The Artemis Project Top 50 recognizes the advancements with
potential for wide-scale success. This year, our 12-judge panel and the
EPA identified companies within the Top 50 that are challenging the
status quo with trailblazing solutions to long-ignored water problems.
The APEX Award recognizes nine innovators with sustainable business
models and technologies transforming water management.
“The pioneers in water tech are focusing on the first markets where
dramatic savings in water, energy and resources matter,” says Laura
Shenkar, principal of the Artemis Project.
Water scarcity, ecosystem breakdown, and infrastructure decay
demand far more than incremental improvements.
“Good companies offer economically viable solutions, but great
companies offer solutions that last a lifetime and create sustainable
value for their shareholders and partners,” says Rengajaran Ramesh of
Wasserstein and Co.
We are excited to honor these nominees who aren’t just saving water.
They’re also managing infrastructure, recovering energy and resources
from waste, and preserving ecosystems.

Desalitech’s seawater desalination process
reduces waste brine by more than 50% and
energy use by 35%, thus reducing overall
system cost by up to 20% compared with
previous-generation, state-of-the-art
desalination plants.

Emefcy’s Electrogenic Bioreactor (EBR)
technology recovers electric power from
wastewater during treatment, generating
1.1kWh produced and saved per kg COD
removed. The treatment cuts sludge waste
by 80%, enabling plants to generate
revenue selling energy and carbon credits.

In 2010 alone, HydroPoint’s WeatherTRAK
irrigation technology saved users more than
15 billion gallons of water, 62 million
kilowatt hours of power, and 82 million
pounds of CO2 – while avoiding more than
$137 million in water bills and other water-
related expenses.

The M2 Renewables MicroScreen filtration
generates 16 MMBtu of feedstock energy
value for every million gallons of waste-
water processed. Their system is ideal for
producing energy through gasification: in
simulations it generated 250 KW on a 5
metric-ton-per-day gasifier.
