This Art Studio project will combine the imagery of poetry with some simple watercolor technique to create a memorable piece of art. Begin by reading this poem: Fog By Carl Sandburg The fog comes on little cat feet. It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on. Using just 6 lines and simple language Carl Sandburg is able to paint a pic- ture with words. The imagery he uses captivates our imagination as we think of the way fog tends to roll in, creeping and quiet. Read the poem again and allow time for the group to discuss what they imagine in this scene. 1 ThePurplePrimer.com Art Studio Fog Poem and Watercolor

This Art Studio project will combine the imagery of

poetry with some simple watercolor technique to

create a memorable piece of art.

Begin by reading this poem:

Fog

By Carl Sandburg

The fog comes

on little cat feet.

It sits looking

over harbor and city

on silent haunches

and then moves on.

Using just 6 lines and simple language Carl Sandburg is able to paint a pic-

ture with words.

The imagery he uses captivates our imagination as we think of the way fog

tends to roll in, creeping and quiet.

Read the poem again and allow time for the group to discuss what they

imagine in this scene.

Art Studio

Supplies:

Watercolor Paints

Water cups

Paintbrushes

Watercolor Paper

Pencils

Color Pencils

Palette or paper plate

Everyone will see and hear something different in this poem. Encourage art-

ists to take time and sketch their idea. Maybe they see a cat or a city shroud-

ed in fog.

Using color pencils to add detail to your drawing, before adding watercolor,

will give the artwork depth.

Use a palette or paper plate to mix a light gray by combining some dark blue

and brown watercolor paint mixed with water.

Be sure to test the color on the side of your paper before adding it to your

drawing. Add more water if it is too dark.

Allow this light gray paint to dry. Next mix a darker shade of gray, adding a

little less water, varying shades of gray will add contrast to your painting. Al-

low this layer to dry.

Lastly, apply a small amount of black watercolor paint mixed with a little

water. Add this dark color, just here and there, to add even more contrast.

Encourage participants to apply these layers of fog to their drawing as they

“see” the image in the poem. There is no right or wrong way to create this

scene.

This project presents a great opportunity for individual creative expression.
