Migraines affect about 10% of the population. Many scientists believe they may be caused by chemical changes in the brain that affects your blood vessels. It's suspected that altered levels of brain neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and stress hormones are involved. Certain events may effect the action of these chemicals.

Here are five things that are common causes:

Stress is the most commonly reported migraine trigger of all. There have been multiple studies showing that stress is often increased in the days before a migraine. Research suggests stress generates changes in brain chemicals which may help initiate the process.

Hormonal fluctuations in women appear to be a strong migraine trigger. Women often report migraines before or after their monthly cycle, whilst pregnant and during menopause. The use of contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy may worsen migraines.

Sleep disturbances are also high on the list. People who have migraine headaches are much more likely to report sleep abnormalities like night sweats, jerking awake, and not feeling rested after sleeping. This means they aren't getting enough deep sleep, which is required for the production of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. This variation in brain chemicals may be what triggers the migraine response.

Blood sugar fluctuations caused by missing meals and regular intake of sugars and processed carbohydrates may set off the reaction.

Certain foods may contain ingredients that can cause a migraine attack. Food-related triggers can

be a "hidden" problem. The nitrates in deli meats and histamines in beer and wine are common triggers. Let's also not forget about cheese, peanut butter, chocolate, foods laced with MSG and one which is in many of our diets almost every single day - gluten.

If you are a migraine prone person, one of the first things recommended is to start a migraine diary. Here's what you should keep track of: • When your migraine started and when it ended• Any medications taken before onset• Foods and drinks consumed in the last 24 hours• Amount and quality of sleep the previous night• Stressful events in the past 48 hours• Activities preceding headache• For women, when your menses started and ended

This can help establish the pattern behind your migraine headaches, and when you know the pattern, it helps you know what to avoid.

In the meantime, there are also some natural supplements that can help.

Feverfew is at the top of the list. It has been clinically proven to reduce both the frequency and severity of migraines. Research indicates Feverfew can prevent about two-thirds of migraines. Try taking a Feverfew supplement 2-4 times per day. Feverfew should not be given to children under the age of 2, and the dose after that age should be monitored by your medical/health care practitioner.

Magnesium is also a winner. It's known as the "relaxation" mineral and helps increase the blood

flow to the brain. If you don't have enough magnesium, you might be more prone to migraines. However, taking a daily supplement containing 250 to 400 mg of magnesium, in a divided dose, may help you avoid these brain-clobbering headaches.

The combination of good quality CoQ10 with Feverfew and Magnesium can be a "magic" mix for many people. Research studies indicate that CoQ10 helps reduce the frequency, the number of headache days and the severity. It is very worthwhile to try adding 100/150mg of CoQ10 daily to your support regime.

Omega 3 fatty acids, as found in oily fish, flax seeds, walnuts etc, or taken as a supplement, are well known to reduce inflammation, which would benefit anyone prone to "ordinary" headache pain as well as those who endure migraine attacks.

While you may need to experiment to see what works for you, there is no doubt that these natural remedies have been found to be a good starting point.

This list of triggers is very far from complete, but hopefully may offer some clues to this most debilitating problem. An accurate medical diagnosis is most important, so if you suffer from persistent headaches that just wipe you out for a couple of days at a time, in the first instance, please see your doctor.

As a gardener you will benefit greatly from having grafted plants in your garden. Grafted plants are much more robust and have a longer lifespan than a plant grown on its own roots. Grafted Grevilleas use a reliable rootstock, typically Grevillea robusta, that allows many varieties of spectacular Grevilleas to be grown and enjoyed in a much wider range of soils and climates than previously possible.

INTERESTING INGREDIENTS

Dulse is a seaweed that has a mild salty, nutty flavour. Sea vegetables are a worthy addition to the diet as they contain many bioavailable vitamins and minerals that are not available in land vegetables. They contain iodine, which is important as iodine is deficient in many Aus-tralian soils and therefore lacking in most diets. Sea vegetables are a good source of essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, mag-nesium, phosphorous, chromium, iodine and zinc and trace elements.

Dulse is easy to use as it does not need to be dehydrated. Simply sprinkle onto salads or vegies, on noodles, soup or eat straight from the packet. Dulse is available in the Grocery aisle.

Grevillea Bon Accord is a bushy upright shrub with dark green foliage and lovely red stems. Large flame red spider flowers on the top of branches in winter and spring. Grows to a height of 2 mtrs and similar spread. Lovely used as a hedge and Responds well to regular pruning.

Grevillea Billy Bonkers is lovely feature in any garden. The hotpink flowers cover the plant most of the year. It loves full sun andwill grow to 1m high, and spreads to just over 2m across. Adds a splash of colour to any garden.

Grevillea Ivorywhip is a small to medium size Grevillea growing to1.5m high by 1.5m across. It's long ivory coloured flowers hang from the end of every branch. The nectar is a favourite with the bees and the birds. The flowers constantly form over the plant throughout the year.

Did you know...it can take a Eucalypt over 150 years to form a suitable hollow for birds and small creatures to nest in. Land development is a huge threat to native wildlife as these precious nesting hollows are destroyed. You can help provide a much needed nesting box in your garden for safe breeding and sleeping of wildlife.Specialised nesting boxes for many local species are available at the Garden Centre, along with all the information you need to encourage a good habitat for wildlife in your area.
