

a tendency to build up inside the follicle. The cells in these follicles become

mixed with excess oil and do not shed. When enough of these cells are

retained, they start to form a blockage in the pore.

The areas of the face that tend to clog the most are also those that are

the oiliest: the nose, the forehead, and chin. Here, dead cells mix with

excess sebum to completely block the follicle. An over production of oil is a

hereditary trait. Effective skincare minimises the effects of excess oil on the

skin's surface.

What is a pore?

Pores are openings in the skin's surface from which hairs grow and through which oil from oil glands flows to the surface. The size of a pore is proportional to the size of the oil gland under it.

What is Acne?

Acne can occur when a pore becomes clogged. This can happen at any age. Oil builds up inside the pore and can result in a ruptured follicle and inflammation... the condition of acne.

The skin consists of three layers, the subdermis, dermis, and epidermis,

with total depth of about 1.25mm. Each layer plays an important role in

keeping skin healthy.

The subdermis is the layer of fatty tissue that cushions the skin above it.

The dermis is the middle layer of skin. It contains collagen, the body's

super-protein that gives skin bounce, and elastin, the substance that

gives skin flexibility and durability. The dermis also contains blood

capillaries, nerves, hair follicles, sweat, and sebaceous (oil) glands.

The epidermis is the top layer of skin. It is 1 mm thick and performs the

critical function of cell renewal.

New skin cells form at the base of the epidermis and slowly move upward,

losing moisture and flattening out as they go.

These flattened surface cells are about 20 cell layers thick and form the

stratum corneum. This paper-thin surface is vital because it helps

prevent moisture loss, protects against environmental insult, and

protects the body's inner cells and organs. Sweat and sebum spread over

its surface and form an additional protective coating.

This is the cell layer that we treat and hydrate.

Cells on the surface of the skin are continually sloughed off to make way

for replacement cells.

The whole process takes about 2-3 weeks for younger skin, and about

twice that long for mature skin. The longer the process takes, the more

prone the skin is to moisture loss.

Throughout life, natural changes occur in the body's chemistry which affect

the function and appearance of the skin.

• Child

Skin is soft and unblemished.

• Adolescent

Shifting hormonal levels, increases in oil gland production, and genetic

predispositions make skin especially susceptible to blemishes.

• Adult

Oil glands become less active so skin becomes drier and less

susceptible to blemishes. The skin loses elasticity, resulting in fine lines

and wrinkles.

• Post-menopause

Shifts in hormonal levels, diminished regeneration of skin cells, and

reduced production of collagen protein cause skin to become dry and

fragile, with much greater likelihood to sag and wrinkle.

Possibly the most damaging of environmental factors is the sun. Over the

years continued exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays dries out, damages,

Cold temperatures combined with low humidity increase moisture loss to

the skin, leaving it tight and dry. Hot temperatures with low humidity also

remove moisture from the surface, literally "baking" the skin.

Strong wind, especially combined with extreme temperatures and low

humidity, can cause dry and flaky skin. Also, wind-born dust and dirt strike

the skin and stick to the surface, clogging pores and choking the skin.

Factors that affect skin

The health of skin depends on many factors. Some of these factors can be controlled while others cannot.

Continued exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays will result in premature ageing.

CONTROLLABLE FACTORS

Sleep is the most simple and basic remedy for the skin. During sleep, skin

renews itself by building new skin cells. Seven to eight hours of sleep a night

is recommended.

Water provides fluid for the body to flush impurities from the system.

Drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day helps improve circulation and speed cell

growth.

Food provides vitamins and minerals the body needs to function. There is a

direct correlation between healthy skin and good nutrition. It is extremely

important to eat a balanced and healthy diet.

Regular exercise helps revive circulation and speed blood to the surface of

your skin to regenerate it. Exercise will also help alleviate the negative

effects of stress.

Stress can have drastic effects on the skin, sometimes causing blemishes,

hives, loss of colour, and circles under the eyes. Habitually tense facial

expressions can permanently line your skin. Practice relaxing your facial

muscles in order to avoid frowning or furrowing your brow when under

stress.

These are the most easily controlled factors affecting your skin.

• Smoking constricts facial capillaries, allowing less blood, oxygen, and

nutrients to the surface of the skin, thereby making it look older. Smoking

also wrinkles the skin around the mouth and eyes.

• Alcohol and caffeine are diuretics that can force moisture out of your

system.

• Medication can sometimes adversely affect your skin and make it more

sensitive.

Everyone's skin is different, and ARTISTRY skincare products have

the epidermal cells undergo

constant changes as they rise from

the base of the epidermis toward the

surface.

During this time, one of their

functions is to produce the material

which becomes the complex

mixture of lipids that help hold the

cells together to form the stratum

corneum. This mixture of lipids is

manufactured inside the cells and

discharged into the space between

the skin cells. These lipids are

further modified by enzymes to form

multi-layered sheets which serve to

hold the cells together and provide a

barrier against moisture loss.

