Articulated All-Terrain Tracked Carriers

The all-terrain articulated tracked carrier is a tracked vehicle with two units, joined by articulated steering unit. All four tracks of these vehicles are powered. These are highly mobile machines, capable of travelling over rough terrain, soft ground, snow, swamps and even inland water obstacles. Their wide rubber tracks and low ground pressure of the vehicle enables to coupe with difficult terrain conditions. Articulated all-terrain tracked carriers are fully amphibious. On water vehicles are powered by their tracks. Engine compartment is located behind the cab. The rear unit can accommodate a variety of bodies. In some cases the rear unit can vary considerably from the front. These articulated military vehicles can be used for many roles, including troop carriers, command vehicles, recovery vehicles, weapon carriers, cargo carriers, ambulances, reconnaissance vehicles, technical support vehicles, equipment carriers and so on. Articulated all-terrain tracked carriers can be armored and carry their crew, troops, cargo or equipment under armor.

The BvS10 armored all-terrain tracked carrier is a further development of the Bv206S. It was developed by Hagglunds in cooperation with UK MoD. Improvements are based on experience gained from more than 25 years of articulated vehicle design and production. The BvS10 is in service with United Kingdom (143) and the Netherlands (74). It is locally known as the Viking in UK. This product name was later adopted by the Dutch Army. First vehicles were delivered in 2003. In 2012 Sweden also ordered 48 of these all-terrain carriers.

Vehicle consists of two articulated tracked units, linked by a steering mechanism. All four rubber tracks are driving continuously. Viking has the same superior mobility over rough terrain as it's predecessor.

The BvS 10 provides all-round protection against 7.62-mm ball rounds. Vehicle retains mobility even if a track is damaged by an anti-personnel mine. Optional add-on armor makes it invulnerable to the 7.62-mm armor-piercing rounds.

The BvS 10 has improved payload capacity comparing with it's predecessor and provides seating for a total of 12 men, including the driver. Forward unit has a payload capacity of 800 kg, rear - 2 000 - 3050 kg, depending on mission profile. Vehicle can also tow trailer with a maximum weight of 3 t.

Vehicle can be armed with 12.7-mm or 7.62-mm machine gun, mounted on top of the forward unit. The rear unit can be configured to carry various weapon systems. However in its normal deployment this vehicle remains out of contact with hostile troops.

The BvS 10 articulated tracked carrier has new engine and chassis. Vehicle is powered by the Cummins diesel engine, developing 275 horsepower. Vehicle is fully amphibious with less than two minutes preparation. It has operation range in temperature range from - 46°C to + 49°C.

Development of the Bv 206 all-terrain articulated tracked carrier began in 1974. Three batches of trial vehicles were delivered between 1976 and 1978 and the first production examples were were delivered to the Swedish Defense Administration in 1980. Since then the Bandvagn 206 has been produced in thousands by Hagglunds and is in service all around the world. It is a family of multi-purpose amphibious tracked vehicles. The Bv 206 is widely used, especially by the Swedish armed forces, the US Army (who have developed a desert version), the British Armed Forces, and the German Army (who use only diesel-engined versions). The type has been license-produced in Chile.

The Bv 206 in its basic carrier form is a twin-unit articulated tracked vehicle that can carry up to 17 troops or 2 250 kg of supplies (6 troops or 630 kg in the front unit, 11 troops or 1 620 kg in the rear unit). Normally both front and rear units are fully enclosed but for some applications the rear unit can vary considerably and in some cases is left fully opened, such as the mortar carrier or can accommodate a variety of bodies. From the earliest stage the Bv 206 was designed to be versatile and it has been proven so in service.

The engine originally a Ford V6 petrol unit but later a Mercedes-Benz diesel, is in the front unit together with the automatic transmission. Connection to the rear unit is made via an articulated joint which is also used for steering. It gives great flexibility in all axles and extremely good maneuverability. The simplicity in the handling of the vehicle involves a minimum of driver training. Most bodies make extensive use of light plastic-based materials but the chassis uses light alloys.

Power is driving on all four of the tracks, which exert a ground pressure of less than half of the man's foot.

Bv 206

Articulated all-terrain tracked carrier

The Bv 206 can negotiate such obstacles as soft snow, drifting sand and marshlands. It can climb considerable gradients, swim without preparation and and work in arctic cold or in tropical heath. The vehicle can be airdropped and transported by a variety of aircraft and helicopters.

Variants of the basic Bv 206 abound. It is used as alight artillery tractor, an ambulance, a communication or command post, to carry various anti-tank weapons such as the Bofors BILL or TOW, for ground-to-air missile systems such as Bofors RBS 90, and even to carry radar systems.

Armored variant of the Bv 206 is the Bv 206S. It has modified cabs and armor plating on all it's bodywork.

The latest member of the Bv 206 family is the BvS 10 improved armored version. It is new larger vehicle, with improved load capacity. The BvS 10 has the same superior mobility in difficult terrain, combined with the same speed on road.

The Bandvagn 202 or Bv 202 articulated all-terrain tracked carrier was developed by Volvo for the Swedish Army. Production commenced in 1964 and ceased in 1981. This all-terrain carrier was purchased by Sweden, Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom. It is also referred as the Snowcat. It still remains operational with some of these countries. The Bv 202 was employed in Arctic, Antarctica, as well as Middle East.

This articulated all-terrain tracked carrier was designed to transport troops, cargo and equipment through difficult terrain, snow and boglands in the northern parts of Sweden. This twin-unit articulated tracked vehicle can carry 10 troops or 1 000 kg of cargo. Front unit is fully enclosed, while the rear unit is covered with bows and canvas cover.

The front unit contains engine and gearbox. Initial version (Mk.1) was powered by a Volvo B18 1.8-liter petrol engine, developing 82 hp. Later version (Mk.2) was fitted with a more powerful Volvo B20 2.0-liter petrol engine, developing 97 hp. These were a standard car engines. Both engines are coupled with manual gearboxes. Power is provided both to the front and rear unit tracks. The front unit accommodates driver and commander.

The rear unit is connected via an articulated joint which is also used for steering. It gives great flexibility in all axles and extremely good maneuverability. It has bench seats and carries 8 troops or cargo. It can also be adapted for other applications.

The Bv 202 has incredible mobility over rough terrain. Vehicle uses wide tracks and has lees ground pressure than a skier, that allows it to go over snow and marshes. This all-terrain tracked carrier is fully amphibious without preparation. On water it is propelled by it's tracks.

Variants of the Bv 202 include a Bv 203 mobile radio communication vehicle.
