A Gallup survey of 1,527 adults conducted in June of this year found that the institutional church could be “losing its footing as a pillar of moral leadership in the nation’s culture.” In the mid-’70s, nearly 7 in 10 Americans said they had “a great deal or quite a lot” of confidence in the church or organized religion. That has bobbled downward decade by decade to a new low of just 42%, according to the report. 1
In a cultural environment where church organizations have lost members by the millions and the confidence of millions more, it is encouraging to be connected to a global church organization that has maintained its moral and doctrinal integrity. I am speaking of the United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI) of which we are part.
I was first licensed with the UPCI in 1978 and have been an ordained minister for almost 30 years. The body of Christ in the earth cannot be contained in a single organization. However, being connected to the cause of the Kingdom around the world is a compelling reason to be UPCI.
Why be UPCI? The Message!
The fundamental doctrine of the UPCI mirrors that which was taught by the Apostles of Jesus Christ. As Oneness Pentecostals, UPCI constituents do not rely on church tradition or history as the basis of doctrinal views. We rely solely on the Scripture as the source of truth and model for church life. There are a few core doctrines that set the UPCI apart from non-Apostolic churches.
The Nature of God
The beautiful message of Scripture is that our Creator became our Savior. The God against whom we sinned is the One who forgives us. God loved us so much that He came in flesh to save us. He gave of Himself; He did not send someone else. Moreover, our Creator-Savior is also the indwelling Spirit who is ever-present to help us. God told us how to live and then came to live among us. He showed us how to live in the flesh and laid down His human life to purchase our salvation. Now He abides within us and enables us to live according to His will.
Jesus Christ is the one God incarnate, and in Him we have everything we need: healing, deliverance, victory, and salvation (Colossians 2:9-10). By recognizing the almighty God in Jesus Christ, we restore correct biblical belief and experience apostolic power.
Salvation
The Christian experience and doctrine of the UPCI conforms to the complete biblical pattern. As we respond to the gospel and believe on Jesus Christ, we will repent of our sins, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts chapters 2, 8, 10, 19).
The Bible is the sole authority for salvation; the basis of salvation is Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection; salvation comes only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ; and the
application of grace and the expression of faith come as a person obeys Acts 2:38, thereby receiving the new birth promised by Jesus.
Biblical Holiness – Our Apostolic Identity
Holiness is an integral part of the salvation of the whole person from sin’s power and effects. It is a joyful privilege, a part of abundant life, a blessing from God’s grace, a glorious life of freedom and power. The life of holiness fulfills God’s original intention and design for humanity. For the Spirit-filled believer who loves God, holiness is the normal—indeed, the only—way to live.
Why be UPCI? The Mission!
The UPCI is a Oneness Pentecostal organization with churches, ministers, and members across the globe. With roots anchored firmly in the Bible and a vision for ministering to communities around the world, the UPCI embraces its mission: “the whole gospel to the whole world by the whole church.”
The UPCI has been among the fastest-growing church organizations since it was formed in 1945 by the merger of the Pentecostal Church Incorporated and the Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ. From 521 churches in 1945, the UPCI in the United States and Canada grew to 4,459 churches (including daughter works and preaching points) and 9,413 ministers in 2014.
An International Church
In 2014, the Global Missions division of the UPCI reported works in 201 nations outside the U.S. and Canada, with 34,491 churches and preaching points, 21,485 licensed ministers, 886 missionaries, and a constituency of 2.4 million. The international fellowship consists of national organizations that are united as the Global Council of the UPCI, which is chaired by the general superintendent of the UPCI. Total constituency is estimated at 3 million.
The Georgia District UPC
The state of Georgia is organized as a district in the UPCI and is divided into eight sections. The district board consists of a superintendent, secretary, eight presbyters, and honorary members. Currently there are 94 churches, plus daughter works and preaching points, and 186 ministers with a constituency of 11,099 based on the 2015 Easter attendance.
The annual Georgia District Campmeeting is a rallying point for ministers and members from around our state. This year, Campmeeting is being held June 30-July 3. Worship and preaching is the focus with an added emphasis on connecting members to our cause. (See ad in this issue of The Messenger.)
