ARTEGROUND SCANDINAVIAArteground is an open community of Finnish professional artists with task to bring international attention for artists working in Finland and to present our cultural backbone of thinking through art. Currently active group of artists are invited to participate to “Arteground Scandinavia” edition, which presents a cross-section of Finnish artscene. Project is ambitious: combining a group of famous, established and emerging artists to bring together a wider perspective of life, by a group of artists working with several different mediums in visual arts.

Arteground was established in 2009, with initial project to organize an exhibition in the internationally famous cultural city of Viljandi, Estonia. Exhibition was curated through an open call for all Finnish artists working with professional art organizations, after which the first exhibition was held in Viljandi in 2010 and briefly followed by a second exhibition in 2011. In 2012 Arteground reorganized bringing together sixteen artists in a group exhibition ’Die Zeit’ which was presented in Gallerie Wagner + Partner, Berlin, December 2012.

TRUTH = HAPPINESSArteground Scandinavia edition theme for a planned series of exhibitions in Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland) for 2014-2015 is Truth = Happiness.

We are The Arteground and we make this TOGETHER: all the participating artists work as EQUALS. Exhibited artist and their works create context for a discourse for the exhibition theme. This on going process is currently in action, while preparing the exhibitions. While we are exploring the theme as a community, we are also prepared to work with an external curator to arrange an exhibition tailored for the exhibition platform.

Thematic idea originates from the prosperous status of finnish society as an model example of a nation where everything is “good”. Question is: What kinds of things are worth of it? To state out to others in this kind of society?

JARI JÄRNSTRÖM:Watcher, acrylic and oil on canvas, 81 x 65 cm, 2013

I start my work by painting the background with acrylic colours in an abstract expressionist way using the style of Action Painting, where the paint can run and spread freely. Action Painting is a style of painting which started in about 1950s and was predominant style until the 1960s. It is often connected to the Abstract Expressionism. Instead of adding the paint to the canvas with careful brush strokes, in Action Painting the paint is splashed and added spontaneously in various ways. I first moistens the canvas with water and then I start to pour, sprinkle and run the acrylic colors into the canvas. The flow of the water and colours forms different kinds of blotches, puddles and spatters to the surface of the canvas.

After the background is done, the work continues with oil colours. This is the point when especially the influences from Constructivism and Neo-figurative art arises. Constructivism emphasizes the geometrical shapes, structures and methodicalness of the art. After that coming influence from figurative art which based on representational art and therefore based on representation of the objects and human. My characteristic pictorial motifs, like human and especially a man are a part of my works.

SATU KALLIOKUUSI: Uterine death, 37x50 cm, red wine and ink on paper 2013

Topics of my art comer from the basic elements of human life, from birth to death etc. In this exhibition I am presenting some thougts and feelings of relationships between man and woman, how it works in good and bad and something between that also. I have been thinking about is it posible at all to make it work... In this serie I needed as simple materials as can and I found first ink and then red wine. I found there materials also some symbolic meanings: black ink as death and ground, red wine as life and blood.

SANNA KARLSSON-SUTISNA: Public Works

Sanna Karlsson-Sutisna (MA) is a dance and visual artist who graduated from the Finnish Art Academy in 1989. Her professional experience includes studies at the Berlin High School of Arts, as well as further studies in Cuba and Bali. She has focused on studying the roots of art in ritual cultures. She is best known for bringing art to everyday life by performing and sculpting in surprising places, for her environmental art, and for creating permanent “Flower of Life” art parks in Helsinki and France for children under 3 and their families. She has combined images, sculpture and dance to suffuse her performances with ritual form and multicultural elements, enriching Finnish art and everyday life. Her expert knowledge of Balinese culture and dance add depth and conviction to her work. Karlsson-Sutisna has held solo-exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions since 1979, and given dance performances in both her home country Finland (Kuopio Dance Festival) and abroad, in Germany, Denmark, Russia, Sweden, Austria, Poland, England, Indonesia and Cuba. Her works are part of both public and private collections.

Karlsson-Sutisna’s art searches for an increasingly deep unity with nature. She sends roots down deep into the earth and draws on the traditions of our ancestors up to the modern human being.

ANNU KAPULAINEN: Latvia - White blood cells uprised (from the series Red and White countries), oil on canvas, 110 x 120, 2013

My main theme as an artist is the human being. I seek to describe the world and its phenomena through people or still life. In my art I often work on social and psychological issues and the contrast between man and nature. I have been inspired by different symbols and associations of colours, especially the colour red with its vast amount of different meanings. Symbolism plays a big role in my art.

PÄIVI KOSKINEN1977, Vantaa / Helsinkiwww.paivikoskinen.com

I am interested in combining reality with illusion. I portray people I know or meet along the way, based on what they have shared with me before we take the picture. I always look for people who identify themselves with my projects. The picture is created from a private performance that challenges the person participating in the process. The concept of identity and the way people are influenced by society interests me. I am curious about the subconscious and feelings accumulated underneath the surface. In the end, happiness is all about being true to your self.

In my series Forget-me-not, I wanted adults to recover the inner child inside of them by asking them to play with me. The exercise was to forget for a while all social rules and to do something you could have done as a child. To enter a place, where everything is possible. A place, where you do not have to worry about what others think of you. For me, happiness is about enjoying the simple things of life. Something we too often forget as adults.

VILLE LAAKSONEN: Opium, oil and acrylic on canvas, 230 x 150 cm, 2013

Let me present an anarchistic statement of faith between man and life. Expand thinking to the extended field of painting and the psychedelic consciousness of the mind. Art is live. And by this I mean each work that artists gives life to is an actual living being: existing as you are. Mere question of belief keeps from proceeding. Listening to the sound of color that is light one sees there is no other movement but the one in experiencing.

Making series of paintings is emphasized in my artistic work. Narrativity is essential for me. My work is overlapped with the history of art and gets its driving force on it. I connect art history to a social contemporary criticality. In the sense I can say they are political.

SARIVUORENPÄÄ:Reflections,woodblockprint,121x121cm,2012.

Sari Vuorenpää specialises in multi-coloured large-format woodcuts. Strong, bold colours are characteristic to her art and the colour gives a shape and an atmosphere for her works. Often, the starting point of the woodcuts is watching a landscape, the balance between beauty and threat, and combining it with personal interpretations and observations of the world around us.

Graphic artist Sari Vuorenpää has worked as an artist since 1991. She studied graphic art at Satakunta Polytechnic, Fine Arts Kankaanpää and in the Fine Arts Continuing Education Programme at Lahti University of Applied Sciences, Insitute of Fine Arts, completing a Bachelor of Culture and Arts degree. Knowledge of woodblock prints Vuorenpää has deepened during trips in Japan, and she has also participated in many exhibitions in Japan and been rewarded at Kyoto Art Festival in 2009 and 2012.

MAGDALENA ÅBERG: Display (taxidermy I), 2013, Oil on canvas, 41x33 cm

I think the human longing, my longing, towards nature into, which man partially belongs, and also does not, has provided the impetus for my most recent paintings, a series called Display. What is living and what is dead? Why do people collect stuffed animals to put in museums? The longing for a natural state, a fascination for natural phenomena, its power both astounding and beautiful. The fascination of what we see in these stuffed animals, what is familiar to us and what is foreign. I endeavor to capture and convey, that which in animals is corporeal, hairy, feathered and wild, untamed and even erotic. Underneath all the polished and smooth surfaces of society, hides a longing for nature outside the confines of civilisation. Nature, which still exists in all of us.