This is how it works:

The "hydro" in Hydrolipid Matrix refers to a complex of

carefully-selected humectant ingredients. Humectants

help trap and maintain moisture in contact with the

skin's surface cells. The skin naturally produces its own

humectants. Unfortunately, many of these humectants

can be depleted due to lifestyle factors and

environmental conditions and must be replenished in

order to keep the skin from drying out. Hydrolipid Matrix

contains some of the newest, most effective humectants

similar to those found in healthy skin.

The "lipid" in Hydrolipid Matrix refers to a combination of

the three main types of lipids found in the skin. Hydrolipid

cross-section of the upper layers of the skin as looking

like a brick wall. The "bricks" are the skin cells and the

"mortar" between these bricks is made up of lipids. As

with a brick wall, the skin cells make a good physical wall

(bricks), but without a barrier (mortar), moisture can

escape. With the addition of lipids, a stronger, more

resistant barrier is provided to prevent moisture

evaporation. The lipids used in Hydrolipid Matrix are

similar in structure and content to the lipids found

naturally in the skin.

is not a skin type, but rather a skin condition that

requires special care. For those with sensitive skin,

oily or dry characteristics become a secondary

concern. It is important to care for the skin condition

rather than the skin type.

• Whether your customer's skin is normal-to-dry,

normal-to-oily, or sensitive, it changes overtime due to

natural ageing, change of seasons, health, and

lifestyle. It is important to know skin characteristics

very well in order to learn to choose the correct

Determining skin typeA note on normal skin

When we say "normal" skin, we do

not mean it is the most common. In

fact, "normal" skin is actually quite

r a r e a n d u s u a l l y s h a r e s

characteristics with dry or oily skin.

Normal skin is characterised by:

• Uniform texture and

pigmentation.

• Skin appears clear,

soft and supple.

• No oily sheen or dry spots.

• Well-balanced secretion of

sebum and moisture.

• Few or no blemishes.

• Small pore size.

• Few or no lines.

• The T-Zone.

To choose or recommend the correct ARTISTRY skincare products for each customer's special needs, we must evaluate skin types.

The T-Zone is the t-shaped region of the face which

includes the forehead (the horizontal bar at the top

of the T) and the nose and chin (which form the

vertical bar of the T). The skin in the T-Zone is often

different than skin in the cheek and eye areas since

it is usually somewhat more oily than the rest of the

face.

The external effects of a bad sunburn may be temporary, but the long-term

effects of exposure to the sun are cumulative. Continued exposure to the

sun can cause critical harm. Ultraviolet rays passing through the epidermis

can damage the basal cells responsible for generating new skin cells. UV

rays penetrate the top layers of the skin causing sunburn, premature

ageing, and skin cancer. UV rays also penetrate deeper into the epidermis

and break down collagen and elastin, substances necessary for healthy,

youthful-looking skin.

Obvious signs of damage due to sun are thinning skin, wrinkling, loss of

elasticity, collagen breakdown, and uneven pigmentation. This damage is

permanent and irreversible. Skin may also experience overall dryness and

scaly patches.

Why are ARTISTRY products not labelled hypo- allergenic?There is no industry accepted definition of the term, hypo-allergenic. Consequently you cannot be sure what it means.

Why can some products, despite extensive testing, still cause a skin reaction on some people?No single skin product can be guaranteed 100% safe for every person in the world. Although all ARTISTRY products are thoroughly tested for safety, there will always be a small number of people who have unique sensitivities to certain ingredients that otherwise are considered to be completely safe. Just as some people are allergic to pets, dust, or even bread or milk, so too are some individuals allergic to common cosmetic ingredients. If someone is sensitive to a certain ingredient she will always have a reaction to it no matter how small the concentration. Allergies can start at any time in life; an individual can develop an allergy from a high exposure to a particular allergen. Sun exposure, use of prescription drugs, diet, and environmental conditions can all affect sensitivities.

All ARTISTRY products are tested on humans using the dermatologically-recognised and published Repeat Insult Patch Test (RIPT). This test measures a product's potential to cause an allergic response. We are careful not to use any ingredient known tocause allergic reactions, and this test makes us confident that our products will not cause a response with most clients. However, no product can ever be tested thoroughly enough

to be considered totally non-allergenic.

Can I combine products from different systems?Yes, of course. If, after trying a skincare routine using products from one system, you can experiment with other products to come up with the mix that is best for you.

Can ARTISTRY daytime moisturisers be used at night?Daytime Moisturisers intended primarily for daytime use. However, ARTISTRY Night Recovery Creme or Night Recovery Lotion is a moisturiser designed to work while you sleep. Its moisturising action helps diminish damage caused by the drying environment.

Are there any true "miracle" skin care ingredients that give results similar to a face lift?No. According to Government regulations, the only effect a cosmetics product can have on living skin is to moisturise it. Any product claiming to grow new collagen or erase wrinkles is legally considered a drug, not a skincare product. Any skincare product that makes claims beyond those of cleansing, toning, or moisturising is considered an illegally labelled product.

Which ARTISTRY Daily Skincare System is better to use for teenage skin?Teens with oily skin can benefit from the daily use of Clarifying Skincare System products developed for normal-to-oily skin.

