Background

Legislation requirement

European Commission Directive 2007/19/EC, effective since April 2009

A new overall migration limit (OML) of 60 ppm becomes applicable to metal closures

(300 ppm before!)

PVC lined caps fails under this directive, particularly due to plasticizers migration

when used with sterilized fatty foods

Alternative sealants with minimized migration potential to replace PVC in metal caps

are needed

Market requirement

Explicit purpose of principal fillers of going to PVC-free packaging

Unilever, Wallmark and other intent to replace PVC from packaging as soon as

possible. In the next years they want to use pvc-free alternatives in the metal

closures.
