Contemporary fine art practice is made up ofa dazzling array of activities. It embraces adiversity of philosophical, sociological andcultural influences, engages with a widerange of issues, and adopts and adapts anoften bewildering range of materials, techniques and forms.

The Artist Teacher Scheme was establishedin 1999 and is a rapidly expanding nationalprogramme of continuing professionaldevelopment courses for teachers of art and design. The central aim of the scheme is to enable participating artist teachers toextend their awareness of the richness andcomplexity of contemporary fine art practice, and the diversity of thinking and influenceswhich inform it.

The course will be delivered by artists andtheoreticians who relate closely to

developments within contemporary fine artthrough their own practice.

The course is intended for artist teachersworking, or aspiring to work, in primary, secondary, further and higher education, andis designed to meet a range of expectationsand requirements. It is not essential thatparticipants are currently engaged inpersonal art practice. The course can be seen as:

• A series of related events that can be 'dipped into'

• An independent, free-standing accredited course

• An access course for possible future study on the arts based Master’s programme at Birmingham City University and for the MA Art and Education and MA Art Practice and Education also offered at Birmingham City University.

Introduction

The course will explore ideas and influences within contemporary art practice and take these as the starting point for an integrated approach to fine art practice and learning. The work of art is primary to the course. Ideas and issues discussed will relate directly to work seen during visits to The New Art Gallery Walsall and Ikon.
