Vietnamese art reflects a mixture of influences: Vietnamese traditional art, influences from China and influence from the French during the colonial period. Just over a decade ago Vietnam opened up to the world. The international art market started to see the talents of Vietnamese artists and the variety of styles in Vietnamese paintings. Demand for Vietnamese art is increasing rapidly, especially in France and other countries in Europe.

Lacquered items have been found in ancient tombs in Vietnam dating as far back as the third and fourth centuries B.C. Over the centuries, Vietnamese master craftsmen and artists have mastered techniques using lacquer for purpose of decoration and preservation.

Lacquer paintings now can compete successfully with silk and oil paintings and have the unique character of this style of painting.

Artistic Characteristics:Lacquer traditionally comes in three colors - brown,

black and vermilion. By the 1930s, artists started to use a new technique known as chiseling which gives a richer mix of colors and an added sense of size and distance..

The painting is done on wood. It is covered with a piece of cloth glued to it using the sap of the lacquer tree and then coated with a layer of the sap mixed with earth. The board is then sand papered and recoated with a layer of hot sap. After polishing, this gives a smooth black surface with a brilliant luster.

The painter uses hot lacquer to draw the outline of a picture and the colors are applied one by one, layer upon layer. Each coat dries slowly.

The finishing touches consist of polishing and washing the pictures. This process may seem like brutal treatment for a work of art, but it is done with great care. This process leaves a brilliant surface on a painting.

Through years of experience and experimentation, the artists use the addition of other substances such as plant material ash, crushed eggshells, gold and silver to embelish their works. These additional substances help the modern artists to express themselves fully and to further add creativity and individuality of style to their art works

Dó paper is famous for being used in Vietnamese traditional paintings including Hang Trong painting. This kind of paper made from the bark of the Rhamnoneuron balansae is very soft but durable. The paintings on Dó paper therefore convey somewhat of the characteristic of the Vietnamese who are soft on the outside but very strong in difficulty.

In Vietnam, painting on silk is popular. Vietnamese artists found these technique to be a unique way to create mystique and a charming sense of mystique in their paintings. By using contemporary colors, Vietnamese silk painting has won the hearts of many art lovers.

After a long period of development of techniques and styles, silk painting reached its highest period of success during the years 1925-1945 . The Vietnamese style of silk painting emphasized softness, elegance and a flexibility of style. These qualities of silk painting were different compared to, at the time, to the dominant French and European oil painting. In 1946, Vietnamese silk painting was accepted and introduced to the world when Vietnamese silk paintings won two prizes at the official Salon organized in France. Silk painting is now popular in Vietnam and has its own unique character and transparency of colors that are different from those of ancient China and Japan.

You can safely use this term for anything in between realism and abstraction including calligraphy where it can be argued that written language is a nonrepresentational means of communication as is any art based on it.

• SEMI-ABSTRACT ART

• SURREALISMThese works often look like snap-shots from a dream using symbolism and distorted reality.

• INDIGENOUS ARTMost indigenous art relies on a well developed system of symbols and techniques imbued with their own meaning. Even representations of everyday objects tend to have a culturally stylistic overlay, removing them from realism, and establishing them firmly as semi-abstraction.

• SYMBOLISMThese works use cultural meanings and messages associated with various symbols to convey a deeper meaning, and as such, go beyond straight representation, and may often look a little surreal.

• STREET ARTSimilar to indigenous art, street art also has a well developed system of symbols and culturally significant techniques. The use of cartoons, stylized figures, and designs based on letter forms are all clear, but recognizable, abstractions.

• ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

These are works which may have no relationship to reality at all, or present a visually codified version of individual reality that’s not dependent on recognizable objects.

• ABSTRACT ART

These works use color and shape to describe a personal emotional state rather than relying on the messages already inherent in recognizable objects.
