ART IN TANZANIA INTERNHIP/WORK STUDY
PROGRAMS About the Organization Art in Tanzania is a self-‐sustainable Tanzanian non-‐profit NGO having hundreds of international interns and volunteers annually in Tanzania in multi professional programs. • Art in Tanzania is a NGO established 2001, registered as Tanzanian NGO on 2007 and working in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and in Moshi (Kilimanjaro). • We have around 70 people on our staff, including 5-‐10 expatriates. We have 30-‐150 international volunteers and interns in Tanzania all year around. Participants live in our compounds while mainly focusing on working in the surrounding schools and areas. • Our focuses include education, medical health, HIV/AIDS, sports, art, movie production, media, tourism as well as our Partnered Children Agenda with UNICEF within the Social Sector. Our community-‐based programs are geared to empowering local communities and individuals. Our interns experience being immersed in the daily life of Tanzania while also having the opportunity to witness the growth of the fastest growing economy in Africa. Early Childhood & Children Agenda & Rights Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania is partnered with UNICEF, Save the Children, and other NGOs as a part of The Children’s Agenda Tanzania. Art in Tanzania focuses on Early Childhood and Children’s Rights issues in Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and Moshi (Kilimanjaro) in Tanzania.
Details Children’s Agenda Tanzania program is partnered by 40 Tanzanian and International NGOs including UNICEF, Save the children and many others. The main focus is in children rights for education, medication, sanitation and other basic facts and it is also covering mothers and families. Art in Tanzania tailors its efforts as the lead of the media team to give visibility for the program and the results.
Art in Tanzania focuses on strengthening the Early Childhood Agenda through work in Nursery Schools, Orphanages, helping homeless children and other entities. We are looking for to hire multi-‐faceted students and interns to support our work. We tailor the posts according the participants professional focus and interests and skills. Interns are working in a team of international and Tanzanian multi professional intern teams. We encourage innovation in the program approach. We have two tutors for the program. Mr. Michael Sungu. A graduate from University of Dar es Salaam and team lead for the UNICEF issues. Mrs. Sonja Lauren, Finnish social worker who interned in Tanzania for social sector in 2011 and came back to work with us. The working hours are 6-‐8 hours per day from Monday to Friday. Music & Dance Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania is developing young musicians and dancers in Tanzania. We focus on traditional African music with hectic drum rhythms and dancing. We are looking for
western artists to join the program for cultural exchange. We are also developing school music teaching. Details The work picture includes working in our Mzuka Records music studio, to join band rehearsals, to develop the shows, and to teach music. At the moment, Tanzanian schools have
no music instruction due to lack of resources and funding. Art in Tanzania trains the artists to be music teachers and introduces music teaching as extra curriculum in schools. New evolving program is Music Therapy as part of Art Therapy approach. Interns are working in a team of international and Tanzanian multi professional intern teams. We encourage innovation in the program approach. The working hours are 6-‐8 hours per day from Monday to Friday. This is ongoing program and we can adjust the starting dates. Tutoring The training tutor for the Students is Mrs. Yuster Nyakachara, a long time top artist in Tanzania. The training focuses on the strengths of the Tanzanian art team including an emphasis on African dance and drum fusion. Students have top Tanzanian artists guiding the dancing and instrumental students. Working at the Mzuka Records recording studio focusing on to support the youth talents. At the moment, Tanzanian schools have no music instruction due to lack of resources and funding. Art in Tanzania trains the artists to be music teachers and introduces music teaching as extra curriculum in schools. The University of Dar es Salaam partners with the Tanzanian interns. Upon completion of the program the interns will learn how the bands and music industry operate with limited resources in a developing country.

