The world of live music became silent for too long so I present an absolute thriller of a Festival program here for you! I am incredibly proud to bring together such an outstanding group of Australian musicians who will each transform beautiful scores to musical sounds, which I know will stir our souls. It is of course with great sadness that myself and all the international artists will no longer be able to join you but I will be with you in spirit. In this new vision, bringing this stellar group of musicians together in one place still remains such a unique occasion and there is nowhere else you can support your national treasures on this scale playing chamber music. All have risen to this new challenge with such great relish and I really believe you are in for a special treat of exuberant, heartfelt and memorable music making. Special anniversaries which have not been properly celebrated are still at the forefront, as is music spanning centuries and continents and exciting commissions and premieres. Celebrating the magnificence that is Beethoven is relevant whatever year it is, so I hope you will enjoy my homage to this great composer a whole day inspired by his genius. Dancenorth have been at their

creative best, and their choreography is absolutely stunning and not to be missed. Another Festival commission brings together Beethoven and our beloved Goldner String Quartet. In celebration of their 25th anniversary, AFCM have commissioned 25 Australian composers to write short variations based on ‘Ode to Joy’ and the quartet’s performance of Goldner Variations will be a highlight of the Festival. A further highlight will be the Deborah Cheetham AO world premiere commission Nginda Ngarrini Bi Ngya. This is my final Festival as Artistic Director and although it nearly didn’t happen, I see this program as my last gift to AFCM and all our wonderful patrons, friends and supporters. I’m very proud of this Festival program called Carnival with the emphasis on celebrating everything AFCM has brought to you over 30 years. It has been the most gigantic preparation to make this happen and now we need you to make this journey complete. I’ve always said that a festival does not happen without that magic combustion; one which is all about the chemistry of musician and audience. It happens on stage with you there. Come and join these long-awaited celebrations!

Hello Music Lovers! Goodness, what a rollercoaster we have all been through with such unimaginable times on a global scale. When I visited Australia to launch the Festival last February, never in my wildest dreams could I anticipate what was to follow.

AUSTRALIAN FESTIVAL OF CHAMBER MUSIC 2021 | 03

A COVID SAFE AFCM IN 2021

At AFCM, the health and safety of our patrons and artists is the highest priority. We will be taking extra precautions to ensure that the 2021 Festival is delivered in a COVID Safe way, in full accordance with all relevant government directives. Please be assured that whatever mechanisms are required for registration, vaccination and testing will be applied at the highest level.

This year we are embracing the opportunity to provide more performance opportunities for Australian artists, and hope that 2022 will permit us to welcome back international artists to our Festival. The 2021 program is based on Kathy’s original vision for 2020 - Carnival - originally devised as a celebration of our 30th anniversary. We will continue to arrange exclusive performances by international artists to be presented to AFCM supporters digitally in the lead up to the Festival.

AFCM is required to adopt the protocols in place at each of our venues. Under current Queensland Government Stage 6 restrictions, patrons must wear masks to enter and exit the Civic Theatre and are not allowed to congregate in the Foyer. As a result, we decided to eliminate intervals from the program in 2021 to avoid frustration. It would just take too long to get our audience out of the theatre and in again. We would also like to draw your attention to the fact that evening concerts will start at 8pm in order to clean the auditorium between our sunset concert and the evening concert. Patrons will also be asked to enter the venue in groups to minimise queuing.

AFCM will provide alternate space for mingling (in a socially distanced way) and a glass of wine or a pre-ordered meal in the Forecourt and surrounds. Please note, dining will require the prior purchase of meals and no buffet systems are allowed. Touch surfaces in venues will be disinfected between each performance, and masks and hand sanitiser will be available at all AFCM locations. Arrangements vary at other venues but will be along similar lines. There will be no catering at St Patrick’s College due to their approved Queensland Health COVID Plan.

We are fortunate that North Queensland currently allows full venue capacity. As we know all too well, things may change. Therefore we would like to reassure you that you would be given a full refund if you cannot travel to Townsville due to border restrictions, being diagnosed with COVID-19, or otherwise restricted from travel or attendance due to COVID-19. We will provide all ticket holders with updates on any changes to COVID Safety requirements as they occur.

Although their owners ignore them, Stan and Mabel find great comfort in the music played by the flute lady, who lives downstairs. But one day the music stops. When Stan and Mabel go to investigate, they discover that their beloved neighbour has gone to Italy, to a competition to find the greatest orchestra in the world. A R T I S T I C D I R E C T O R / P I A N OKathryn Stott, UKAt the age of five, I made friends with the upright piano in our living room. That was the beginning of my musical journey, one which continues as you read this. It would appear that my initial progress was rapid and by the age of eight, I found myself at a boarding school for young musicians, the Yehudi Menuhin School. During my studies there, it’s now clear to me that I was heavily influenced by two occasional visitors to the school; Nadia Boulanger and Vlado Perlmuter.

From then, my great passion for French music was ignited and Fauré in particular has remained the musical love of my life. Further studies at the Royal College of Music in London then led me very abruptly into the life of a professional musician via the Leeds International Piano Competition. It remains the steepest learning curve I’ve ever experienced. After a rollercoaster three years, I realised that I needed to re-connect with chamber music in a bid to feel more connected to other musicians and after all, this had played an important part of my musical existence since being a child.

When, quite by chance, I met Yo-Yo Ma in 1978, it turned out to be one of the most fortuitous moments of my life. Since 1985, we have enjoyed a collaboration which has

taken us to so many fascinating parts of the world and led to musical adventures with musicians who shared so much from their own traditions. I’ve always considered us to be intrepid musical explorers on our own individual paths but with an incredible bond that unites us on the creative highway.

Presently, I enjoy the challenge of creativity in a different way by bringing many musicians together once a year in my role as Artistic Director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. My love of curating and directing began in 1995 and since then I’ve brought to life many of my ideas in events lasting anything from long weekends to two weeks. I continue to push my capacity for exploring music I know nothing about and love bringing together unusual combinations whenever possible.

There are too many highlights in my career to mention. Yes, it was a thrill to perform at the Last Night of the Proms to millions around the world, but equally a massive thrill to have lit up twenty small faces in an inner city school while they jumped up and down to energetic piano music! Working with young musicians is something I feel passionate about and presently teach at the Academy of Music in Oslo. I’ve also had some truly

exciting music written for me and enjoyed a particularly close collaboration with composer Graham Fitkin. What an unbelievable privilege it is to be immersed in a language which has no boundaries and has allowed me to share musical stories on a global scale; that little upright piano set me on quite a path! Talking of paths - I’ve also been found trekking in Nepal, Costa Rica, Bhutan or walking my spaniel Archie on the Yorkshire Moors.

The journey continues.
