1.1 SIRS Discoverer -- Overview

Welcome to the learning module for SIRS Discoverer -- Overview. SIRS Discoverer is designed to teach skills in reading, writing, and language through introduction to early research for elementary and middle school students as well as English Language Learners.

1.2 Session Objectives

By the end of this session, you will be able to categorize featured content sets available in SIRS Discoverer; select and utilize search options and results; and locate resources to enhance student research and educator engagement.

1.3 SIRS Discoverer

Notes:

On the main screen, research and educator tools are found on the upper menu, followed by keyword search functions.

1.4 Topics

Notes:

Under the Research Topics menu on the upper left, SIRS Discoverer’s highlighted content sets are shown, namely Famous People, Countries, States & Provinces, Controversial Issues, and Animals. The lower section of the main screen titled “Need help choosing a topic?” provides a clickable visual


representation of these same content sets. Each content set is designed to make finding and learning its content easy.

1.5 Famous People

Notes:

Famous People allows you to choose between sorting alphabetically, or looking first at the latest additions, or those which are most popular by usage. You may also narrow your list to people in specific categories, such as Authors or Sports Figures, then navigate back through the breadcrumb trail if you wish to move to a different topic. Clicking an individual will provide details on that person.

The Famous People biographical page includes contents, an expandable summary, biographical articles and interesting facts, a Timeline of the famous person’s life, and a link where you may run a subject search for more information on the individual.

1.7 Countries, States, & Provinces

Notes:

In Countries, States, and Provinces, flag images represent each entity. The list may be sorted. You may additionally isolate to country reports, state reports, or province reports. Country reports include an overview with links that jump to additional information.

Notes:

These include Basic Facts, Flag, and Map, as well as a Timeline, Did you know fact of interest, and a link to run a subject search to pull all indexed information on the country.

1.9 Controversial Issues

Notes:

Controversial Issues may also be sorted by popularity, most recent, or alphabetically. When accessed, you will find a detailed and structured page with a Contents and Topic Overview for context, essential Terms to Know, an Essential Question for research with two example Viewpoints and articles supporting them, additional Viewpoints, a Visual Literacy exercise, and Critical Thinking Questions. Suggested related subjects or issues are provided for an expanded search.

1.10 Animals

Notes:

The Animals search provides you with tabs to focus on a variety of animal types. Once an animal is selected, an overview is provided with Related Images.

Notes:

The Key Facts page will provide you with more than ten unique categories of factual details for your animal of interest. You may run additional searches by subject as well as see other related Animal topic pages.

1.12 Search and Results

Notes:

Search includes the Basic Search on the main page, as well as an Advanced Search. In Advanced Search, you may limit to a specified Source Type, Publication Date, and reading level, or Lexile Score range. Common search features found in the ProQuest platform may be used in any search, such as SU for Subject, or TI for Title. You may additionally search using Boolean operators OR, AND, or NOT. Results may be limited by Publication Date, narrowed by Source Type, and Sorted By Most Recent or Relevance. Results will provide a Text-to-Speech option, View related documents, and a Use this document section which includes Cite, Print, and Email. The Save to Cloud option provides the ability to connect to Google Drive, Google Classroom, or Microsoft OneDrive for saving and sharing. Each article provides Related subjects links at the bottom of the page.

Notes:

On the main screen, you may access the Educators’ Resources link. This will provide access to student and classroom enhancement resources, such as the Share This idea and update blog, Training Webinars, and the SIRS Discoverer LibGuide.