Marketing & Management Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania is self-‐sustainable non-‐profit charity NGO. We earn our funds from safari-‐tour operations, movie and music production as well as Fair Trade-‐ type operations. The daily management of the NGO operations are also part of this posting. Details Our community-‐based programs are to empower the local communities and individual people. Creative Media Program Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania’s Media Department focuses on using digital media outlets such as social media, web pages, and blogs. We use the media to give visibility to our programs, marketing, Children Agenda (partnered with UNICEF), music, arts, and the other areas we are focused upon. Our community-‐based programs are to empower the local communities and individual people. Our interns experience being immersed in the daily life of Tanzania while also having the opportunity to witness the growth of the fastest growing economy in Africa. Art in Tanzania is established within Tanzania’s art sector. For over 15 years, and with over 18 movies produced, Art in Tanzania has supported local artists and art programs develop. Areas of focus include African Music and Dance, Film, and Design. We offer an immersion experience for students in both developing culture and art. Our flagship music group Sanaa Sana has traveled overseas to perform on several occasions. We are looking for traditionally-‐trained artists to help enhance our programs by collaborating, mentoring, and teaching our self-‐taught art incubator. We document and raise awareness for our efforts by incorporating arts and media. We place strong emphasis on providing visibility to promoting human rights, the Children’s Agenda, and general NGO operations and self-‐sustaining fundraising. At Art in Tanzania, we innovate our art and media styles in dynamic development. From volunteering and safari tour applications, we use our media and art in a variety of marketing initiatives. Environmental Sustainability Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania is introducing and implementing environmentally friendly solutions for the Tanzanian communities as use of dry toilets, composting and household water reuse. We also focus on eco construction and planting bamboo as eco-‐friendly solution for construction material. We also emphasize the sustainable tourism operations. Details Tanzanian communities are lacking economical strength to implement environmentally friendly solutions in their households. Presently less than 50% of the households have a toilet. Interns are developing sustainable and affordable solutions including a dry toilet for households and schools. Other green work includes developing composts, sustainable sources for cooking heat, development of tree and bamboo nurseries as well as neighborhood education and advocacy. A local source of funding and sustainability for Art in Tanzania are wildlife safari and other tourism operations. We are developing a NGO business model to streamline revenue back into communities. We are developing more opportunities to expand our field of international volunteering
and internships to empower our work in Tanzania. Though we believe that most of the value in our internships come from the hands on experience and opportunities, we offer both paid and non-‐paid internships. As we are an NGO, our paid internships are in accordance with the Tanzanian minimum salary. However, to offset the low minimum wage of a developing country, we use what resources we have to offer

Medical & Nursing Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania helps the small community clinics in the villages as well as larger hospitals. Tanzania heath care is missing professional medical staff. You can assist to develop the healthcare but you also get great experience how to work in a developing country with limited medical facilities. Details Art in Tanzania medical support team works in Moshi, Dar es Salaam and in Zanzibar. We focus on Dar es Salaam Madale village medical support program as we can combine small village clinics with larger hospital in near vicinity. Part of the duties is planning work to develop the program. For example we look for to open small neonatal clinic to serve the young mothers in the Madale village. Medical program includes also HIV/AIDS counseling advocacy and events & testing. The program needs different types of medical personnel but most of all nurses and doctors. It is practical work in the clinics but also training of the Tanzanian medical staff and changing views. This is ongoing program and we can adjust the starting dates. Community Sports Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania is developing children and youth sport programs in village level in Tanzania. The main focus is in youth football and girls sport activities. This program is also part of Children’s Agenda approach where our coalition includes UNICEF and other large organizations.
Details Tanzanian communities are lacking capacities to run children and youth sport programs. Commonly children make their football grounds themselves and play with make shift balls. Organized Coaching is rare. Currently, Art in Tanzania is focused on developing youth football. We develop structures for village tournaments and
select talented children for more advanced training. Tanzanian sport teachers are voluntarily assisting the program and our task is to develop a proper football education system.
