Like all typical Filipino kids, when asked what he wants to be when he grows up, he said that he aspires to be a doctor or a pilot. In the Philippines, Filipinos are conditioned while still young about the importance of practicality. It is not  just enough to pursue one’s passion because it is equally important to have a stable and a high-paying job to cope with the demands of living in a society where everything has a price. Sadly, because society holds prime importance to practicality, it runs the danger of masking potentials and limiting one’s imagination to what he or she might be in the future.

Meet Jomar. Like all typical Filipino kids, when asked what he wants to be when he grows up, he said that he aspires to be a

doctor or a pilot. In the Philippines, Filipinos are conditioned while still young about the importance of practicality. It is not

just enough to pursue one’s passion because it is equally important to have a stable and a high-paying job to cope with the

demands of living in a society where everything has a price. Sadly, because society holds prime importance to practicality, itruns the danger of masking potentials and limiting one’s imagination to what he or she might be in the future.

Due to society’s penchant for practicality, less people aspire to be an artist - a fashion designer, illustrator, or a musician. To

pursue a career in the arts is perceived to be impractical and majority believe that art should be pursued only as a hobby.

Because of this mentality, while there is progress in various fields such as medicine and technology, the same could not be

said in the field of the arts. Fact is, there is no money in pursuing a career in the arts, thus, talented artists are not able tofully develop their potentials because they tend to scrap the idea of pursuing art as a career.

It could be said that art shapes the culture and identity of a community and it is for this reason why art should be cultivated

and preserved. Art is environmental and people experience it everyday for it is an inextricable part of life. Everybody

appreciates and loves a certain form of art... some write, design or play an instrument. However, not all pursue a career in

the arts because of practical concerns. With this, there is an opportunity for “everyday entrepreneurship” by bridging artand practicality, and the challenge to actualize this opportunity is how to turn art to money.

arthiveArtHive is a business concept that aims to nurture both art and entrepreneurship. The idea behind this concept is for artists

to earn money through their works of art. In this way, artists will be encouraged to pursue a career in the arts and be an

entrepreneur at the same time. Also, in ArtHive, even non-artists can earn through collaborating with artists because ArtHive

believes in the spirit of collaboration... everyone can earn. ArtHive is an Internet-based portal that is accessible anytime andanywhere; thus, enabling everyday entrepreneurship to everyone.

ArtHive derives its concept from a beehive where bees collaborate together in order to produce honey. Honey is produced

from pollen which bees extract from flowers and contribute to the beehive. In ArtHive, artists are like bees which contribute

and share their works of art, may it be in fashion, illustration or music. The spirit of collaboration in ArtHive is also alive as

seen in the collaboration between artists and non-artists to produce money. Whenever an artist uploads his work, he canearn when 1) someone buys his work or 2) when a user decides to fund the artist and in turn gain a share from the profits.

Here is an example which aims to illustrate the concept of collaboration further: When a fashion designer wants to launch a

collection, but does not have enough capital, he can upload his designs and an ArtHive user can buy “shares” through

pledging to help fund the collection. When the fashion designer is able to collect enough pledges, he will then collect money

from the users who expressed interest and thereafter produce the collection. All of the profits from the collection will bedivided based on the “shares” bought by a user. The artist has full control in fixing the terms of the collaboration.

The concept of collaboration that ArtHive aims to cultivate responds to the needs of artists for funding to turn their pieces of

work to a business. Allowing users to pledge and help fund artists is a good business move because once these users

pledge, they are also accountable to the business. Thus, they are compelled to extend their resources to the artists and also

help in marketing the works of the artists that they support. Of course, ArtHive does not only address the problem of fashiondesigners but also illustrators who rely on networking to gain a name in the industry.

The problem that musicians face is the expenses of producing a record and the lack of connections to produce their own

record. In ArtHive, musicians are invited to upload their songs and users are encouraged to pledge on the artist or a band

which they believe has a great potential to shine. Since non-artists can pledge on an artist or a band, they can contribute in

gaining connections for the musicians to have exposure. Here it could be observed that in ArtHive, everyone (both artist andnon-artist) can earn together through the spirit of collaboration.

Turning art to money -- this is the vision of ArtHive. ArtHive aims to empower people to continue developing art because it

shapes the culture and identity of a community. ArtHive believes that artists can be entrepreneurs too who can turn their

works of art into money. ArtHive also aims to give a new face to the idea of entrepreneurship by showing that

entrepreneurship can be perceived as a collaboration of different people to achieve progress. Ultimately, the end goal ofArtHive is to empower artists, cultivate art and to spread the collaborative spirit of entrepreneurship to everyone, everyday.

Hopefully, ArtHive can create a community which is more receptive to art and whose citizens are open-minded in pursuing a

career in the arts. It is the mission of ArtHive to bridge art and entrepreneurship to create a community that provides a

supportive environment for artists. ArtHive enables everyday entrepreneurship because artists and non-artists can earn

together through collaboration. Hopefully, ArtHive can paint a community for Jomar and many other children to let theirimagination have unclipped wings.