Why do people with oily skin need a moisturiser?Skin with excess surface oil can still be dry. The oils produced by the sebaceous glands do not have significant moisturising properties. Skin might feel oily but there still could be considerable surface dryness. People with oily skin need a light moisturiser that moisturises the skin but does not add extra oil. ARTISTRY's Clarifying Balancing Moisturiser with SPF 15 is a 100% oil-free moisturiser and conditions the skin without oily residue.

Why shouldn't I use a bath soap on my face?Soaps designed for the entire body may be too harsh for the face. ARTISTRY Cleansers are designed and tested specifically for safe and effective use on the face.

wash my face rather than my hands?

Not necessarily. Both provide surface friction

which removes dirt.

Can men use ARTISTRY Skincare products?

What kind of routine should they follow?

Men benefit from skincare as much as women do,

and for the same reasons. Though men are

generally less concerned about wrinkles and fine

lines than women, a simple skincare regime

resulting in cleaner, healthier skin will make them

look and feel better.

What ARTISTRY Skincare products contain

alcohol and why?

Only Clarifying Astringent Toner, contain a

"drying" (ethanol) alcohol which is identified on

the label as SD Alcohol 40. The alcohol in

Clarifying Astringent Toner acts as an astringent

and removes excess oils and sebum from the

skin.

Various ARTISTRY products also contain fatty

(non-ethanol) alcohols; these are non-drying,

non-volatile alcohols which serve as thickeners

and as emollients. Behenyl Alcohol is used in

Clarifying Moisturiser. Cetyl Alcohol is used in

Moisture Rich Protective Moisturiser.

Are all ARTISTRY products non-comedogenic?

No. A product is considered non-comedogenic if

it does not cause clogged pores. A comedone is a

plug that forms in the opening of a sebaceous

follicle or pore. In humans, comedones require a

number of weeks to form; a comedone is not the

result of a single product application. Only

products left on the skin (i.e., toners,

moisturisers, and foundations) need to be tested

for comedogenicity because they are applied and

left on the skin for extended periods of time.

Products that are applied and immediately

removed (cleansers, masques) are not left on the

skin long enough to clog pores. Therefore, the

claim non-comedogenic is not valid for these

products.

ls it necessary to apply sun protection lotions on

top of the ARTISTRY moisturisers?

That depends on several factors. The ARTISTRY

Clarifying and Moisture Rich Moisturisers were

designed to afford sun protection during normal,

everyday, incidental sun exposure as you go about

your daily activities. In this way, ARTISTRY offers

you protection for these times without needing to

use an extra product.

What is the difference between young and

mature skin?

As normal, healthy, and well cared for skin

matures, it undergoes changes which are

consistent with normal ageing of other organs of

the body. Basically, all skin functions begin to

work slower and are less quick to respond to

changing needs or trauma. It takes skin longer to

recover from cuts and abrasions. Skin seems to

dry out quicker in the Autumn and take longer to

recover in the Spring, and is generally less

reactive overall. One of the most important

changes resulting from this slow down in skin

functioning is that it takes longer for the

epidermis to renew itself. This is how the stratum

corneum is constantly being replaced. It is the

stratum corneum which is the skin's first line of

defence and it needs to be in good condition to

fulfil this role. The stratum corneum of mature

skin has to perform this function longer because

it is not being replaced as quickly as in young

skin. Therefore, the water-soluble components

(humectants) and the oil-soluble components

(lipids) between these cells can be depleted. This

leads to a drier, rougher, and more brittle surface

which allows greater moisture loss out through

the skin as well as a less effective barrier against

environmental insults. Photo damaged skin can

result in what is known as "premature ageing" of

the skin. While this is different than normal

ageing, many of the features of photo damaged

skin such as dryness and wrinkling can make the

skin look much older than its real age.

What is the shelf life of ARTISTRY products?

All ARTISTRY products have a shelf life

(unopened) of three years.

Why is it recommended not to use the Polishing

Scrub more than twice per week?

The ARTISTRY Polishing Scrub contains

microspherical beads to exfoliate the skin's

surface without scratching. Periodic exfoliation is

beneficial to the skin's surface texture and

appearance however, too much exfoliation can

lead to irritation which may show up as red, dry,

itchy skin, and/or sensitivity to other ARTISTRY

products.

Can I use Alpha Hydroxy Serum Plus with other

ARTISTRY Moisturisers?

Yes. ARTISTRY Alpha Hydroxy Serum Plus with

AHAs has been clinically shown to enhance the

effectiveness of other ARTISTRY Moisturisers.

Alpha Hydroxy Serum Plus is a 2-in-l formula for

moisturisation and exfoliation that performs to

meet your needs. It is recommended for all skin

types.

Can people with sensitive skin use this product?

Yes. Clinical testing proves that ARTISTRY Alpha

Hydroxy Serum Plus can be recommended to

people with sensitive skin. Those with delicate,

sensitive skin should start slowly. Apply once a

day and increase to twice a day as the skin

responds positively.
