The Aspen Institute presents the legacy of Herbert Bayer: recent gifts and loans to the Aspen Institute, offering a broad perspective, surveying Bayer’s lifework. It is a retrospective, highlighting works in a variety of media, including: painting, sculpture, tapestry, photography, graphics, advertisements, and ceramics that have been gifted or loaned to the Institute from private collections. Bayer diligently adhered to the ethos of the Bauhaus throughout his artistic career. He believed in the equality of all arts; there was no delineation between applied art, craft and fine art. This exhibition clearly illustrates his commitment to Bauhaus ideals by presenting a diverse selection of his creative lifetime output.

We are pleased to showcase a strong sampling of today’s most vibrant contemporary art, while paying homage to Aspen’s well-earned reputation as an important market for collectors and patrons of the fine arts. Casting a national net, we have assembled 25 respected galleries.

Already a tradition and must-attend event for Aspen’s avid art collecting community, this year we have partnered with institutions across other arts and cultural disciplines, offering ArtAspen as a conduit for visual arts discovery with the goal of inspiring new collectors or first-time buyers. To expand our reach, we have teamed up with Aspen Film, the Aspen Institute, Aspen Music Festival & School, and the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club, our Opening Night beneficiary. This accessible fair is a prime opportunity for both new and experienced art buyers to experience the thrill and satisfaction of placing beauty on the walls of their homes.

ArtAspen is pleased to join forces with the popular Aspen Peak magazine in presenting a rousing Opening Night Preview. Aspen Peak’s ‘Sneak Peak’, + 10th Anniversary Celebration sets the tone for the Fair. Their clever concept to auction celebrity-painted functional ski helmets benefitting the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club adroitly unites three Roaring Forks passions: arts patronage, philanthropy and, well, skiing.

We pay homage to the late, pioneering local artist Herbert Bayer with insightful discussion featuring distinguished panelists, benefiting the Paepcke Gallerry at the Aspen Institute. Our panel discussion on The American West in Contemporary Art presents profound insights from four esteemed museum curators. Join us for a wonderful Saturday session, where we will screen the film Herb & Dorothy: 50 x 50 and meet filmmaker Megumi Sasaki and featured film star, Dorothy Vogel on how she and her late husband Herb judiciously donated an amazing 2,500 works of art across all 50 states. On Sunday, get inspired as heavy weight art collectors, including Houston’s Lester Marks, share their hard-earned advice on art buying for our guests from the Aspen Music Festival and School.

Last but not least, on Friday night, we salute and toast the amazing 50th anniversary of our host building, the Aspen Ice Garden.

ArtAspen’s Opening Night Preview features Aspen Peak’s ‘Sneak Peak’ + 10th Anniversary. The evening provides a ‘Sneak Peak’ for arts patrons to acquire before the fair opens to the public on Friday, August 1. For this memorable celebration, the magazine presents an innovative fundraiser unique to Aspen. Eight functional helmets, donated by OBSE Ski Helmets, will be hand-painted and auctioned at the fair. Proceeds benefit the Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club.

Join local curators and fine art professionals on a guided tour of the show floor. Guides will highlight their favorite booths and works on display, as well as answer any questions collectors and fairgoers may have.

2-3pm: The American West in Contemporary ArtOpen to All Ticket holders | Theater Lounge

Curators discuss how the historic frontier and open space of the American West is considered in the late-modern/contemporary imagination. Taking a broad view of the West as both a literal place and metaphorical space, discussion topics will include historical notions of Manifest Destiny, the importance of photography and cinema, and how artists both in and out of the United States represent “the West” in their work. Panelists include: Julie Sasse from the Tucson Museum of Art, Becca Maksym from the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Erin Dziedzic from the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Mardee Goff from the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art.

5-7pm: Golden Anniversary of the Aspen Ice GardenOpen to All Ticket holders | Show floor

Let’s toast this beloved ice rink at the Golden Anniversary celebration and it’s important role in the city’s history. The 50th anniversary celebration will feature an open wine bar, a birthday cake and expert-led tours of the show floor. Hosted by the Aspen Chamber of Commerce, and presented by the Aspen Daily News.

1-1:30pm: Lost and Found: The Pinajian Discovery Book Signing with author Peter Hastings Falk, Gallery 125 booth

Art historian and author Peter Hastings Falk will tell the story of Lost and Found: The Pinajian Discovery followed by a book-signing. The book describes the life and times of a notable but neglected 20th-century American painter who died in 1999 at the age of 85 and whose abstract landscapes and nudes are being showcased in Aspen for the first time. The Arthur Pinajian book was published in conjunction with a traveling museum exhibition and these lost paintings have only recently been made available to collectors.

The Pinajian story centers around five decades of accumulated artwork were found stacked up in the one-car garage and attic of the Bellport, New York, cottage he shared with his sister. When he died he left instructions for his collection to be discarded in the town dump. At the last moment an artist cousin refused to let the garbage truck haul away the paintings. Instead, Professor William Innes Homer [1929-2012], then dean of American art historians, was asked to examine the life’s work of the unknown artist and was stunned by what he found: a large body of extraordinary abstract landscape and figurative paintings by a highly gifted artist who was completely unknown in his lifetime. Homer urged fellow historian Falk to head the project. Falk was equally stunned and soon a team of art historians was conducting research into the life and art of Arthur Pinajian.

Herbert Bayer, (1900-1985) was a painter, sculptor, photographer, interior designer, and architect who adhered to the ethos of the Bauhaus ideals. Teaming up with visionary Walter Paepcke after moving to Aspen in 1946, Bayer’s architectural work included co-designing the Aspen Institute and restoring the Wheeler Opera House. Panelists include Lissa Ballinger, Aspen Institute, artist Richard Carter, and architect Harry Teague. Moderated by Gwen Chanzit. Benefits the Paepcke Gallery of the Aspen Institute, hosted by Aspen Magazine.

Developed as the follow-up film to Megumi Sasaki’s award-winning documentary HERB & DOROTHY (2008) that moved millions of art-lovers worldwide, HERB & DOROTHY 50X50 captures the last chapter of the Vogel’s extraordinary life and their gift to the nation, a total of 2,500 artworks to museums in all fifty states.

Megumi began her career as journalist for print media before joining NHK, Japan’s sole public broadcaster (equivalent to BBC in UK) in 1992. In 2002, Megumi founded a production company, Fine Line Media, to streamline ongoing commitments to Japanese television while facilitating her new interest in feature documentary projects. HERB & DOROTHY is the first of these projects, a labor of love for which Megumi is both director and producer.In 2013, Megumi completed the highly anticipated follow-up documentary to HERB & DOROTHY titled HERB & DOROTHY 50X50, which focuses on the next (and final) chapter in the lives of legendary art collectors Herb and Dorothy Vogel.

In 2008, legendary art collectors Herb and Dorothy Vogel made an announcement that stunned the art world. Known and loved as a retired postal worker (Herb) and librarian (Dorothy) who built a world-class art collection on their humble salaries, the Vogels launched a national gift project with the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington DC that would constitute one of the largest gifts in the history of American art: to give a total of 2,500 artworks to museums in all fifty states. Though their collection was worth millions of dollars, the couple did not sell a single piece, instead giving fifty works to one museum in every state.
