Jewish Federation is participating in a national Jewish Disability Lobby Day on Parliament Hill on February 21, 2017. Judy Shapiro, our associate executive director, will join representatives from across the country in meeting with MPs to advocate on behalf of Jewish people with disabilities. As JDAIM lights the way, let us all be reminded to be more compassionate, more empathetic, and to value the specialness of those who are different from us. We all have something to learn from one another, and oſten the greatest of learnings come from opening our minds and hearts to others. Because… we are diverse but united. Because…we work together to improve our community each day. Because… together we are stronger. B’Shalom, Adam Silver, Chief Executive Officer Calgary Jewish Federation F riends, We have come to the close of our official United Jewish Appeal fund-raising season (although it’s never too late to donate!) As a community, we owe a debt of gratitude to Larry Katz and Yannai Segal, our 2016 UJA Campaign Co-Chairs, to all of our canvassers, and to our amazing staff team for running a good campaign in a very tough year. is year, we did not reach our goal of $2.75M, but we did come close, and many members in our community made sacrifices to ensure that key programs and services can continue to be provided. We are so grateful to our volunteers for their time, passion, and talent, and extremely grateful to our donors for their generosity. Last week’s parsha, Beshalach, tells the story of the parting of the Red Sea. What emerges is a picture of a people with diversity of opinion, differing abilities and varied levels of faith. Our community is as diverse as that of our ancestors, and that means that we must, and do, work together to create unity and opportunity. As such, I am so excited to highlight JDAIM 2017 – Jewish Disabilities Awareness and Inclusion Month, which spans the month of February. Integrating individuals with challenges and special abilities and their families into the community does not mean offering segregated or parallel programming – it means structuring programming to be as inclusive as possible. Calgary Jewish Federation and many other community organizations have been making strides to be ever more inclusive, and JDAIM is a set time in the year to educate stakeholders, reengage those with special needs, and to demonstrate leadership in the area of inclusion which is intended to last the entire year. In Judaism, we learn “Do not curse a person who is deaf and do not place a stumbling block in front of a person who is blind.” (Leviticus 19:14) We also learn “Do not look at the container, but what is in it.” (Pirke Avot 4:27) While we do have a much longer path to travel to be fully inclusive, I am very proud of the strides we have made in the last few years, and I believe we are headed in the right direction. A highlight of JDAIM programming is a Federation- sponsored evening with Arthur Fleischmann, father of Carly Fleischmann, whose story is exceptionally interesting and inspiring. Details of this event and all the other JDAIM events in the community can be found on these Pomegranate pages – I encourage you to visit our community’s organizations to experience the breadth of programming being offered. Sara’s Voicesotto voceNearly 200 people attended Sara’s Voice sotto voce, a captivating, moving and meaningful narrated concert. The production tells the story of violin virtuoso Sara Rashina, whose life was cut short in the Shoah. Thank you to creator and narrator Deborah Shelkan Remis, Diana Cohen on violin and Roman Rabinovich on piano for sharing their talents and bringing to life this tragic story. Thank you as well to our partner in this event, Temple B’nai Tikvah, and our community sponsors: Rochelle Rabinovitz, Bettina and Leib Zeisler, Elaine and Stuart Myron, David Lyons, Eva and Gord Hoffman, and Dr. Lenny and Hilda Smith. This event was one of many ways that Federation’s Holocaust and Human Rights Education department strives to share stories and preserve the memories of the Shoah.

There is no charge but registration is required. Space is limited.
