Medical Therapy

• COX- 2 selective nonsteroidal anti-

inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as

celecoxib and rofecoxib are now to be

considered first-line drugs of choice for

treating moderate to severe pain, and mild

pain associated with inflammation.

• The cardiovascular effects of COX-2

inhibitors were evaluated in a review of

multiple studies published in the August 22

edition of the JAMA This review focused

on two major studies in particular, each

with over 8,000 participants: the Vioxx

Gastrointestinal Outcomes Research Study

(VIGOR) and the Celecoxib Long-term

Arthritis Safety Study (CLASS).

COX-2

• VIGOR showed that Vioxx increased the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke, almost two-and-a-half times. Two other smaller studies also suggested a relationship between Vioxx and these conditions. CLASS indicated an increased risk for cardiovascular events in COX-2 users, but was inconclusive because of minimal data.

Nutritional Supplements

• 1 CHONDROITIN reduces inflammation. This effect is explained by many action mechanisms. First, it causes a decline in pro-inflammation prostaglandins. Then, it inhibits many enzymes secreted by chondrocytes including elastase and hyaluronidase. These enzymes are responsible for the elimination of old cartilage, making room for the new one.


• 2 GLUCOSAMINE SULFATE is a supplement used in osteoarthritis. When orally given, it is more effective than placebo and at least as effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in relieving osteoarthritis symptoms. .

• 3 MSM is a Sulfur compound. The

proper acid/alkaline balance of the

body cannot be maintained without it.

MSM can lower pain levels by 50% or

more. MSM reduces inflammation and

helps to restore mobility.



• 4 CHICKEN COLLAGEN TYPE IISeveral controlled trials provide evidence that oral administration of type II collagen is both safe and can improve the clinical manifestations of active rheumatoid arthritis. The Harvard Medical School study found that several of the joint sufferers taking daily Type II Collagen from chicken cartilage were able to successfully decrease or, in some cases, eliminate joint medication


• 5 FLAXSEED is derived from the flax plant.. Flaxseed is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid that appears to be beneficial for heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, and a variety of other health problems.. Several studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids help reduce tenderness in joints, decrease morning stiffness, improve mobility, and allow for a reduction in the amount of medication needed for people with rheumatoid arthritis and, probably, osteoarthritis as well.


• 6 BROMELAIN is a general name for a family of sulfhydryl-containing, proteolytic enzymes obtained from Ananas comosus, the pineapple plant.

• Bromelain’s primary component is a sulfhydryl proteolytic fraction. Bromelain also contains a peroxidase, acid phosphatase, several protease inhibitors, and organically bound calcium.


• 7 BOSWELIA (active ingredient -terpenoids). Boswelia has been used to treat osteoarthritis. Boswelia behaves much like other NSAID’s (i.e., aspirin, Motrin, Celebrex) in that it decreases inflammation. It does so by decreasing the number of leukotrienes, one of the molecules responsible for causing inflammation.


• 8 CURCUMIN Turmeric (Curcuma Longa)Turmeric is a spice from Asia, in the ginger family. It is mainly used in curries and as a yellow coloring agent in food. Its anti-inflammatory property in osteoarthritis may be due to its effect on the eïcosanoïd biosynthesis and the arachidonic acid pathway enzymes.
