The Artist

Premier designer of Artistic Decorative HardwareTM for your home

Michael was born and raised on the Cape Cod seashore. By the age of ten his father’s Air Force career had carried Michael halfway around the globe, exposing him to a variety of cultures, which fueled a desire to express himself artistically. Michael studied metal sculpture at the University of Notre Dame and developed a passion for design. After a tour of duty in the Air Force, his marriage and the birth of his four children, Michael chose to use his knowledge and interest in metalwork to open his own foundry on the banks of the Blackstone River in Rhode Island.

Michael worked casting architectural bronze and restoring historic statues throughout New England before shifting focus to his own original artwork. Combining his knowledge of the foundry sand casting process and his own desire to create highly functional forms of art, Michael was inspired to develop his famous line of unique door knockers. Thus started his venture making artistic decorative hardware for your home.

A dedicated and passionate artist, Michael continues to design daily.

Michael Healy Designs is committed to conducting our business in an environmentally responsible and proactive manner, consistent with our commitment to corporate citizenship, social responsibility and sustainability. Our commitment to the environment is reflected in the designs and themes of our products which pay tribute to and embrace the beauty of nature.

The metals used in our products are recycled to minimize waste. The scrap generated by the production process is put back into the furnace to cast new items. The natural clays and sands used to make the molds are reused over and over and are non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

We are always looking for ways to increase our energy efficiency through facility upgrades and more efficient technologies. Lastly, we work with business partners and suppliers that strive for the same high levels of environmental performance.

Concept to Form It starts with a sketch which is then sculpted into a three–dimensional model.

Lasting ProtectionEach door knocker receives a baked polyurethane finish similar to the clear coat finish on your car to provide years of protection. Michael’s signature confirms its authenticity and quality craftsmanship.

Raw Casting to Polish After the metal cools, the sand is broken away and the raw metal casting emerges. Through multiple phases of grinding and polishing, accents and highlights are added to each piece.

The Art of Sand Casting An impression of the model is made in fine sand into which 2300o metal is poured. Each mold can be used only once making each piece truly unique.

Michael Healy Unique Door Knockers™ are unmatched in their quality and craftsmanship. Sand cast in solid brass then hand polished, they add instant curb appeal to any home. With over 100 designs, Michael has the perfect unique art form for your front door.

Finishes

Nickel SilverTo create the Nickel Silver finish

the brass casting is first polished

to a mirror finish through a sanding

and buffing process. The piece is

given a nickel plating to achieve

its warm silver color. Michael

combines this high polished finish

with brushed accents to generate

a contemporary look.

Oiled BronzeThe Oiled Bronze finish is attained

by first plating the brass casting

in copper then dipping it into

a patina solution. The patina

solution gives the copper a deep

brown color. It is then buffed to a

satin finish highlighting the metal

beneath. This process is repeated

until a rich, dark, multi-tone finish

is achieved.

Brass & BronzeBrass and Bronze are copper-

based alloys. The yellow brass

alloy used to cast Michael’s

designs contains 70% copper

and produces a warm, traditional

brass look. Red bronze contains

almost 85% copper. This

additional copper content gives

the bronze alloy its rich, reddish

undertone.