We are also developing girls teams and diversified coaching of other team sports. Interns help to structure program, to train our Tanzanian coaches, advise about sports in schools, perform coaching activities with the local coaches, and organize tournaments. Interns are working in a team of international and Tanzanian multi professional intern teams. We encourage innovation in the program approach. Education Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania focuses on to help educational tasks in nursery, primary and secondary schools in Tanzania as well as adult vocational training. The schools we help are mostly poor village schools. Interns help to develop the primary education and also conduct advocacy work. Details Art in Tanzania Educational program is part of our Children’s Agenda approach implemented by a coalition including UNICEF, Save the Children and others. We work in village nursery, primary and secondary schools but we also run adult vocational training where the focal point are the women. Program also includes classes for children living with disabilities. Participants are specifically needed to cover subjects where the schools are weak. Areas of development include English, arts and music, mathematics and sports teaching. Interns also advocate in subjects as HIV/AIDS, health and hygiene. We also highlight teacher-‐training activities. Tools in the classrooms are scarce also the classrooms size can be 40 students up. Energetic and innovative teachers are needed. Sustainable Tourism Tanzania
Summary Art in Tanzania is running safari and tour operations in Tanzania as NGO fund raising. In this program you can participate in guiding, tour development and marketing posts. Details Art in Tanzania tour operations include National Parks and game reserves as Serengeti, N’gorongoro, Lake Manyara, Selous, Mikumi and Ruaha. We also take tourists to Mt Kilimanjaro as well as to Zanzibar Islands. Participants assist in guiding tasks, to develop daily programs, in customer service and in marketing. Photographing – Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania uses photographs in daily operations to give visibility for community
issues in Children Agenda and other programs. Photographing Tanzania includes wildlife as well as exposures that promotes social development and human rights. Women Initiatives Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania supports and develops village women initiatives. The main inputs are vocational training in English, IT, entrepreneurship, women rights and related subjects. We are also developing medical services and health information sessions. Details Tanzania has a large group of young mothers in the villages that have little or no education and are without financial support. Additionally, areas are often heavily populated, which complicates the strive of livelihood and provision for these Mother’s children. Most of these women lack the opportunity to reach education or means to fund and develop small businesses. Additionally, many of these women are under-‐empowered or unaware of their basic human rights, thus making young mothers vulnerable for abuse. Art in Tanzania is focusing to deliver skills for women to start their own small businesses and to create markets to their products. At the same time we educate women rights and related subjects so that women will learn their rights in problem situations. We focus to be both innovative and effective. We are looking for to hire multi professional students and interns to support our work. We tailor the posts according the participants focus and interests and skills. We look for to be innovative. Interns bring their ideas that we look for to implement to strengthen the fieldwork. We encourage innovation and a self-‐led creativity in the professional program approach. Work with women is under-‐funded but Art in Tanzania has multi professional interns and volunteers. We use teamwork to create opportunities. One can teach how to start horticulture and one can look for the markets. The base effort is to increase the small business skills through educational approach and to increase awareness. Art Therapy Program Summary Art therapy is a form of therapy that can be used to improve mental health and well being of anyone. As with most therapies, art therapy is generally used as a treatment for something – as a way to improve one’s emotional state or mental well being, but expressive art therapy can be used to relieve stress or tension, or it can be used as a mode of self-‐discovery and waking up creativity. Details This internship program is directed to participants that already have studied the field 2-‐3 years and need practical experience working with a group. Participants can also be practitioners of Art Therapy who would like to volunteer their time to help a group or individuals in Dar es Salaam, Moshi or Zanzibar. Internship can be tailored accordingly to different groups; children in poverty, children and youth with disabilities, orphaned children, unemployed youth, women in poverty, people with HIV, people recovering from trauma, people recovering from addiction, elderly, artists, teachers etc. Participants will be guided and supervised by professional Expressive Arts Therapist and teacher Kristiina McKenzie. This Internship will require partly working independently and learning Kiswahili is beneficial for the participants as many groups do not speak English well if at all. Each participant will start in Dar es Salaam, but can move to another location after 2 weeks. Work hours are 6-‐8 hours Monday-‐Friday. Art therapy Internships are available for minimum 3 months period starting between January and April 2016.

Volunteer Tanzania Summary Art in Tanzania volunteer placements are located at Madale village in Dar es Salaam, at Moshi in Kilimanjaro and in Fuoni village and Stone town in Zanzibar. Volunteering is a learning experience for every field. Description Art in Tanzania programs include non-‐paid volunteering posts along paid internships. Volunteers commonly assist our charity in sectors as education, social programs including Children's Agenda supported by UNICEF, medical and health, HIV/AIDS, construction, sustainability, arts and music and dance, media, film making, sports and more.
